## What is Seder Olam?

A timeline of Jewish history from Creation to the year 6000: 1,051 events and 2,667 articles on people, places, books and ideas, every date shown together with its source. The whole reference is in English, Hebrew and Russian.

THE TIMELINE
Drag with a finger and the centuries move under your hand. Life spans show who lived alongside whom, and the shape of each bar says what is actually known: recorded years of birth and death, years of reign, or only the years the sources speak of. On the phone a brass rail runs down the right edge: the roller zooms the timeline in and out, the two-finger pinch is precise, and the time-slice button sits at the bottom under your thumb.

TIME SLICE
Put the cursor on any year and see who was alive: the sages and figures of Jewish history, and separately those who lived elsewhere in the world at the same moment. The cursor shows the Hebrew and the common year at the top and has a grip at the bottom to drag; while you drag, the slice card turns to glass so the timeline shows through.

THIS WEEK
Once a day, a single page: what is coming in the week ahead — festivals and yahrzeits — and, kept separate, what happened on these same days in earlier years. Below them, one fact with an Explore button.

THE WORLD ALONGSIDE
356 rulers, thinkers and witnesses of other nations and 458 events of world history — from the Mari archive and Hatshepsut to the Lisbon earthquake, Edison's lamp and Chernobyl — so that you can see what was happening around.

THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
The Yishuv and the State of Israel, the aliyot and the wars, the Shoah and Soviet Jewry, the disputes over Reform, Orthodoxy and Zionism — with names, dates and sources, from Petach Tikva and Degania to the Knesset, the maabarot and the Second Lebanon War.

THE CHAIN OF TRANSMISSION
The forty links of Maimonides — from Moses to Rav Ashi — the sealing of the Talmud, and the later succession of halakhic authority. Every link is named and grounded.

TWO CHRONOLOGIES, HONESTLY
Dates follow the count of Seder Olam Rabbah; where academic dating differs, the app says so plainly and gives both figures.

TWELVE ROUTES
Ready-made paths through the timeline: where to begin, the five exiles, from Sinai to the Talmud, how the Tanakh took shape, the two Temples, the Ninth of Av, the return to Zion, Abraham's journey, Chasidim and Misnagdim, the twelve tribes, the chasidic lines, who ruled the Land of Israel.

ALSO INSIDE
The Ruler: lay it on the timeline and read who ruled the land and where the people lived in any century. A world map, the Jewish year with its festivals and fasts, the weekly portion, 71 chasidic courts and their rebbes, a self-test by era, 327 “Did you know?” cards, an index and gematria. Eleven themes, dark and light.

IN DEVELOPMENT
The schools of Torah learning, the family tree and the glossary are already open in the menu and still being completed.

Works offline: the whole reference lives inside the app.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.5 — 2026-10-27

A THIRD LARGER: 2,667 articles and 1,051 events instead of 1,963 and 739, in all three languages, every date with its source.

THE TIMELINE ON THE PHONE, REBUILT. On the right, a brass rail: the roller zooms the timeline in and out, towards the slice marker when the slice is on; at the bottom, under the thumb, the time-slice button. The two-finger pinch is now precise. The era bar is now a bar of its own.

THE SLICE CURSOR is redrawn: at the top a tag with the Hebrew and the common year, at the bottom a grip to drag. While you drag, the slice card turns to glass so the timeline shows through. The cursor no longer hides behind the labels or lags behind the finger.

THE RULER is rebuilt for the phone: the window stays put, the years run along the ruler, “Who ruled the land” and “Where the people lived” read in columns.

THE SETTINGS MENU is reassembled: theme and language as lists that show their names, sound in the same row, everything in one style. There are now eleven themes; the new one is the light “Green”.

IPHONE AND IPAD. On the iPhone the app runs in portrait, where the timeline has room. On the iPad it works as in the browser, with the brass ring and any orientation.

THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. Fifty new events: Petach Tikva and Degania, Tel Hai, the Haganah, the Third, Fourth and Fifth Aliyah, the University and the Technion, Hebron 1929, the Irgun, Lehi and the Palmach, the Struma, the Altalena, the first Knesset, the maabarot, who is a Jew, Eli Cohen, Gush Emunim, Shas, the intifada, the Second Lebanon War; the Bund, Treblinka, Denmark, Hungary 1944, Mikhoels, the Leningrad trial, Agnon's Nobel; Reform and the Chatam Sofer, Hirsch, the Hungarian schism, Mizrachi and Aguda, the classics of Yiddish.

THE WORLD ALONGSIDE. 190 new figures of other nations and 120 events of world history, from Hatshepsut and the Mari archive to the Abraham Accords.

