### 4/5 — Decent product!

*2026-08-16*

Decent product! Id love if you could add proper formatting for custom fields (it aligns top-left instead of Center-Center) and if you could add a drop-down option for custom fields too. And the dream would be to visually edit a script to mark Scenes and shots and then import that into the program.

**Developer response:** Great suggestions. Can you add them to the site we're set up for our users: shotlister.canny.io Here you can add features you'd like to see and vote on the others listed there. We build everything based on the priority set by our users.
And you may not be aware but we have partnered with Scriptation, both apps are now fully integrated, allowing the user to import scripts, navigate back and forth, and import script revisions to automatically update scene and shot data.

### 2/5 — Usefulness Ruined by Subscriptions and Accounts

*2026-02-16*

I, and I bet the majority of filmmakers out there, would gladly pay a one-time purchase price for this, and even pay a yearly/every other year upgrade price for new, useful features but this dev, like to many others making professional software, has decided that to resort to rent-seeking like Adobe, Avid, and now Apple Themselves.

And at the end of the day, even if I were okay with all that, what am I greeted with when I first open the app? Another account, another privacy policy, another Terms-of-Service. More chances to get exposed in a data breach or get sold to advertisers when the company gets bought out or decides it’s not making enough money.

You know what the advantages of pen and paper shot lists are? They don’t charge me monthly to own nothing.

**Developer response:** We understand your frustration with the subscription model and would love to offer the options you suggest. Unfortunately it has not proved sustainable - app development and maintenance require a fairly reliable source of income - as a small company of dedicated filmmakers we rely on the subscriptions to maintain the app. To help independent filmmakers we do offer free versions of both the Mac and iOS. These are pretty robust and capable of handling smaller productions and if full access to all our features is required, a one month subscription along with the two weeks free trial can provide 6 weeks of prep and production. To ease your mind on data security, we do meet the stringent security requirements of the large studios and do not share or sell our users' information. Like you we don't enjoy be overwhelmed by advertising and we'd love to see you give us a try.

### 3/5 — Could be so good, but so clunky in setting up each project

*2025-12-11, version 5.13.3*

There’s a lot of great things about Shot Lister. It lets you plan out a shooting day and spits out a pretty cool day-tracking live mode that’s pretty handy on a shoot. This app has the potential to be so fantastic.

But the headaches with using it are endless. There’s no way to import spreadsheets or csv files, (even though it’s basically a spreadsheet itself.) There’s no way to do bulk actions. Moving multiple shots around in your shooting day is sooooo tedious. And there’s NO UNDO BUTTON!?

Overall it’s an A- for the idea and a big D- for User experience

### 3/5 — Buggy

*2025-10-16, version 5.12.2*

Good! But lots of little bugs to work out

### 4/5 — Allow Final Draft to merge.

*2025-07-31*

This app is amazing and does make things a lot faster when filming. Merging the script with Scriptation app is good, however I don’t want to have to pay for another app when I already pay for another. Can you please add final draft merge like Scriptation?

### 3/5 — Almost There…

*2025-03-23*

Unfortunately the app has limits and it’s as if the developers have NEVER been on a film set or broken down a major motion picture. It’s needs more integration, and customization because it lacks in the ability for the app to be used by the professional. Being a DP there is a lot to consider in any cinema app and most are a waste of money. This may work up to a limit but there needs to be far more work out into it to be able to be a powerful tool for any filmmaker. My advice to the developers is give a free pro demo to working feature film and tv DPs and directors and get their feedback. They know what they need

### 2/5 — WOW

*2025-03-19, version 5.8.4*

I absolutely HATE that you can only make ONE episode without shot lister pro that is absolutely STUPID. You should at LEAST be able to make one full SEASON with as many episodes as you want WITHOUT SHOT LISTER PRO. You should also be able to have as many projects as you want WITHOUT SHOT LISTER PRO! (Other than that it is a pretty good app with really great quality)

### 3/5 — No monthly sub

*2025-02-06, version 5.7.2*

Kind of bonkers that you have to shell out for annual. Just for a small script. Wish there was monthly

### 2/5 — Nearly unusable

*2025-01-18*

I started using this app a few months back, I like the overall layout and features- however recently it’s been bugging out when I try to do nearly anything. I type a single line and it will exit the scene I’m working on and send me back to the main page. It does this constantly. I have updated the app to its newest version and still have this issue. I have also reached out to the support email and sent a screen recording of my issue and it’s been over a week with no response. Unfortunately on my phone this application is nearly unusable.

