The ratings give a broad but good overview of how ethical (or unethical) a company is - ratings are not for products themselves. I use this app all the time to check the 'eco credentials' and ethical nature of the company behind products I'm interested in buying. I find it especially helpful when comparing similar items, it helps me to choose the more ethical one as you see a list of alternatives in each category. Overall I would rate 4* because there's always things that can be improved; I especially find it frustrating that sometimes I can't find ratings for particular companies or brands, so I have to do my own research to find the name of the overarching company. But overall it's a great app and very simple to use, although the ratings could be confusing for someone new to it. ### 4/5 — Very informative app *2025-03-13, version 2.4.6* This app has changed the way I shop. When you see a product heavily advertised, worth looking up the company here and finding out just how ethical they are - you’re in for a surprise as some of our best known companies are directly involved or complicit in many unethical practices. Wish more people knew about Shop Ethical, as we are collectively responsible for what happens here on earth. More up to date information would be helpful. ### 5/5 — The Resource I’ve Been Looking For *2020-11-16, version 2.4.5* I am so excited to have found this app. Since I’ve decided to stop supporting brands that wreak havoc on the earth, our fellow animals and humans, and instead invest in products that are in line with my values, I have often times found myself stuck for hours searching the web for shreds of information. This app makes it easy to get right to the source! Since I am based in the US, I do wish it were more tailored to items available to me locally. However, I am happy to support this wonderful endeavor and look forward to the expansion of the database. ### 5/5 — When you find out your baby’s formula is toxic... thank God for this app *2020-09-16, version 2.4.5* Thank you so much for everything you are doing to provide us, the shoppers, with clarity and informed choices. My sister told me to download this app and love how easy it is to use and offer share insights to my friends. I have made plenty of switches, from nappies, to makeup, clothing choices and food products so that I have less D’s E’s F’s in my life and more A’s! 😄 I learn something new almost every time I log on— and particularly love the new updates and extra I info that is continually added. I was so shocked to read that the baby formula I’d been giving my son for almost 9months had an F and bad particles in it. It was recommend to me by the pharmacist! I can’t wait to share with people how bad some of these products can be. I wish that some of the companies that I am into- like Australia’s Grown Alchemist- had a rating, but I understand that this takes time and man power. So please know that you really are changing life’s and helping the earth. Continual errors when trying to add new products. Feedback and error reporting doesn’t work through the app. The premise of this app is fantastic and when companies are added (because you can’t, because that’s bugged too) there is a lot of information available to guide your decision. In its current state this app should be $0.99 or free because it certainly isn’t ethical to charge so much for this app at current development. ### 1/5 — Unethical marketing *2017-06-16, version 2.4* Why have you charged again for basically the same app. Make sure you don't list your own app in the list of ethical products. Deceiving. Have stopped using on principle. It would be great if it could be focused in the USA or in California. It has helped me sort the best practice business from the not-so-best… and has helped me to decide between products that are effectively designed to do the same thing. One of the most useful things is that ownership of companies is provided, so that I can avoid the hidden ownerships of companies that seem okay on the surface. I also like being able to check if a brand is Australian, ethical, and responsible. I have recommended this to my friends and clients. It’s a simple to use but incredibly powerful to effect consumer change.
