The past several decades of research have provided conclusive evidence that competent readers are skilled in using letter-sound knowledge to work out (decode) unfamiliar words when reading. Teaching methods that begin by teaching students letter-sound relationships (synthetic phonics methods) are known to be superior to other approaches in teaching reading, regardless of whether students do or do not have reading difficulties. Decoding skills are crucial for self-teaching, as they may be used to work out regular words (words with regular sound-spelling patterns, such as ‘stop’ and ‘flight’) however they are not as useful for learning the approximately 20% of English words with irregular spellings (words such as ‘who’ and ‘said’). Research suggests that in addition to being taught to decode, students should be explicitly taught to recognise common words, especially those with irregular spellings. Learning to instantly recognise highly frequent words helps students to develop fluency in reading. This sight words app keep crashing. This happens every time we use it. ### 5/5 — Fantastic app!!! *2016-04-08, version 1.3* If you haven't got this app ... you need to get it!!! This app is a great find. I am using it with literacy intervention kids and also mainstream. It is self monitoring and self correcting!!! It has a facility to make custom list to work on for individual children or particular reading materials. there are 200 S.V. words in this app, if it was extended t 400 " most used" words it would be perfect!! Have had some success with spelling using this app. After students have used a "group" of custom words 5/6 times, and are using them in reading tasks; I have used them in dictation and the kids have been able to spell them as well - a happy surprise.......... ### 2/5 — Reading doctor sight words *2014-12-16, version 1.21* I am really disappointed as there are faults with this all. In the 4 letter words one word doesn't even load! Sometimes the program doesn't load. I have the whole bundle and love the sound packages and I use it all the time with the children I teach.