**Developer response:** Hi Sam - sorry to hear you didn't get our email response. Check your spam but yes please send us the recording you have of the issue, ccing zach@shotlister.com so we can be sure to receive it and resolve your issue. Thx!

### 5/5 — Great update

*2024-09-26, version 5.6.1*

The legacy version of Shot Lister was great but not the most user-friendly app I've ever used. This new version takes everything that was good about the legacy version and makes the interface so much more usable. An absolutely essential part of my filmmaking process.

### 4/5 — Keeps it simple

*2024-08-28, version 5.6.1*

If you're regularly working on productions with multiple crew members, I don't know any better system out there. I've tried collaborative Google Docs, but on shoot day, the ability to have everything running on an iPad or Mac makes the day much more efficient.

It's still missing some features including the ability to add time breaks in between shots and hotkey support, but thankfully many are still in development. Keen to see this app keep getting better!

### 5/5 — Lovely tool for Cinematographers

*2024-08-11, version 5.6.1*

It has been great for prep. Love how easy it is to organize. Also, love that they are open to making improvements and listening to their customers

### 2/5 — Good for what it is but it has issues.

*2024-03-23, version 5.4.2*

The app is good for setting up shots and planing but the app does not like to save drawings. Multiple times I’ve spent 20 tp 40 minutes drawing a scene and when I close the app it doesn’t save any of my work.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Calm down

*2025-06-12, version 5.9.3*

Don’t ask me for a review 3 minutes after installing the software

### 1/5 — :(

*2025-03-28, version 5.8.4*

I have had the app for 5 minute and review :(

Why waste time :(

### 1/5 — Almost There…

*2025-03-26*

Unfortunately the app has limits and it’s as if the developers have NEVER been on a film set or broken down a major motion picture. It’s needs more integration, and customization because it lacks in the ability for the app to be used by the professional. Editing from different drafts is impossible. Selecting multiple strips -impossible. Integrating fully with Scriptation — impossible. Fix the app bc it seems this is not ready for prime time…yet.

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback Alejandro and for adding your feature requests to shotlister.canny.io That's our go to list as we plan and build new features which we endevour do with each release. Your feedback will help keep us moving in the right direction. And our tutorial on our website for the Scriptation integration is super helpful in laying out the steps for importing script revisions and other sharing of data between our two apps.

### 1/5 — Can't access the orginal version of the app I paid for

*2025-03-18, version 5.8.4*

Can't access the orginal version of the app I paid for, now being forced to subscribe at additional cost to use it.

### 1/5 — unnecessarily complicated

*2024-11-15, version 5.7*

Painful to use.

### 1/5 — Lost everything!

*2024-07-26, version 5.6*

I drew all these storyboards which it said it was saving but it didn’t!! All that work gone!

### 1/5 — Bait and switch

*2024-07-01, version 5.6*

I am a legacy user, I was onboard from it’s inception up to present. It was a one time buy app, over the years it has not greatly improved and the feature list is somewhat lacking. The new subscription model is disgusting and price gouging. Support is terrible and the set up tried to trick legacy users into new subscribers which is morally wrong. Not at all pleased with the bait and switch tactics and customers needs lost to financial greed. I am ditching this app now. Goodbye

### 1/5 — Nicht mehr zu gebrauchen

*2024-03-14*

Bis zum letzten update alles cool. Jetzt sind alle Projekte weg, die Exporte lassen sich nicht mehr öffnen und neue Projekte auch nicht mehr erstellen.

**Developer response:** Sorry to hear you're having an issue. Can you please email zach@shotlister.com right away so we can help you. And also let us know what device and operating system you're experiencing this on.

### 1/5 — Warning – not reliable for professional use, features do not match website

*2024-01-15, version 5.0.6*

The app is amateur-ly designed and not reliable for professional use. I was unable to make sharing work with my DOP, and when I tried to export my shotlist as the website promised I would be able to, I wasn't able to, meaning hours of work were wasted. I hope that a future version with more development time works better, but currently I can not safely recommend to anyone who is trying to run a successful production.

### 1/5 — Not suitable for professional use

*2024-01-11, version 5.0.5*

Could be a great app but currently not reliable. Features available do not match the information described on the site. We have lost production time because of this.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — A must have for any DP!

