### 4/5 — Random

*2022-08-21, version 2.10*

Love the random function, never know where that is going to take me. Has a decent size keyboard, I can play melodies on it.

### 4/5 — Confirming distortion on every patch

*2020-11-29, version 2.10*

iPad Pro 2020 11inch model. I noticed another review here saying the same thing. It appears to be an issue specific to the 11in. Pro. Otherwise looks to be a cool synth, would really like to play with it. Hopefully there’s an updated.

### 4/5 — Great synth!

*2020-03-06, version 2.10*

Tough sounding, in a good way. The bend feature can create complex and unique modulations very easily. Would like to see more presets added though.

### 5/5 — Awesome!

*2017-11-23, version 2.7*

Update: Nice to see the recent updates! This is one of my favorite synths. Host it in AUM and drive it with the Bram Bos sequencer. Very cool!

Just hitting random and tweaking will give you some great sounds you've never heard before. Just needs a way to choose the MIDI channel it responds on. Otherwise, I love it!

### 5/5 — Good Synth

*2017-11-23, version 2.7*

No idea why this is free, I would have paid if I knew about it. Just want to say thanks to the developer. Found through appshopper since it was marked down.

### 4/5 — Was a fantastic synth. What happened?

*2016-12-27, version 2.4*

My poor little Scythe synth stopped sound output. If I connect it with AUM I can get it to work ONCE. If I switch apps, the sound dies permanently.

Please fix? This synth is great for drones!

### 5/5 — Cool synth

*2016-03-10, version 2.2*

The bending feature is what makes this synth stand out and you can also midi bend other iOS synths with this.

### 4/5 — cuts thru your mix!

*2015-03-25, version 2.2*

no pun intended... any synth app with a randomizer gets alot of love from me . the sounds i have gotten so far are unique and what i would call harsh and spikey( not in a bad way, i like non boring, non run of the mill sounds) .audiocopy works fine. my only request which might sound weird is a randomize option for effects section...

### 5/5 — Wish Scythe worked on iOS 7!

*2015-02-28, version 2.0*

Please make it backward compatible!

### 5/5 — Grear update!

*2015-02-26, version 2.0*

This is a fantastic update and brings a new depth to an already fantastic synth. Up there with the best now.

### 4/5 — Thanks for the update

*2013-11-07, version 1.10*

This tells me the developers are still into this app, supporting it with updates...it would be a shame if this synth would be forgotten. Once again, thank you!

### 5/5 — Bend it Bent it

*2013-10-17, version 1.9*

Original take on synthesis very nice synth with great automation.

### 5/5 — My Go-To Synth

*2013-03-25, version 1.9*

I have tried almost all of the iOS synths, and I find myself coming back to GrainBender for it's ability to construct unique sounds. It does not have a lot of presets, but it has outstanding controls that allow the user to create whatever sound is needed for the situation at hand. It is definitely my "Go-to" synth.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — maybe it’s code rut

*2022-10-30, version 2.10*

it crackles on my iPad pro… maybe because it was not updated? unusable.

### 1/5 — A stone

*2017-08-04, version 2.5*

What is going on with these app guys that just let their stuff go? Christo

### 1/5 — Not exiting.

*2012-08-19, version 1.8*

The only thing the app has going for it is the ability to record knob movements. This can be done with many other apps and coreMIDI. The sounds. Are not too great. It is grainy sounding and not inspiring.
Not worth the money.

### 2/5 — More like a Tinkertoy. No support page.

*2013-03-21, version 1.9*

Most of the sounds are toyish sounding. You have to work pretty hard to make then musical. The biggest problem so far is saving my presets. They just don't save half the time. There is no developer page, or help, or support. When my preset does show up in the preset list it sounds nothing like the sound is was working on. 2 stars is being generous.

### 3/5 — Abandoned Synth

*2022-11-07, version 2.10*

No updates in four years. No AUv3

### 3/5 — Unintended distortion, glitched artifacts etc

*2021-03-03, version 2.10*

I saw another review talking about this. I’m using a 2020 iPad Pro 13in and there is a nasty, glitchy distortion on every patch. The engine needs to be updated. Hopefully you guys can get on that soon because I can tell beneath all of that horrid noise there’s some really rich, textural sounds with this synth.

### 3/5 — Bad digital distortion on iPad Pro

*2020-08-15, version 2.10*

Hello,

Running Scythe on iPad Pro 11 inch, iOS 13. There is a noticeable digital distortion on all patches. Almost sounds like when a DAW is running audio at the incorrect sample rate.
Ran an older iPad Air 2 running iOS 13.5.1 and it was fine, so this appears to be a hardware specific issue.

