## What is ShowShark?

Your media library should be easy to enjoy—not another catalog you scroll through and abandon.

ShowShark turns the movies, TV shows, music, photos, and videos you already own into a private streaming service made for Apple devices. Browse anything on demand, get recommendations, or turn your collection into custom 24/7 channels and watch what is already playing.

ShowShark has two parts: this player app and ShowShark Server for Mac.

A large library can create a new problem: too many choices. ShowShark brings back channel surfing with your own media.

Create a channel for action movies, classic sitcoms, cartoons, science fiction, family videos, or any mix you want. ShowShark builds the schedule and a live programming guide. Open a channel and join what is playing.

Install ShowShark Server on a Mac, then add folders, external drives, and SMB or NAS shares. The Server indexes files in place and adds artwork, descriptions, cast details, genres, and other useful metadata.

Search by title, actor, artist, album, genre, year, mood, and more. Browse recent additions, continue where you stopped, rediscover old favorites, or play any item directly. Channels are an option, not a restriction.

Setting up the server was easy. My kids can watch their shows while we are away from home, and the offline download feature is great for long drives. I love not having another subscription.

Once I got the server set up, even my kids could easily find and watch their cartoons on the Apple TV. They never have to ask for help. This stands in contrast to Plex. ShowShark is worth checking out.

Cameras, a new Channels hub, subtitle files, sharing downloads, and a lot of polish.

• Watch your IP cameras. Add ONVIF or RTSP cameras on the Server and watch them live on every device.
• A new Channels tab. One card per channel type opens its own screen: video, music, photos, YouTube, podcasts, radio, cameras, and IPTV.
• Drop an .srt file next to a movie or episode and it appears in the subtitle picker, with the language read from the file name.
• Export a downloaded file as a standard MP4 in about a second, then AirDrop it, message it, or save it to Files.
• Scrub with previews everywhere. Thumbnail previews now appear while scrubbing in Original (HLS) mode and in downloaded videos, even with no connection.
• Recent searches follow you. They are stored with your profile, so every device sees the same list, and you can clear or remove entries.
• iCloud Photo channels play videos too. Mixed folders and albums play each video in full with sound, in sync for everyone watching.
• Better Original playback. Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 Blu-ray audio plays, a slow connection offers a one-tap switch to Default instead of restarting, and your mode choice is remembered.
• Network shares are faster. Videos on SMB and S3 locations start sooner, resume where you left off, and move far less data.
• Get maintenance reports and alerts through Notification Center, Pushover, ntfy, Telegram, Discord, Slack, or a webhook.

Plus fixes for the Search tab on small iPhones, sheets that opened empty on the Mac, and a long list of stability improvements. Update your ShowShark Server to get everything above.

- Podcast subscriptions are now available. Admins can find podcasts by name, add RSS feeds, and play audio or video episodes.
- Internet Radio brings live audio to Channels. Search the Radio Browser directory, save stations, and see the current track title during playback.
- Downloads now form a complete offline media library. Browse shows, movies, YouTube videos, music albums, and tracks without a Server connection.
- Offline downloads work better on slow or unstable connections. Automatic recovery preserves progress and prevents silent damage to video or audio.
- YouTube now supports live playback and offline downloads. Live broadcasts use live controls, while completed videos can join the offline library.
- External subtitles add more language choices. A configured SubDL provider can find and play subtitles with Default or Original playback.

### 2026.07.20 — 2026-07-20

- Original playback is faster, simpler, and available in more places. One Original choice now selects the best direct or remux path automatically, with faster indexed playback for compatible Matroska and WebM files.
- Original now works remotely and with AirPlay video. ShowShark can relay untouched media through remote tailnet connections and hand supported sessions to nearby AirPlay receivers from iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
- Original closes major feature gaps. Text subtitles, Skip Intro, more device-detected codecs, AV1 remuxing on capable hardware, preserved Dolby Digital audio, and extensive HDR and synchronization fixes make it a much more complete playback mode.
- YouTube and Default playback can deliver better quality. YouTube resume and scrubbing can stay in HD, while adaptive playback raises quality more confidently when the connection and playback buffer are healthy.
- Music albums now have artwork galleries. ShowShark can discover, cache, and display front and back covers, booklets, disc scans, tray art, and other images from the Cover Art Archive.
- Downloads, navigation, search, profiles, and library scanning recover more gracefully. Interrupted work resumes more reliably, tabs remain stable while data loads, and several large-library and restricted-profile gaps are fixed.

### 2026.07.01 — 2026-07-04

- Original playback is the headline feature. Supported single-file media can play in Default or Original mode. Original preserves source video characteristics such as HDR and Dolby Vision when the title, device, and connection allow it. Remux HLS supports Picture in Picture, handles Dolby Digital (AC3) audio more reliably, and explains why each playback option is or is not available.

- ShowShark Web now has HLS playback. Browser playback (which is extremely beta) can use HLS with a compatibility fallback, improving startup, controls, and long-session behavior.

- Profiles can now limit content access. Admins can protect profile switching with a passcode and restrict content by folder, rating, and media type. Restrictions apply across browsing, search, playback, downloads, recommendations, and history.

- Search, Browse, and History are easier to use. File filters can be combined, recent items use clearer date groups, and TV episode history can jump to the episode or its show.

- Live TV, YouTube, updates, and admin screens received focused reliability and polish fixes.

- Offline downloads are much more useful. Stopped downloads can now remain playable as partial downloads, resume from the saved range, show clearer remaining-time estimates, and behave more naturally in the Downloads manager.
- Original file copying is now built for large media files. On Mac, Copy Original File can preserve partial progress, resume interrupted copies, show an ETA, stream data more efficiently, and keep the downloads list synchronized with files on disk.
- Browse is easier to scan and harder to confuse. A new compact Browse layout, article-aware sorting, better server switching, preserved server nicknames, and cleaner iPhone and Apple TV navigation make large libraries feel more predictable.
- Server library work is clearer and better coordinated. Scan startup now shows immediate feedback, maintenance actions avoid running over each other, excluded folders are honored more consistently, and scrub-thumbnail failures can be inspected directly.
- Playback and thumbnail reliability improved. ShowShark is less likely to stall or crash around local playback, high-throughput streams, thumbnail generation, scrub previews, and media pipeline cleanup.
- Several media-related crash fixes.