*2025-08-07, version 5.11*

Have been using Shot Lister for years, probably since hearing about it on Film Riot way back, and have been through all it's ups and downs in that time. Early on when syncing was a turbulent and risky business I had to 'save as' every time I made any changes and keep double backups of all project files as well as rendering PDFs to archive. On multiple occasions I lost the project to an error and had to ask Zach and his people to help me out (in a state of panic I might add) so I could recover the work. Despite the issues it once had, I never once considered walking away from the program. It is by far the best shot listing program there is or has ever been and the support from the team behind it is unmatched. In the recent rebuild of the program, the team completely eradicated the reliability issues and addressed so many of the problems us users had pointed out. I think that's one of many reasons I stuck with it, as it's not just another venture by some big tech company. It's a genuine effort to provide important tools for filmmakers and I feel that the makers are extremely motivated to work with the community to collectively build something truly excellent.

I have used Shot Lister on features, full scale TV shows, large commercials, shorts, music videos, documentaries - the list goes on. Even trying it out as a scheduling platform for my own personal life which is working really well for me! It can be a struggle sometimes to convince crew members, such as AD's and production as well as other departments, to jump on board with it - but the moment they accept it as a workflow they totally fall in love with it.

I couldn't have done all the insanely complex and on the go / last minute shot listing I've done without this phenomenal app. I owe it a lot of gratitude and to the people behind it.

If there's one thing you can do to improve your filmmaking, it would be to implement Shot Lister in your workflow right now. It would be silly not to, in my opinion.

### 5/5 — Allow Final Draft to merge.

*2025-08-05*

This app is amazing and does make things a lot faster when filming. Merging the script with Scriptation app is good, however I don’t want to have to pay for another app when I already pay for another. Can you please add final draft merge like Scriptation?

**Developer response:** Hi and thanks for the support! If you are a Shot Lister Pro subscriber you can import a Final Draft script you just aren't able to import later versions into the same project. This process is quite complicated and is the kernel of Scriptation's coding and is what they do so well. We understand it's expensive to have two Pro subscriptions but we are able to take advantage of a new system by Apple where if you already subscribe to one of our Apps, like Shot Lister, then the second subscription is 20% off. The App Store will recognise you have a Shot Lister subscription so long as you log into the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to purchase it.

### 5/5 — Outstanding App

*2025-06-08, version 5.9.3*

Very helpful and affordable.

### 5/5 — A shot listing programs designed for filmmakers

*2025-03-18, version 5.8.4*

I am a film and commercial director and there’s no program better than Shot Lister!
The auto and crew sync features are so helpful and it’s very easy to navigate through the software.
Sharon from the support team assisted me recently with some technical issues I was experiencing and had me back on track quickly and efficiently.

### 5/5 — Amazing App!!!

*2025-03-11, version 5.8.3*

This is an absolute must for me on set.
Lifesaver! More importantly, timesaver!!

### 5/5 — With Scriptation, a must have app

*2025-02-25*

As a longtime user of both Shot Lister (all my FunnyorDie shorts) and Scriptation (both features), I was thrilled when they announced app integration. Now, each one is synced up when there are script changes, reflecting the difference in page length in each app. And when I’m doing my shot list, one simple click will take me back to the script in Scriptation to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything. A perfect, flawless integration and absolutely vital for directors.

**Developer response:** Wow, thanks for your detailed review. We're proud of the work of both teams in making this happen and for Apple for introducing contingency pricing which allows us to offer a 20% discount on the one year subscriptions when users subscribe to both apps. The integration is also a huge step forward in app development and is definitely the future for filmmaking apps.

### 5/5 — RAMON ORLANDO

*2025-02-19, version 5.7.2*

### 5/5 — Nearly unusable RESOLVED

### 5/5 — Absolutely awesome

*2024-12-22*

Now, this might not be the most complicated app for shot listing ever, but I think it has just enough. It’s simple and easy to understand. It’s also SO good for helping me organize my thoughts.
10/5 would recommend.

**Developer response:** Wow - thanks for the glowing review! Our goal is to make Shot Lister intuitive for new users so they can jump right in and see the benefits right away of creating a shot list. Once you've experienced the instantaneous syncing across your devices and with the crew then Live Mode on Shoot Day you'll never go back to paper shot lists or excel.

### 5/5 — FANTASTIC

*2024-10-03, version 5.6.1*

This is a blessing for any filmmakers, whether its small indie or big studio film... this app is a must have! Best team and stuff truly passionate about filmmaking! Very worth getting this app! Highly recommended!
