The words come easier and easier the more I practice. It makes learning a new language much more fun. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to quickly memorize characters. ### 5/5 — Incredible *2016-06-14, version 2.9.9* I tried to read Learning the Traditional Hanzi, but found the fictional meanings and stories about the primitives bizarre and culturally alien. I simply cannot be convinced that a Chinese primitive means “baseball”! I found and enjoyed reading Chineasy, but it covered so few characters, and it was a muddle of both traditional and simplified hanzi. This app is a godsend. It breaks each character down into its primitive components and presents them in order of complexity, using the primitives and character components you have already learned. Where possible, it gives the actual meaning and context of primitives. It also gives their Mandarin pronunciation in pinyin, which is wonderful. I am using the TOCFL, and my only note is that it would be nice to additionally get the pronunciation in zhuyin, since that is the alphabet in use in Taiwan. ### 4/5 — Really nice app *2016-04-28, version 2.9.9* Really nicely done and it works for me, annoyingly the sync function does not work so well... ### 4/5 — Nice app!! *2016-02-27, version 2.9.9* I really like this app. I have been trying to learn Chinese for almost a year now and I wouldn't have gotten where I am now without this app. I do have a suggestion though. When using flash cards can you make it so that the flash card takes up the whole screen. Have the screen divided between the flashcard and 'what is a flashcard'/ other meanings and other locations is kind of distracting (maybe add a 'more information' button). Also paying $9 to unlock the WHOLE app when I'm not going to use it all is a waste of money(main reason why I haven't bought it yet). I only plan on using the games and the HSK levels. I won't need the other sets. La version gratuite permet de debuter et tester l'appli. Le fait de payer débloque des fonctionnalités supplémentaires et l'accès à tous les niveaux d'etude (en japonais et chinois et selon les principaux référentiels utilises). L'appli est agreable à utiliser et fonctionne parfaitement. Les jeux sont suffisamment differents pour qu'on ne se lasse pas. Cela fait un mois que j'utilise cette appli et je n'ai jamais progressé aussi vite. I've probably tried most of the other Japanese Kanji learning Apps, and this is the best in my opinion. I'm using this in conjunction with the book Kanji ABC. Definitely learn kanji by radicals, primitives and graphemes. You can add your own stories for each character, and some have entries already. I tried using the Heisig book, but it wasn't working for me. There are a few things can be improved, but overall it's great. What others had already mentioned, it needs Chinese and Japanese separation. Primitive is not needed for me, please have an option to turn it "off". Thanks! Another problem, or maybe it's correct? Is characters like 几, which means "table", but it's listed at "how many". Also 何 (what) is listed as "which". Is this correct? Seems like quite a few is listed wrong? Or am I missing something here? It works extremely well and I have already memorized at least 58 kanji! And on top of that I remember them! The teaching technique is ingenious. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Dissapointed *2013-08-29, version 1.50* This app was great when I first downloaded it but after the update it became terrible. I can't move on. It makes me repeat the same two kanji over and over even though it says its not supposed to be shown to me for a couple of hours. I wouldn't have taken the update if I knew it would corrupt the whole $7.99 app. Please fix soon. The glitches make it unusable. ### 2/5 — Why *2015-03-04, version 2.8* A heads-up— the in-app purchase for the full game is $8. This would actually be a great app if it wasn't so buggy. This isn't the best kanji app but it could be. ### 3/5 — Turning off primitives would be nice *2015-03-08, version 2.8* If I could, the app might be worth buying. ### 3/5 — I don't understand. *2014-06-25, version 2.4* how to use it. ### 3/5 — Lost *2014-06-17, version 2.4* I have no idea how to use the app but seems useful ### 3/5 — <3 *2014-05-10, version 2.02* Pros: •algorithms that suit the user's specifics needs and priorities •decent interface •easily navigable •most commonly used kanji Cons: •the anime girl on the cover (I have nothing against anime and I actually enjoy it occasionally but in this case it seems like the app is targeting 14-year-old weeaboos, and that's kind of embarrassing) •little to no focus on the PRONUNCIATIONS of the symbols, which is essential in understanding them (past just visual recognition) •no explanation of why symbols may have several different pronunciations (onyomi, kunyomi) •not everyone is willing to pay eight dollars for the full app (however, in context, eight dollars is VERY inexpensive compared to other means of learning kanji) Based on these aspects (and a few more I didn't have time to list), it almost seems like the cons outweigh the pros. However, since I do enjoy the app in its intent, I still gave it three stars. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Incredible! *2021-03-07, version 3.2.9* This app is amazing! I have used it and it’s counter parts to teach myself Japanese. If I was consistent in my learning I would know so much. But this app gives so much for the price and even just the free part of the app can get you a really good understanding of Kanji. It points you in the direction of what to learn and can solidify the basics before moving on. Plus there is a cute anime girl with a different outfit everyday to help the learning process feel less lonely. There was a time when the app had some maintenance issues and I emailed the customer support and within the next day had a response and the issue resolved. Truly recommended this app and have to multiple of my friends who wanted a good way to start learning. This app is great from Kanji and the developer has another app just as good for vocab! It’s incredible! ### 5/5 — The BEST kanji app. *2020-06-22, version 3.0.2* I’m learning Japanese on duolingo but I was having trouble remembering the more complex kanji so I looked for an app to help. I’ve tried a few now but THIS IS THE ONE. Things that I love about this app: *How extremely customisable it is. *You can add your own notes such as writing your own little mnemonic stories. (Which I highly recommend doing) *It teaches you primitives as well as kanji. *There are so many varieties of games. *You can select kanji from higher JOYO brackets to add to those you are currently learning - very helpful when you are still at beginner level but duolingo is serving you kanji that isn’t taught until secondary school. ### 5/5 — Love this app but... *2019-07-30, version 3.0.2* This app is excellent for working through Kanji. Here is one small feedback point for the authors - when playing the game which splits the kanji into components (or 'radicals') you have occasionally given two different components the same name - E.g. 行 is 'going' but the left side of 行 is also listed in English as 'going' which means it is impossible to know which component you will get when you press 'going' in the game. You could avoid this problem by renaming one of the symbols as 'Go' or 'Moving' ### 5/5 — Great learning tool!! *2017-06-24, version 3.0.2* This app has allowed me to learn at lightning speed!!
