One thing that I wish the functionality would include is cross-link launching of articles in the app from links in subscriber e-mail. Often times I click on a link to an article in the e-mail, which launches the browser (for which I have to always log in to read in private mode). Instead, it should launch or link to the article in the Seattle Times Mobile app. It’s a pain and a hassle that it doesn’t do this. (Feature request by a subscriber). For this, I give the mobile app 2.5 stars. ### 2/5 — Need additional subscription to use *2026-03-18, version 8.9.0* I pay for the Seattle times online subscription to read unlimited articles. But even when logged in using that account I can only read 2 articles on the app. You need to buy a SPECIAL APP membership to use the app fully. Currently- “Tens of thousands of UW Medicine patients have been waiting for this news.” You’re a news organization, don’t write headlines like. The app is still poorly organized. Half of what’s on the top news page is on the local news page. That’s just a waste. Not to mention what ends up on top news is often ridiculous and have to go to the search bar (thanks for finally getting one!) to find actual news on things I already know are happening. ### 2/5 — Seattle Times deserves better *2025-06-16, version 7.10.1* Photos do not render properly and linked articles don’t launch the app. The Seattle Times is a valuable resource for our region. The reporters and subscribers deserve better. A stronger app could also improve revenue at a time when the paper needs it. ### 3/5 — Good paper; mediocre app *2025-04-26* This app is annoying enough that I’m compelled to write a review. For some reason, when you click on some links to other Seattle Times stories in the app, the app sends you to safari, where you have to log in to your Seattle Times account separately. Why? Equally annoying, the algorithm at show Seattle Times stories to you in, for example, the google search app, but unlike other news apps, when you click, it doesn’t take you to the app on your phone, and you hit the paywall. Annoying. These issues are not groundbreaking or insurmountable. Is there a shortage of competent app developers in Seattle???? ### 2/5 — Overpriced *2025-03-06, version 7.7.4* Mostly a bunch of stories you could read anywhere. But the biggest issue is the price, they still haven’t figured it out. Most folks are not going to pay $20 a month for a digital only subscription and they know it because for the exact same price you can get digital plus the hard copy Sunday Paper (if you live close enough to Seattle). Now they’ve restricted free stories to 5 a month trying to force people into subscriptions, when they should just lower the price to $9.99 or less. 1/2 of something is better than nothing. At $19.99 a month they aren’t competitive with a more extensive news source like Apple News at $12.99 a month. Whoever is in charge of marketing is delusional or they’ve decided the only market they’re going to chase is the well to do in Bellevue and the working class folks can just lump it. There are plenty of news sources with more extensive coverage for a lot less or even free. Yeah they have some unique reporting now and then but most of it is reprints from other news organization like the AP, Washington Post and NY Times. ### 2/5 — Overpriced *2025-03-01* Mostly a bunch of stories you could read anywhere. I use it to stay up-to-date local news. But, the search function does not work at all. Thanks. ### 3/5 — Sometimes stops displaying content *2024-12-25* Recently, there has been a problem with this app. When scrolling through an article, sometimes it will freeze up and stop scrolling, sometimes at a photograph it will just never display, sometimes the text after a photograph the paragraph of content just shows as white space. Sometimes when scrolling back toward the beginning of an article, the content will of disappeared. In short, the application has become buggy And does not reliably display either photographs or article content. When this happens, it is necessary to back out of the article and try to read it again, or sometimes even close the app. This did not used to happen, so this is an introduced set of bugs or problems, an issue that was not there before ### 3/5 — App is very outdated *2024-12-21, version 6.7.1* Love Seattle Times and love keeping up with local news. But this app is stuck in 2010. No search option makes it very hard to find articles that aren’t on the homepage. Links of other ST articles open in safari and there’s no option to open on ST app. We live in an epicenter of tech savy talent, and this is what we get from the biggest paper in the city. ### 3/5 — Phone overheats on this app *2024-11-22, version 7.6.0* News coverage of Seattle is good but this app overheats my phone for some reason. Lack of search for archives or the day’s paper is annoying, but search in general is a mess at the moment and frankly no search is better than AI searches. The ad inserts are problematic because they interfere with phone scrolling, being so oversized. The facsimile app allows you to print out crosswords and take ‘em on the ferry. Previous review: It cannot be this difficult to write an app that automatically yanks the full text of every posted article off a server and dumps it into the app. How many programmers are there in Seattle? Apparently the Times can hire none. No search. Incomplete content. Links open outside the app. Yesterday’s news today. No font size adjustment (for something whose readership certainly trends towards needing reading glasses). Come ON. Update: the late-to-never article posting has been fixed, but links still open outside the app. No good reason exists for a user to have to log in multiple times to read something referenced in a current article. ### 5/5 — Search! I want search capabilities *2023-05-08, version 6.6.1* So frustrating seeing an article on the front page of the printed edition, going to the app, and not seeing it listed and no way to search for it. And don’t tell me about loading the print version, that is not a suitable workaround. Not to mention I just might want to search for something. Forget it, I’ll load a search engin, look for the article, then click anything BUT Seattle times. 0/10. Do not use ### 5/5 — Fix this app PLEASE *2022-04-09* Hey Seattle Times I love your paper. I pay for a subscription but this app is really below the line and stinks in so many ways.. 1 THERE IS NO SEARCH . Want to find related articles or something you have read in the past? Nope can’t find it because there is no search bar. 2 LINKING FORCES you into the web browser. Really ? Dang well what’s the point of having an app ? 3. MISSING SECTIONS of the physical newspaper. Again really who designed this app? I thought I paid to see the entire paper. 4. STOPPING MID-ARTICLE. What ?Why ? 5. NOT UPDATED often enough. It’s only seems to occur when forced by a new release of operating system. I know there are many other frustrated readers. I was born and raised there mid-century. My kids, grandkids and other family members are still there. I retired to Central Oregon but read the ST daily. My brother and I were paper boys in the 50s. I always helped him carry the big load on Sundays in the neighborhood around NE 65 Street above 25th Ave NE. I visit there often and appreciate the Corona Virus updates, not to mention everything else. I love keeping up with what’s going on there as it affects me and my family. Things are different there now. Gone are the simple days of my childhood in the Wallingford area just north of Ravenna. I still love Seattle and all it represents. It is my hometown. The app is much improved, with fewer intrusive ads. It’s still a bit buggy and fails when other news apps I use don’t do this. However, I want to support my local newspaper and now I’m rating the app a 5 star for effort and continued improvement. ### 5/5 — Easy to use, easy to read. *2020-06-11* And worth reading. Generally when I land at Seatec it’s a quick ride to the Factoria exit,and then the thrill of pulling into their driveway. We easily flow and start our reunion and visit. This grandmother has to wait for hugs and her Girl Scout cookies. I love your newspaper. Here in New York, I get a flavor of my family’s hometown. The photos and reporting keep me connected. Until Kennedy and Seatec reconnect, I’m grateful, every day for your quality coverage of the day’s’ events.
