Know your camera's shutter count, before you buy or sell: for the Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Pentax, Leica and Ricoh models listed below. Buying a used camera? Ask the seller for a sample photo, open it in ShutterLife and read the shutter count straight from the image file, before you spend a cent. Selling? Share a PDF report with the reading of your own file. ShutterLife reads the shutter count directly from your camera's image files, no internet, no data upload, no account required. Works on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. HOW IT WORKS Import a photo straight from your photo library or the Files app on iPhone and iPad. ShutterLife reads the file and instantly shows you the shutter count. IMPORTANT: ORIGINAL PHOTO REQUIRED The photo must be in its original format. Messaging apps like WhatsApp strip the capture data (EXIF), and the count with it, when sending. Please have the photo shared via AirDrop, email (original size), or a cloud service (iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive). CAREFULLY TESTED ShutterLife was built and tested on real camera files, not on samples or simulations. ShutterLife shows the value your camera wrote into the image file. On the Canon EOS RP and R7 in HDR mode, the app adds the measured difference and marks it. Note: firmware updates or counter resets may affect the value shown. No software can guarantee that a file comes unaltered from the camera in question: if in doubt, compare the serial number in the report with the camera. Manufacturer figures are tested minimum thresholds, not failure forecasts. CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY ShutterLife can only show the shutter count if your camera writes it into the image file. These cannot be read: DSLRs from Canon and Sony (for example the EOS 5D Mark IV or the Alpha 68), smartphones (iPhone/iPad), most compact cameras, and the Leica M series. They don't store the count in the photo. Some mirrorless models from both brands are covered, the Canon EOS R6 for instance. Only the list below decides: if your model is not on it, we have not tested it. With Nikon, Pentax and Fujifilm it sometimes works anyway; with Canon and Sony, rely on the list only. COUNT AND TESTED THRESHOLD See your shutter count and, next to it, how it relates to the threshold the manufacturer tested for. That threshold is a tested minimum, not a failure forecast: above it the manufacturer simply stopped testing. The figure appears when a confirmed manufacturer rating exists and the counter really tracks actuations. Fujifilm counters track frames instead, so those models show the count without a percentage. Ich habe jetzt 81.357 Auslöser runter. Hätte mit weniger gerechnet, 🙈😂 aber gut zu wissen ab wann man zu der Grenze kommt wo man weiß es könnte jeden moment passieren das der Mechanischen Auslöser kaputt gehen kann. Hab mir vom Verkäufer vorher einfach ein Foto schicken lassen und konnte damit über ShutterLife den Auslösezähler auslesen, noch bevor ich überhaupt hingefahren bin. Wert hat gepasst, also zugeschlagen. Top Kauf. Den Stand behalte ich jetzt monatlich im Auge. Where the manufacturer states it, the condition it measured under appears right at the threshold, for example mechanical shutter or electronic first curtain. • Improved shutter count detection on Pentax and Nikon. If you use one of these cameras, read your photo once more. • Fujifilm: the app now explains more precisely what the value covers on these cameras. They count every frame rather than shutter movements, so the value is shown there as a lower bound. • The PDF report states right next to the number where it comes from: read from the image file, not verified on the camera. You can compare the serial number in the report with the camera. • When the app reports a read error, it now says before the support mail opens what will be attached and how long we keep it. • Smaller improvements and fixes. ### 1.0.8 — 2026-08-31 This update makes Canon support significantly stronger and shows more clearly what the shutter count tells you. • Shutter count and threshold: instead of a remaining lifespan, the app now shows the manufacturer's tested minimum threshold and how your count relates to it. It is a minimum figure, not a failure forecast. • Canon EOS RP: the shutter count is now found after a camera firmware update as well, measured by us on real cameras. On a firmware version we have not measured, the app shows no value and names the version instead. • Canon EOS R7: photos from HDR mode and from multiple exposures are now read. An HDR image is made from three actuations, and the app accounts for that and says so. • Tidier history: loading the same photo several times now makes one row instead of many, sorted by capture time. • If the app finds no shutter count in a photo, it names the possible reasons and tells you which photo will work. This includes Canon RAW burst files, which hold a whole series of frames. • Your camera missing from the list, or reporting a firmware version we do not know yet? Send us two photos taken directly after one another, as originals, via Support. The difference between them reveals the count. Photos sent in have already helped us solve the Canon EOS RP, and what we can measure may find its way into a future update. • Also: three new columns in the CSV export, Sony A7R IIIA and A7R IVA added to the model list, and on iPhone nothing is cut off at the bottom of the screen anymore. ### 1.0.7 — 2026-08-19 • History: hints are never cut off anymore, every row now has an info symbol • Dates are shorter and clearer: "May 8, 2020 (per camera)" • CSV export with clean columns, minimum values are marked right in the value • The review request no longer interrupts your first reading ### 1.0.6 — 2026-08-11 HEIF files are now read. If you shoot in HDR mode on Canon, Sony or Fujifilm, ShutterLife reads the shutter count from .HIF files too. History becomes your camera's timeline. Every reading now shows the capture date as recorded by the camera, because a shutter count is as old as the photo it came from. The camera card and the copyable report state the date too. A tidier History. A clearer header, honest notes for cameras without a confirmed manufacturer rating, and the CSV export explains its lower-bound column. Better with VoiceOver. The camera card speaks every line in visible order, and percentages are no longer rounded when spoken. Small fixes in the help texts, including the X100 series. ### 1.0.4 — 2026-07-31 Newly supported: Leica (Q2, Q2 Monochrom, Q3, CL, SL2, SL3, SL3-S, D-Lux 8), Ricoh GR III, plus Canon EOS RP and EOS R7. Better recognition: Nikon Z5 II and Z50 II are now correctly identified with name and shutter count. More accurate wear display: every stored rated life was checked against manufacturer sources. Where none could be confirmed, the ring now stays neutral instead of showing an estimated value. Clearer wording: the app now states more precisely which cameras it can read, and which ones never store the shutter count in the image file to begin with.
