I love how much potential this app has. For a tracker, it is very fun to use—but I find holding the 12” iPad in portrait mode while working to be a pain. If it was possible to toggle between portrait and landscape mode, then this app would be perfect. Aside from that however, I have no complaints. This app is just what I’ve been looking for to produce chiptune songs, and probably the most learner-friendly tracker I’ve come across so far. Can write some cracking tunes on it. I've since joined a demo group, got music into a demo production and had music added to the High Voltage SID Collection. The only thing that could improve this is a version that works as an Audio Unit Extension, so that I can use it as an instrument with Cubasis/GarageBand. Die Screens wirkten auf mich, als wäre die App alles andere als komplett und würde nur annähernd den Sound des C64 auf das Tablet holen. Die guten Musikprogramme auf dem C64 waren/sind meist sehr komplex und kryptisch. Man hantiert dort vorwiegend mit Zahlen, was fast schon einer Programmiersprache gleicht. So kann man erstaunlich viel aus der beschränkten Hardware heraus holen. Die App hat die gleichen Beschränkungen und ahmt den Soundchip möglichst exakt nach, auch dessen Bugs. Und so wundert es nicht, dass man seine Kompositionen auch in Dateiformate exportieren kann, die der echte C64 versteht. Die Bedienung ist für Einsteiger, aber auch für alte Hasen erst mal gewöhnungsbedürftig. Zu letzteren zähle ich mich. Den Entwicklern ist es gelungen, das alte Trackerkonzept auf das iPad zu transportieren, ohne die sperrige Bedienung zu kopieren. Vielfach gehen Sie neue Wege. So sind Wavetabellen schnell mit dem Finger eingegeben. Die grafische Aufbereitung ist gelungen, mit Zahlen muss man nicht hantieren. Filter- und Pulstabellen kommen ebenfalls ohne Zahlen aus und zeigen mit Diagrammen, was die Einstellungen bewirken. Die Touchbedienung ist großartig gelöst und lässt sich auch auf dem iPad mini gut handhaben. Spuren und ausgewählte Noten lassen sich beispielsweise per Wischgeste transponieren. Technisch ist die Player-Routine auf hohem Niveau. Über eine Effektspur steuert man Filter, Lautstärke und ändert das Tempo, um etwa Shuffle-Rhythmen zu erzeugen. Auch Multispeed-Tracks sind machbar, allerdings stört besonders dort die Beschränkung der Wavetable auf 16 Schritte. Komplexere Drums sind damit nicht zu realisieren. Wer mit GoatTracker oder CheeseCutter auf dem Mac oder PC nie warm wurde, sollte sich den SidTracker64 reinziehen. Eine absolute Empfehlung für alle, die mal wieder für den C64 Musik machen wollen. Dank Midi-Support ist die App auch für Chiptune-Musiker interessant. Die erste Version läuft bereits erstaunlich stabil und gibt eine Runde Musik-App ab. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Just Portrait Mode on iPad Pro 12.9 ?? *2020-06-23, version 1.0.5* Why just Portrait Mode - or is there any hidden Option to switch to landscape?? ### 1/5 — Nearly impossible to use on iPad Pro *2020-05-19, version 1.0.5* Because this app only supports portrait mode (WHY!?), the keyboard is contained to a tiny section at the very bottom of the display, and to make matters worse, the bottom half of each white key is unresponsive (as it conflicts with the app-switcher area on iOS). I also believe the app continues to drain power in the background, as my iPad battery went dead after two days of non-use, and this app used 100% of the battery charge in less than 48 hours. I’m guessing the app is abandoned. ### 1/5 — Why do they do this? No linear control!!? *2015-06-25, version 1* Why do some iOS music apps still have touchscreen "rotary" controls that only work in a rotary fashion...? It works so much better when you can control the "knobs" with vertical - up - down levels instead of muddling about trying to move your finger in a rotary movement! I have only a small and a big issue with it, hence the 3 stars: - it only works in portrait mode on the 12,9” iPad Pro, which makes it a bit cumbersome with the folio cover. The piano keyboard would also benefit from a landscape mode. - the bigger issue is that it constantly runs in the background, depleting the battery in 1-1.5 days when the iPad is not used. ### 3/5 — Updates missing! *2023-09-30, version 1.0.5* Good app. but not a single update in years. Doesn’t emulate 6510 Sid chip. ### 3/5 — Good but has a few flaws *2020-08-06, version 1.0.5* I wanted a way to write a tune for my C64. This looked like a good option, so I purchased it. I’ve never really got along with tracker software in the 80s and 90s, so it took me a while to get used to it. It’s quite a complex app, and there is a lot to learn. The UI misses many opportunities to make things quicker and easier, such as when moving a single note. Many of the controls are very fiddly and frustrating to use. The worst bit is that the white keys on the piano keyboard often fail to respond. We’ve tried two different iPads - a mini 2 and a mini 4. Maybe it’s an iPadOS issue with it being near the bottom of the screen, in the area where you can swipe up. Whatever the problem, it makes it hard to play reliably. I wish the keyboard could be made larger and in the middle of the screen, for the times when you’re playing live. I went to the website looking for support but there’s only a screen shot and a link back to the App Store... ### 3/5 — Crackingly good tracker. *2016-04-16, version 1.0.3* Deeper than it looks. Like Cara Delavigne with a rocket scientist mind. Brilliant workflow once you get the hang of it. One very odd thing...try setting the bpm at 100. 101 or 99bpm you can set. Anything between 45 and a massive 720 but not 100. So if you only ever work in 100 bpm then avoid. Otherwise, don't avoid. It's brilliant. ### 3/5 — No Virtual midi? *2015-06-25, version 1* Great little tracker - nice emulation. Virtual midi doesn't appear to work though and needs a clearer indication of what sound your currently editing in which track. Also needs linear knob control - currently very fiddly. Looking forward to updates :) ### 4/5 — Great app, but needs landscape display *2022-07-24, version 1.0.5* This app succeeds at providing authentic C64 sounds and also provides a streamlined creation experience. I have one major complaint: the app does not display horizontally / landscape mode on iPad Pro 12.9 inch displays. This makes composition on the touch screen impossible as you end up sliding the app window off screen or dragging the app bar or other windows over the already small piano keys. To the developer: PLEASE add landscape display as soon as possible. As a veteran synth-head, I am impressed by this as a Synthesizer, its very powerful! If you are after this kind of sound, even high end synths won't be able to emulate the SID sound- its unique. As well as chiptune stuff, this also is great for making warm, analog sounding bass and lead sounds. I don't use the tracker part of the app, I'm sure it is good, I just prefer to use the app as a sound module or sample it.
