### 3/5 — Could be better

*2025-01-06, version 2.0.4*

I needed ability to see five values to match five-step shadows to highlights distinctions so went with something else.

### 2/5 — Details of in app purchases

*2024-10-29, version 2.0.4*

This looks like an interesting and useful app, but there is no indication of the price of in app purchases until you try to use a feature. Even then, there is no indication of the duration of that purchase. Is 99 cents for one photo? All photos? A week? Forever? Does it include the contour lines feature which I think I deduced from the description? Lack of info makes me hesitant to buy or use. I know the first buy in is very small, but it’s a blind one. Info up front, please.

### 3/5 — Interesting art tool

*2024-10-09, version 2.0.4*

Looking for an app that enables me to look at my work in gray scale to ensure balance of composition. This was ok but a little bit of fiddling around required.
I really need an app that l can click a button and change colour to grayscale. This is not it!!

### 4/5 — Updated review

*2024-03-04, version 2.0.4*

I hadn’t used this for some time but then found it was crashing on launch under iOS 14 - but after reply from the dev I tried deleting and reinstalling which fixed it. If you want to see value this is super useful.

### 3/5 — Good but

*2023-10-25, version 2.0.4*

Wish there was a button on screen to take a photo

### 4/5 — Love the app, but a question

*2023-05-01, version 2.0.4*

The live crosshair reading seems almost too sensitive, with the numbers constantly jumping up or down 6 points regardless of how steady I hold the thing. Is there a way to reduce the sensitivity a bit or average out the readings over a second’s time? I get that it is simply being accurate, but it is an accuracy beyond my appreciation on a tiny phone screen.

### 5/5 — Works fine.

*2023-04-07, version 2.0.4*

It works as intended.

### 5/5 — So helpful

*2023-03-12, version 2.0.4*

Love this app
Had a minor issue with a bug -reset my phone and am able to complete in app purchase to load photos
fantastic app. I’m learning watercolor need to reduce images to no more than four tones, and the this app is versatile
Exactly what I needed
Thanks

### 5/5 — Very useful!

*2023-03-08, version 2.0.4*

Very useful tool for any artist painting from photographs.

### 5/5 — This is wonderful!

*2023-03-07, version 2.0.4*

New to color theory and trying to train my eyes to the value scale for painting. This is helping me with instant feedback to my guessing what a value is in the world around me. It’s a great game to play in down time and really helps reinforce the principles.
Highly recommend this for all ages and skill levels.

### 5/5 — One of my fav apps for painting

*2023-01-21, version 2.0.4*

Seeing the right values is a mainstay of making a good painting. This app has been part of my process since it first came out. The notan part is ok but gives me mixed results. But the crosshair part is just stellar to figure out where the darkest darks and lightest light are

### 5/5 — Fantastic artists’ tool

*2022-10-22, version 2.0.4*

Thank you! I have found this app extremely helpful in the planning process of paintings based on photographic references.

### 5/5 — live camera view value scale is awesome

*2022-10-22, version 2.0.4*

Very useful tool. Love the 2-3-4 grey scale view.

### 5/5 — Brilliant for painting

*2022-08-13, version 2.0.4*

Only just found this app, out of desperation! Always struggled with tone and value when painting and this has transformed everything for me

### 5/5 — So helpful in painting

*2022-07-27, version 2.0.4*

I’ve often converted photos to grayscale in the iPhone camera app to be able to better view values but this app allows me to choose 2, 3, or 4 value scales so that the differences really stand out. It also allows me to take a photo directly which means I can check my paintings as I paint to ensure I’m getting the values right. Absolutely worth the dollar cost.

### 3/5 — I don’t understand

*2022-06-06, version 2.0.4*

How do you take a photo and can you use an existing photo? I would like to use the app on my artwork then look at it or print.

### 4/5 — Superb

*2022-05-01, version 2.0.4*

As a designer, one of the best way of checking luminosity is to view in greyscale. For only a buck, this app imports a photo, views it as greys and then saves it out. Wonderful time-saver. Five stars if the controls were made simpler and easier to see.

