Clear directions and commentary. Except there are some stops they leave out, but for good reason so it’s tough to blame them. These are “local only” spots and I guess it’s now an “if you know you know” type deal. My favorite stop to the road to Hana isn’t listed on here and it’s called “Venus Pool”, and it’s one of the most breathtaking places you could ever visit. Black sand beach, with a swimmable tide pool attached. You can also cliff jump into the pool. I could’ve sworn it use to be listed in the guide (as I’ve used Shaka before), but it no longer does. I had to keep pausing it and then checking with Google Maps to see where we were to try to time the guide to play at appropriate locations. This was frustrating and would have been impossible if you were driving by yourself. It was great initially and we missed every single waterfall! All 12!! Inaccurate information or none whatsoever ever where it mattered. ### 1/5 — Horrible *2026-05-10, version 9.1.6* The concept is good. The execution is unbelievably obnoxious. Imagine trying to enjoy Maui while a fake over-caffeinated tour guide constantly interrupts your own music every few minutes with corny narration, forced jokes, and tourist-trap energy you cannot permanently disable. That is this app. Worse, the app randomly injects its own terrible music over your personal playlists. Not just narration. Their actual music. You can temporarily mute it, but the app keeps forcing itself back into the audio experience every chance it gets. Just when you think it has stopped hijacking your drive, the narrator barges back in again followed by more awful canned music. There is no proper silent mode. No real way to keep the useful GPS route functionality while permanently disabling the intrusive audio. That is an absurd oversight for a driving app. The maps and route ideas are decent. The narrator and audio implementation completely ruin it. This app feels designed for people who want nonstop manufactured “entertainment” shoved at them every thirty seconds instead of simply experiencing Hawaii naturally at their own pace. The constant interruptions completely destroy the atmosphere of the drive. Scenic coastline, ocean views, jungle roads, your own carefully chosen music... then suddenly some clown narrator starts talking over everything again like a bad theme park ride. For an app this expensive, the inability to permanently silence narration and background music is ridiculous. Beautiful islands. Embedded ads for food establishments ( aunty Sandy for instance) and no mention at all regarding where to get Huli huli chicken. Sometimes very accurate directions for some sites and terribly ambiguous directions to others (coming up “soon”) I feel I was taken in by the overrated other reviews. ### 1/5 — Didn’t work *2025-03-21, version 8.4.4* Don’t waste your money on this app. Even with downloading the tour we wanted to do, it never worked. ### 1/5 — Not the best audio tour *2025-02-12, version 8.4.4* This audio tour has a great deal of blank time that is filled with the same music over and over. It also must be done in numerical order, where other apps do not require this. Lastly it takes you along the coast on Rt 30 to 340. This is a narrow road, with several dozen spots that are one lane only, very limited and typically no guard rails on cliff edges with elevation of at least a thousand feet, and hair pin switch backs for over 10 miles. This is not a road for tourists and no app should ever send someone to this road for the sake of “fun”. It is extremely dangerous! It worked well on haleakala but On road to hana the audio didn't work even though the map was downloaded. Tried everything, with and without Bluetooth connedted to the car, with or without data on, tried to close and reopen. I purchased the $20 bundle for all of the routes because I wasn’t sure at the time of the purchase which routes I was going to drive while in Maui. I downloaded the routes prior to my flight and discovered they didn’t save to my phone when I opened the app back up the next day. The same thing continued to happen. I would download the apps and they disappeared shortly after. I was in the process of downloading them again when I started driving from the southern part of Maui up to Hana Highway, but it never finished and I lost cell phone reception. I later searched through the app and saw this message on their help page: “Unfortunately there is a random bug in our app that causes some users to lose their download after closing the app. We are working hard to get this fixed. Right now the best solution is to leave the app open until the download is completely finished and then tap ‘ready to go’ and then ‘start the tour’. This seems to lock in the tour. If this has happened to you we are very sorry! We hope to get this fixed ASAP.” The download takes a long time. I could not have judged how much time I would have needed to pull over to the side of the road and wait for the downloads to complete, and I did not know if they would work even after all that. It was a frustrating experience to say the least. Luckily, my hotel had given me a hard copy of sites and mile markers worth stopping at on the way to Hana. I bought the full package for Maui, but we only got to do the Road to Hana (a full day), and Haleakala at Sunset (we did it in 5 hours). Both tours were excellent and enjoyed by kids and adults alike. The app worked flawlessly and used GPS to explain highlights on our trip. In between landmarks, the music was great. On the way back, the history of Maui was interesting and the quality of the story-telling top notch.
