Unfortunately a lot of fishes are behind a paywall which I can understand but still a little annoying. There’s around 1000 total animals in the book so far, so the more added I think the better it’ll get. **Developer response:** Thank you very much for your review. In the future, I plan to make information about all creatures available for free. For now, consider a subscription as a donation rather than a payment to help cover development and marketing costs. And yes, more features and creatures will be added soon. I can see from reviews it is a newer app which is exciting! Maybe instead of making species available for premium membership, maybe different features that are added instead?? or maybe have a lifetime/buyout membership type of deal if possible!! Lifetime onetime payment will be added a bit later. In the future Seabook will have no locked creatures at all, so all content will be absolutely free for individuals. Please, treat current subscription as donation, rather than payment (I need it now to cover development and marketing expenses). Next features I’m going to add this year are: personal creatures collections, logbook with dive-computers synchronization, and creatures identification by photo. And the search is sometimes not very accurate if you select for example white not all fishes that include the color will be shown. ### 4/5 — Great app, could be perfect *2023-05-30, version 1.1.1* This app is everything I wanted as an identification tool following a dive. However, the subscription option doesn’t suit an app like this. This is not a “free” app **Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback. Seabook includes a lot for free: the full dive logbook, collections, and about 50% of species. Photo ID is paid because it has a real ongoing cost for me to provide. If you need access for study or research and can’t afford it, feel free to contact me. ### 1/5 — scam *2025-08-11* no lifetime free **Developer response:** You are the only one who was not able to get it 🤦 Next time follow the rules ### 1/5 — Can’t ID spotfin croaker *2025-06-22* It IDs a picture of a sporfin croaker caught in Southern California as a “red drum” found in the Atlantic. No good for me. ### 1/5 — Need to pay to even see names of most species *2024-07-23* Just use INaturalist. Amount of species is also very limited here **Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback. In the future Seabook will be absolutely free for the individuals. For now 50% of all species available for free. ### 2/5 — Paywall to view fish & missing fish *2025-12-22* I had high hopes for this because this type of app is needed, but I’m ultimately really disappointed. I saw a Rainbow Triggerfish today and so wanted to log it: the app says there is no species by that name. Then I searched for humuhumunukunukuapua’a, and nothing comes up and I finally see that triggerfish listed as “wedgefin” when the much more common name is Reef Triggerfish. But I can’t check to see if that’s an option because well, it’s behind a paywall (and sidenote: the Hawaiian names for fish should be included in search terms!). I’m not opposed to paying for apps, but when it’s set up this way (hiding information instead of say, additional features) it’s hard to justify a cost. **Developer response:** Hi 👋 Thank you for taking the time to leave this review - I genuinely appreciate it (not everyone does). I’m really sorry you ended up disappointed when you just wanted to log what you saw You’re right about the search and naming. I’ve added this to my backlog, and the next thing I’m planning to spend time on is expanding the languages the app supports, expanding amount of species - including adding more alternative/common fish names across different languages so search works the way divers expect. I also hear you on the paywall point. I’m not ignoring that feedback - I’m reviewing how this is presented because I understand why it can feel like core information is being hidden. I always open to suggestions and feedback 💙🫶 ### 3/5 — Can’t ID spotfin croaker *2025-06-25* UPDATE: Developer reached out and clarified that the app works best with live fish in natural conditions. The app did correctly ID a dead yellow tail croaker in the sand. It failed when trying to ID a spot fin croaker on my kitchen table. So maybe that wasn’t so natural. Future improvements will include location option. That should help a lot. No other fish ID app does that yet. PREVIOUS: It IDs a picture of a spot fin croaker caught in Southern California as a “red drum” found in the Atlantic. No good for me. **Developer response:** Thanks for your report. I see other identifications were successful. Regarding Spotfin Croaker: the fish was photographed dead, out of water, and with folded fins — that makes it very hard for the model to identify correctly. Recognition works best on live fish in natural conditions. In future updates, I’ll add the option to provide a location to help improve results in tricky cases like this. UPDATE (Jan 30, 2026): I’ve improved the recognition quality. You still not able to save your searches now, but I’m working on it ### 3/5 — Great to find fishes…wish for some improvements *2024-06-07, version 1.6.0* As a user who loves to snorkel and to scuba dive it is always interesting to have a look Alter on what I explored under water. Most scuba diving apps don’t offer it or not good enough. There are other App which can analyze photos. But not everyone has a camera or takes at the right time the shot. So thank you for this opportunity to search for it. The app has a great design. I also miss Favorites combined with the dive sites I have been to. Maybe a community could help to gather the data and add information. Will definitely buy premium for next diving holiday. Features i would love to see in the future: 1. a setting where you can add creature name in another language than set in app preferences. To be more precise: I have set the app to German. But when diving internationally, it would be great to see the English (or another language you can specify) creature name next to German one, so when searching something with your international dive buddy, it’s more comfortable. 2. an in app link to google picture search for the specific creature, so it’s very easy, quick and comfortable to look for more pictures to compare with what you saw underwater 3. an in app link to Wikipedia (if exists) ### 5/5 — A wonderful app. *2024-08-23* As an aspiring marine biologist, I’ve been looking for apps I can quickly reference for fun factoids! This app is the first one I downloaded. After reading the reviews, I was kind of worried, but I can completely understand why a membership is needed. If I had the opportunity, I would absolutely donate to this project. Spreading awareness to the needs of the ocean in a beautiful app such as this is exactly what we need. Please download this app! You can’t access everything without a subscription, it’s true, but there’s lots of stuff you can access!