PEOPLE. More than a hundred new articles on sages of every era — Tannaim and Amoraim, Geonim, the sages of the East and the Maghreb, the rabbis of Lithuania and Poland, the sages of our own day; the line from Seth to Noah; 127 women of Jewish history. And people of the twentieth century: Trumpeldor, Bialik, Agnon, Sholem Aleichem, Katznelson, Dayan, Eshkol, Peres, Sharon, Shamir, Mikhoels, Dubnow, Graetz, Alterman, Amichai, Rav Weissmandl, Zivia Lubetkin, Wiesenthal and others.

PLACES. Eighty new towns and regions: Bethlehem, Damascus, Lachish; Kovno, Minsk, Pinsk, Lubavitch, Slonim; Galicia, Bobov, Uman, Berdichev; Budapest, Basel; Brooklyn, Lakewood, Mea Shearim; Moscow, the Kotel, Treblinka, Tel Hai, Degania. Their names in the articles are now links.

THE PRESENT YEAR is taken from the Hebrew calendar: after Rosh HaShana the timeline no longer lags a year behind. There are now 327 “Did you know?” cards.

### 1.3 — 2026-09-28

HEBREW, IN FULL. The whole reference is now translated into Hebrew: 1,963 articles and all 739 events, and with them the timeline, the map, the circle of the year, the weekly portion, the twelve routes, the index and gematria. Until now Hebrew covered only the interface. The 280 “Did you know?” cards now come in all three languages.

THIS WEEK. Once a day, a single page: what is coming in the week ahead — festivals and yahrzeits — and, kept separate, what happened on these same days in earlier years. What awaits and what already happened are no longer mixed up. Below them, one fact with an Explore button.

Thirty-one new articles. Twelve women: Helena, queen of Adiabene, Judith Montefiore, Emma Lazarus, Flora Sassoon, Bertha Pappenheim, Manya Shochat, Rachel Yanait Ben-Zvi, Sarah Aaronsohn, Rachel the poetess, Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson, Nechama Leibowitz, Anne Frank. Seven rabbis: Chaim Pinto of Mogador, Moshe Mordechai Epstein, Tucazinsky, Eliezer Yehuda Finkel of Mir, Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz, Shalom Messas, Pinchas Hirschprung. Twelve events of world history: Lisbon 1755, Edison's lamp, the Lumiere cinema, the first Nobel Prizes, the Wright brothers, Einstein's miraculous year, the Spanish flu, penicillin, the double helix, the Cuban missile crisis, 1968 and Chernobyl.

Search answers a keystroke in forty milliseconds instead of seven hundred. The timeline is fifteen megabytes lighter and moves more smoothly.

At the bottom of the Sections menu there is now an “In development” heading, with Schools of learning, Family tree and Glossary under it. They are open, but still being completed.

### 1.2 — 2026-09-10

The reference has grown to 1,906 articles and 700 events.

The world alongside. Beside Jewish events now stand the rulers and documents of other nations: the Mari archive and Hatshepsut, Septimius Severus and Caracalla's edict, Origen, Jerome and Augustine, Muawiya and Charles Martel, Henry IV's charter to the Jews of Speyer.

New chasidic teachers and courts: Izbica and Radzin in full, Sadigura without a gap, the Shpoler Zeide, the Maor vaShemesh, the Saraf of Mogielnica, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. And beyond Chasidism — the Dubno Maggid, the Aruch laNer, the Baal HaSulam, Rabbi Shmuel Salant, Rabbi Yitzchak Nissim, Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe.

A new section (in Russian), Schools of Torah Learning: a river of schools from Sinai to our own day and the four gates of PaRDeS.

On a rebbe's card you can now step through the dynasty: who came before him and who after.

The circle of the year shows festivals, fasts and seventy-eight events with a Hebrew date, from the dedication of the First Temple to the burning of the Talmud in Paris.

Search groups results by kind and computes the gematria of a name.

The timeline is smoother and faster: no light patches, a flat background, and year marks no longer collide with labels. On the phone the menu opens from the side and holds the theme, your notes and About, while Sections are sections only and appear on every page.

### 1.1 — 2026-09-02

The app now carries the full reference base — the same one as the website.

- 1,049 sages and figures, 633 events, 173 books, 137 places, 169 concepts.
- Teacher–student lines re-checked one by one against the sources: doubtful and mistaken links removed, missing ones added.
- New — Show on the timeline. In any article the golden year badge is now a button: tap it and the timeline opens at that year, with the time slice — who was alive alongside.
- Time slice: more room, and the "who was alive" list now reads on one line.
- Small things you see every day: capitalised labels, no more doubled icons in the menu, and a top bar that no longer wraps on the phone.
