Sign 4 Me iPad app now works with Siri Speech Recognition! Sign 4 Me is the ULTIMATE tool for learning sign language. The ONLY iPad app using a full-body avatar providing sign language instruction in 3D! Our 3D character can be zoomed in or out and rotated to give you the best vantage point for every sign. YOU control the placement of the character - not us! No other product lets you do this! The library includes more than 11,500 words. Type in sentences, phrases, words, and the alphabet. If your iPad has Apple’s Siri Speech Recognition, then Sign 4 Me will also translate your spoken words into Signed English. Everything you enter will be saved in your History. The playback is in Signed English for the hearing person who wants to learn basic sign. Our ASL team of 8 Deaf professionals created these accurate ASL signs based on their native knowledge of sign language. NOTE on Signed English VS. ASL – Sign 4 Me includes ASL hand signs in English word order. The grammars of Signed English and ASL are different. For example, “What is your name?” in Signed English uses the same signs as ASL, but in the exact word order of the English sentence. Using ASL grammar would change this to “Your name what?” If you type or speak in ASL word order, Sign 4 Me will use that word order. Dynamic translation from English to grammatically correct ASL is a complex problem including more than word order differences just as translation from any language into another would. We are currently researching mapping English grammar to ASL grammar. This product is intended for the beginning learner or anyone with an interest in learning signs. We hope to foster better communication between the hearing and the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing communities. HELPFUL TIPS - To learn how to reproduce a sign, we recommend slowing down the signing speed, zooming in and rotating the character so you can see it from different angles. This will give you a better view of the proper handshape and movement of the sign. This is especially helpful for finger spelling. If you are interested in learning the alphabet, type in ABCDE, etc. with NO space in between each letter. The character will show you what each letter sign looks like. 3D CONTROLS - Zoom in - Spread 2 fingers across screen. Zoom out - Bring 2 fingers back together. Rotate - Swipe with one finger. Pan - Use 2 fingers to grab and move character. 2D CONTROLS - Delete All - Use trashcan in History to delete all of your entries. Delete one line - Swipe across line and touch Delete button when it appears. SIRI SPEECH RECOGNITION CONTROL- Open your Sign 4 Me app. Touch the text box. Your digital keyboard will appear. This keyboard includes a microphone icon. Touch the microphone icon and speak to your iPad. There is more fingerspelling then signing the word. For as much as this app cost I expected more than just fingerspelling. ### 2/5 — Should have read reviews *2014-10-30* I saw this app at a Assistive Tech presentation. Went ahead and downloaded it, thinking it was really neat. When you actually try to use it, it has lots of glitches. I tried, "what are you doing?" It didn't like the word you. So don't expect it to translate every word for you. Extremely disappointed. I was hoping to get a little help from this app, as I work with special needs preschoolers. This was not that helpful, especially for the price. I can't stress it enough. This app could be a great app if instead of spelling out 50% of words it would actually show the sign for it. $12.99 is a lot of money to pay for something that shows you how to spell a word and not sign it.
