## What is ShopFair?

ShopFair is your independent guide to ethical spending. Completely free, with no ads or subscriptions.

Type a brand and see its ethical score out of 100, who owns it, and badges like Vegan, Cruelty-Free, Fairtrade and Organic. ShopFair covers thousands of brands across more than a hundred categories, from supermarkets and fashion to banks and energy.

EVERY BRAND SCORED
Every brand gets a score out of 100. Green is strong, amber is mixed, red is weak. Each score is built from evidence across the environment, workers, tax, animal welfare and transparency, and you can read the full breakdown on every page. The database is live so new brands and score changes reach the app automatically, with no update needed.

SEE WHO OWNS IT
A lot of brands are owned by larger parent companies. ShopFair shows you who owns each brand, how the owner scores, and labels active boycott campaigns.

MATCHES YOUR VALUES
Pick your values, such as animal welfare and workers' rights, and ShopFair flags brands that match them throughout the app.

WATCHED BRANDS
Keep a list of the brands you use and ShopFair tells you when one of them changes: a score moving enough to change its rating, a certification gained or lost, or a boycott starting. Add any brand by searching for it, or import the ones your profile answers already name.

COMPARE BRANDS
Add up to three brands and see their scores and breakdowns side by side, with the best pick highlighted.

SCAN A BARCODE
Scan a barcode to be instantly taken to the brand's page. If the brand you scanned isn't covered, you can help grow the database by sending it in one tap.

SCAN A RECEIPT
Scan a receipt for a full report on every item, with smart swaps to help improve your score.

GUIDES BUILT IN
Short guides to check before you buy, bin or switch, from what recycling symbols mean to spotting greenwashing and more. You'll find them in the Browse tab, and new guides are added over time.

APPLE WATCH, WIDGETS AND SEARCH
ShopFair runs on Apple Watch, with the full database searchable from your wrist. Add widgets to your home screen and lock screen, and find brand scores right in iOS search.

FREE, PRIVATE AND INDEPENDENT
ShopFair is free forever, with no ads or subscriptions. Your profile stays on your device, and nothing is uploaded or sold. Scores are ShopFair's own independent assessment, and every page has a report button if you spot something wrong.

ACCESSIBILITY
ShopFair supports VoiceOver, larger text sizes, dark mode and reduced motion, and every score is shown as a number and a rating, never colour alone. If something does not work well for you, use Send feedback in Settings and we will fix it.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.2 — 2026-08-22

ShopFair can now watch the brands you use and tell you when one of them changes.

Watched brands has its own section in your profile, whether or not you have answered any questions.

Add a brand by searching for it, import the ones your profile answers already name, or have brands you name later join the list on their own.

Turn off any brand from the list, or turn watching off altogether in Notifications.

Nothing about watching leaves your phone. There is no sign up and no email.

Brand suggestions in the profile questionnaire now come from the live database, so every suggestion has a rating behind it and counts towards your score.

Other fixes and improvements.

### 1.1.7 — 2026-08-17

Fixed the app coming back from the background stuck, where scores showed as zero and taps did nothing until it was force-closed.

ShopFair now checks its database is intact before using it, and falls back to the copy built into the app.

Barcode scanning now reaches far more of the database, so fewer products come back empty.

Reporting a wrong barcode now fixes that barcode for everyone.

Receipt scanning handles supermarket own-label lines, and the rows say which items are own label.

Fixing a receipt scan now goes one item at a time, with a counter showing how many are left.

Tapping the search box while fixing a receipt no longer scrolls it out of view.

Tapping the Profile tab now takes you back to the profile page.

Home screen widgets are now in the ShopFair typeface.

With Reduce Motion turned on, scores now appear at their final number rather than counting up.

Improved text readability throughout the app.

Other fixes and improvements.

### 1.1.6 — 2026-08-11

Scanning a product now opens that product's own page when ShopFair have one. Fixed from just opening the brand page.

Improved live database brand pages to include more content, such as active boycotts, without app updates.

Lists now remember where you were. Opening a brand and coming back no longer loses your place.

Notifications have their own settings page, so you can turn each type on or off.

Pull down on the database changes screen to refresh it.

Every brand shown on a parent company page now opens its own page.

Improvements to how the database changes screen is presented.

New categories now show in database changes when they launch.

A brand that owns itself now says it is independent, rather than saying no owner is listed.

The Apple Watch app now shows the same certification pills as the phone, and its brand list is in sync with the full database.

Searching on the Apple Watch no longer needs punctuation typed exactly.

Brands listed on a company page on the watch now open their own page when you tap them.

Improved scanning and search, including brands with short names.

Updated the tutorial and settings to match the app as it is now.

Other fixes and improvements.

### 1.1.5 — 2026-08-03

Barcode scanning no longer slows down when a product database is slow to respond.

When you suggest a brand or send something in, you can now leave your email address and ShopFair will let you know if it makes it into the app.

The database changes screen now puts all of a brand's changes in one row, and tells you when a score moves between Weak, Mixed and Strong.

Other fixes and improvements.

### 1.1.4 — 2026-07-29

Categories now arrive without an app update, starting with Toys.

Improved search with accented characters.

Improved database changes screen.