### 3/5 — Interesting sounds; Keyboard Bug

*2017-11-28, version 2.8*

I just started testing this synth, and i liked the very first preset... and then found a weird delay when touching the lower portion of the on-screen keyboard keys. What's this all about? Very awkward. I also managed to trigger keyboard sizing while playing with multiple fingers, despite the keyboard lock being on. Couldn't reproduce immediately after it happened.

Seems a neat synth for harsh noises and synth FX stabs. The Random button is something that all synths should have, but don't. In this case, Scythe has it, but it's too extreme. The randomization range should be controllable. As is, the Random button makes lots of presets of crazy noise, but nothing musical.

### 3/5 — Looks interesting

*2012-01-08, version 1.5*

Just bought it. Don't know where"Grain Bender" comes from since this isn't a grain synthesis app. I'm surprised that the preset section does not have an "Are you sure" type challenge as it is VERY easy to accidentally delete presets. Needs key/note hold otherwise it doesn't do a lot of good allowing multiple simultaneous control adjustments if you have to release the note to do that. More to follow. Also, I found that you can not give user created presets a user defined name. Like i have three presets called "User: Pad Stringy" that have completely different sounds. Oh Really!?

### 3/5 — Nice

*2011-07-26, version 1.0*

Great little synth, very imaginative. I love the randomising features and the fx, but how do you name your own presets or rename presets and midi would be great too.

### 5/5 — Update

*2026-04-17, version 2.16*

Doesn’t load AUM after latest update—won’t work for me in AUM since update—loads then crashes gives directions to “reload” etc tried opening standalone (works fine) but makes no difference in AUM—worked fine before this latest update—

Update fixed and auv3—anything with randomisation gotta be a winner—thanks!

### 5/5 — An absolute legendary Icon

*2024-04-30, version 2.14*

Definitely one of the very top 5 synths in the AppStore

Respect!
Respect!

### 5/5 — Awesome! Another update!

*2024-03-08*

Nice to see an update in 2024. This is one of the best iOS synths IMHO!

### 5/5 — The buzz about the noise about the GET THIS!

*2023-10-28, version 2.10*

This app is the most totally anarchic fun you can have without it being illegal! This app will make buzzes, squawks, blasts, and just about any synthesizer noises you could possibly want.

I am quite new to making synth patches from scratch, so I have a whole lot of learning to do yet, but since all of the controls are at your disposals, you can learn along the way what each control does. For those of you just starting out like I am, I recommend starting with the presets (included with the app), then tweak away. The other option is to use the “random” button, to get totally surprised at what sound comes out!

You can also save your new sounds easily in the user bank.

I have other virtual keyboards for more “musical” sounds. So for that extra punch, plus the learning experience, this is the app for you.

GET. THIS. APP! You won’t regret it!

### 5/5 — KING OF AMAZING

*2020-10-09, version 2.10*

Just a really good synth. Easy to use. Intuitive interface. Beautiful sounds.

### 5/5 — REALLY NICE!!!!

*2020-08-27, version 2.10*

This is really straightforward!

### 5/5 — Sleeper Hit

*2020-05-27, version 2.10*

Someone else mentioned this was a sleeper. It sure is.

So much of a sleeper that another dev named their app “Scythe Synth” a couple of years ago. I’m going to guess they did that without knowing there was already an app in the App Store called “Scythe” (that also happens to be a synth!)

Shouldn’t that be against the rules though? I own the other one and it’s cool too, just don’t dig having two apps with the same name that are both instruments - ya know? But I digress.

While researching the release dates of both apps mentioned above, I saw that this thing has been out for 8 years?! That is simply astounding. This app has excellent sounds and some of the features like being able to modulate/record are unique still to this day.

My biggest question is - why have the devs not made another synth since this came out? We’d love another offering from you guys. I’m sure you have a market!

Great job!

### 5/5 — Awesome synth

*2018-05-29, version 2.9*

Just give it a try. The sounds you can get out of this app are amazing, and for this price... come on give yourself a treat.

### 5/5 — This is a sleeper hit!

*2018-05-20, version 2.9*

Not sure why this synth seems to miss out on reviews and blogs... The bend modulation record function alone is worth the price of admission. Very novel way to mod and easier to set up than LFO’s or mod matrix’s.

Would love to see more developed on it... maybe IAP to allow bend modulation to loop or to allow bend to be temp synced to Link?

For free, this is a no brainer

### 5/5 — Amazing sounds!

*2017-11-29, version 2.8*

Just pressed a few keys using a couple of the samples available—great synth effects and sounds! Look forward to using it more and incorporating it with other apps!