### 5/5 — So helpful!

*2022-03-29, version 2.0.4*

I’ve been struggling with a painting trying to understand why it looked so unrealistic. This helped huge! Now I can see where my values are off in comparison to the photo. I love this app!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Unusable

*2026-01-11, version 2.0.4*

I paid for sub for year and now it won’t open.

### 1/5 — Of little value

*2023-04-08, version 2.0.4*

I downloaded this app to try only to be disappointed as other apps seem to do more with no in apps purchases needed. Therefore, I am deleting it because it is not worth the space it takes up on my iPad.

### 1/5 — Can’t take a picture without hints wrecking it.

*2021-12-02, version 2.0.4*

Useless.

### 1/5 — This isn’t really free

*2021-10-27, version 2.0.4*

This is a typical app that looks like it is free but requires a nominal purchase to use the functionality in any meaningful way (take photo or use existing photo to check values). Just ask for the 99p up front. I’m deleting instead of buying because I feel cheated - I’d happily pay the 99p if asked up front.

### 1/5 — App is not what i thought it would be

*2021-09-24, version 2.0.4*

App didnt work out how i hoped.. wasted my money

### 1/5 — Bad

*2020-04-14, version 2.0.4*

This app is not opening

### 1/5 — So far......eh

*2019-03-25, version 2.0.4*

No grid, can’t move around the page for center of interest placement, nothing special, might as well just use value colored overlays😗

### 1/5 — Misleading

*2019-02-23, version 2.0.4*

It seems misleading to not have a price on your app until you actually open the app & then see that there is a price. This is the first time I’ve encountered this. I have no problem paying for it if I know in the first place that there is a fee.

### 1/5 — What’s New

*2018-08-09, version 2.0.4*

Not happy with app especially after paying a .99 fee to use camera roll. Cannot delete photo without having to delete app and then repaying the fee when you bring it back from the cloud. Useless!

### 1/5 — Great idea but doesnt work

*2018-08-07, version 2.0.4*

Heard about this app from a network of 16k people in it, downloaded it, couldnt access my photos without paying 99p...ok. Did, accessed my photos, selected one, then couldnt get out of the screen as the cancel button didnt work. Deleted it, reloaded and still doing the same. Is this a rip off?

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Best app

*2025-11-25, version 2.0.4*

I think this is so helpful

### 5/5 — Very useful, simple design

*2025-10-27, version 2.0.4*

This is very helpful when working out a painting and a subject

### 5/5 — Excellent little tool

*2025-03-23, version 2.0.4*

I’m a landscape painter, and this is an excellent little tool to see values in reference photos. 99 cents well spent. Save the value rendering back to your camera roll, and compare side by sides. Yes, there are other apps with more features, but they’re either full of ads or charge by the month. This does what I need.

### 5/5 — Excellent tool for artists

*2024-11-23, version 2.0.4*

Does exactly what I need without unnecessary complications.

### 5/5 — Great little tool for artists

*2024-09-17, version 2.0.4*

I was looking for an app that would help me do value studies; this one is easy to use, effective, and definitely worth the dollar to buy. FYI the free version allows you to take and save photos in greyscale; the paid version adds the ability to do that with photos from your collection.

### 5/5 — Great app for painting!

*2024-04-02, version 2.0.4*

I just got this app and find that it’s super user friendly and helps me so much with my portraits. This is a great app at a great price!

### 5/5 — Love this for composition

*2024-03-01, version 2.0.4*

Great app!

### 5/5 — The best app for an artist.

*2024-01-27, version 2.0.4*

So useful and straightforward design. Wonderful app.

### 5/5 — Great help for a Painter!

*2023-08-09, version 2.0.4*

It is a huge help to understand the value patterns for my paintings!
Adding a blur function and extending filters to work on colored images would enhance the app's capabilities.
Thank you!

### 5/5 — Nice

*2023-04-12, version 2.0.4*

Good for art references.
