## What is Scrim?

Check clipped highlights and horizon tilt before taking a photo. Scrim turns the live camera preview and motion measurements into a clear framing guide, including when a reading is uncertain.

FRAME: See a framing recommendation, horizon angle and clipped-highlight proportion.
LIGHT: Explore the brightness range visible in the preview and its measurement limits.
VERTICALS: Estimate perspective convergence after selecting your lens’s half vertical field of view.
DELIVERY: Compare HDR headroom using a gain ratio you enter and example display assumptions. This is a manual planning tool; it does not import or analyse photo files.

The paired Apple Watch displays the iPhone’s current framing decision. Keep Scrim open on the iPhone for live measurements.

Scrim is a guide, not a camera or a calibrated lux meter. It does not take photos or determine exposure settings. Results depend on the camera preview and device motion.

No account or subscription. One purchase. Camera frames are processed on your device and never saved. Only numeric readings are sent to your paired Apple Watch.

Two screens in Scrim used to describe tools that were not there yet. They are there now.

Converging verticals estimates how much your verticals converge once you enter your lens's half vertical field of view. Delivery gap compares HDR headroom from a gain ratio you type in against example display assumptions. Both are planning tools you feed by hand — neither reads your photos.

They open together with one purchase. No subscription, no account, no sign-in. The meter stays free and unchanged.

The privacy note is also more exact: Scrim still opens no network connection of its own, and the only traffic is Apple's purchase check, which we never see.

### 1.2 — 2026-09-08

Clear camera permission guidance and a working link to Settings. More reliable recovery after returning to the app. Outdated readings are hidden when live data stops, including on Apple Watch. Light measurements no longer show a false zero when motion data is unavailable.

### 1.1 — 2026-09-03

The horizon band was too narrow. A derivation error (a stray √2) made it cover about 84% of true readings; it is now a measured 95% band. Under hand shake the band widens with the jitter Scrim actually measures, instead of pretending the hand is still.

When Scrim can't tell, it now tells you what it still knows and what brings the reading back — "lower the phone by about 12°", "hold still", "rotate +0.4° to level" — and keeps the last measurement on screen, faded, for half a second. Clipping and range stay readable while the horizon is undefined. Bigger touch targets in Verticals.
