## What is Selcouth?

selcouth (adj.) — strange, unusual, rare; unfamiliar; wondrous.

I made Selcouth to spend more time with the authors I love. You get a passage from Dickens, Dostoevsky, or Cather, a few words missing, and you put them back. Try one, from Pride and Prejudice:

"Nothing is more deceitful," said Darcy, "than the appearance of ______. It is often only carelessness of opinion, and sometimes an indirect boast."

honesty? virtue? humility?

Austen wrote humility. That's the game. Just you and the passage, weighing the words the way the author did.

There's a commonplace book for the words and passages you want to keep; any kept word can be revisited in context, across every book in your library. There are quiet game mechanics too (ranks, rare words to hunt), but the passage is the point, not the score.

Thirty classics are free (more than 9,000 passages), with collections when you want more: Gothic & Weird, The Russians, The Sea, Story-Books, and more planned. Each collection is a one-time purchase, yours forever, never a subscription; the full library today is 157 books (more than 44,000 passages). If you'd rather spend ten minutes with Middlemarch than a feed, this is for you.

### 5/5 — Great Pick Up and Play Reading Game

*2026-08-08*

Really enjoyable to play, simple game that exposes me to many books I know but haven’t read yet. All about the passages and words with no in your face, annoying mechanics.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.0.3 — 2026-08-15

The Selcouth Roll is open. At the foot of Progress you'll now find a register waiting for the first readers to reach the summit. No one has yet become selcouth.

Also in this update:
• Finish every book in a collection, or find every word in a hunt, and you'll earn a crest for it.
• In the Library, tap an author's name to play across all of their books at once.
• Pack pages now show how many passages they hold.
• Rows and lists throughout got a pass of small polish, including a more tactile press.

### 1.0.2 — 2026-08-11

A new collection: Story-Books. Forty-one childhood classics, from The Secret Garden and The Wind in the Willows to Anne of Green Gables and Oz. Selcouth is also about half its old size, so it downloads faster and takes less of your phone.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-08-11

Fixed a bug with author sorting, added the "Gothic & Weird" pack (see in the "Library"), and updated the pack title and roster for "Story-Book" (coming soon, also in "Library"). Updated promo and description text. Nothing else changed.

### 1.0.0 — 2026-08-06

No release notes.
