## What is Self?

Self is the privacy-first way to prove you're human and verify who you are online (or give your agent a secure identity), without handing over your personal data. Trusted by Google, Opera, and 15M+ users.

Verify your real-world identity once using a biometric passport, biometric national ID cards, Aadhaar, or any other supported identity document. Once registered, you can prove the specific attributes services require, such as your humanity, age, or nationality, without ever disclosing the underlying document or your personal information.

Key Features:
PROOF OF HUMAN: Prove you're a real person, not a bot, fake account, or AI impersonator. Defend yourself against fraud and deepfakes.
AGE VERIFICATION: Confirm you're over 18 (or any age threshold) without revealing your birthday. Built for social apps, marketplaces, and age-gated services.
PRE-KYC: Verify your eligibility (age, country of residence, sanctions, etc.) before any KYC process, only sharing your personal information with companies and institutions once necessary.
AGENT ID: Delegate your identity credentials to your autonomous agent, unlocking broader utility and access across the internet.
PRIVACY BY DESIGN: Self is using the latest zero-knowledge technology, fully audited by the world’s best security experts. All data is stored locally on the user’s device — never on any servers. When a user verifies their identity, a verifiable credential is created and saved securely in the app. There’s no cloud storage, no centralized database, and no way for anyone - including Self - to access the data without the user's consent.

"We’re committed to ensuring developers can build faster with reduced friction while maintaining industry‑leading security standards," said Rich Widmann, Google. "Integrating Self allows us to further this mission with frontier zero‑knowledge solutions."

Why Self
Defend against bots, deepfakes, AI impersonation, and identity fraud
Meet age and compliance requirements without surrendering personal information
Carry one verified identity across the apps you use, instead of re-uploading documents at every sign-up
Help establish a global standard for verified identity that keeps people, not platforms, in control of their data

## Key features

- zk Passport for secure sign-ins

### 5/5 — Proof of Everything

*2026-06-03*

I love the fact that I can just send a proof of myself without handing my ID over to companies that always get hacked. This is the future especially with agents acting on behalf of me. Proof of everything must happen!

### 5/5 — Best app

*2025-12-24*

Fast and reliable

### 1/5 — just crash

*2025-11-20*

crash when scan

### 4/5 — Additionnal document

*2025-10-10, version 2.6.9*

Waiting for driving licence support

### 5/5 — Aave and Velodrome Boosted Rewards

*2025-09-24*

Using Self I am getting double the awards on Aave and Velodrome. Proving I am who I say is an incredibly powerful feature that more devs should be using.

### 5/5 — My Experience

*2025-08-16*

The Self (zk) app provides a secure and private way to verify identity using zero-knowledge proofs.
The recent updates improve user experience with better document scanning and proof history.
It’s easy to use and keeps personal data safe.
Adding support for more document types would be great.
Overall, a reliable app for privacy-focused identity verification.

### 5/5 — kevin

*2025-07-21*

super cool application!!!

### 1/5 — Scans sensitive information, fails to verify

*2025-03-24*

Yet another over-engineered app with minimal UI that overpromises and underdelivers. Self allegedly lets iOS devices scan machine-readable passport data (if you're very patient, when it finally works) and then talks to the RFID chip in e-Passports to confirm your data, but my result is just a silent red X before you're immediately kicked back to the start of the process with no message about what even failed nor why. There is zero support despite the problem being on their end. My USA passport is valid and works everywhere else I've used it, and I've never used Self before. I received the same result no matter how many times I went through the entire verification flow.

3/24/2025: Self is somehow even worse now, and deleting and reinstalling it doesn't help. No matter how well lit and/or glare-free the image is, Self no longer even recognizes a passport when scanning the MRZ (Machine Readable Zone, the two lines at the bottom of the photo page) no matter how stabilized and well aligned the camera is. I'm using an iPhone 15 Pro Max with an undamaged, clean camera that I've never had any issue with before.

### 1/5 — Scans sensitive information, fails to verify

*2025-03-06*

Yet another over-engineered app that doesn't do what it claims. The app lets your iOS device scan machine-readable passport data (if you're very patient, when it finally works) and then talks to the RFID chip in e-Passports as a second verification, but the result is just a silent red X before you're immediately kicked back to the start of the process with no message about what even failed nor why. There is zero support despite the problem being on their end. My passport was valid and works everywhere else I've used it, and I had never used this app before. I tried again, and got the same result.

### 5/5 — Clean, intuitive and exciting

*2025-02-28, version 2.4.7*

App was super easy to set up. Scanned my passport and got my identity pass in a few seconds.
