### 3/5 — Vids do not play

*2025-02-05, version 2.0*

Tried several selections, no videos or images.

### 4/5 — Perfect ASL Dictionary App, Just Needs a Playback Option

*2024-12-14, version 2.0*

I love this app! It’s exactly what I was looking for. This isn’t an app that teaches you ASL step-by-step but rather a dictionary-style tool where you can look up specific words. Think of it as an ASL dictionary rather than a learning platform like Duolingo. The only reason I’m giving it four stars instead of five is because of the video speed. I wish there was a playback option to slow down the videos, similar to YouTube or TikTok. Other than that, this app is absolutely amazing!

### 4/5 — A great resource!

*2024-08-19*

I’ve been using this app for years as a hearing person who wants to incorporate as many real ASL signs into our homeschool learning as I can. It’s incredibly helpful and well-organized. Unfortunately, at some point recently the video player updated in an unhelpful way. Now, to play the video, you have to touch the app, and the “play” triangle sign covers the center of the video for a few seconds. Since the sign videos are only a few seconds long, this often covers up the signers hands for the whole video. In the past, the controls for the video were at the bottom of the screen so this didn’t happen. Can the developer/ designer adjust this?

### 4/5 — Tips

*2024-08-02*

Amazing app! So many words to look up and easy to use. I wish there was a button to make the video slow down. Also, it would be really cool if on every finger there was a different color of tape to make it easier. Also some of the videos are really hard to see what fingers they are using

### 3/5 — Needs some fixing

*2024-07-14*

Help ! The view of the hands signing is blocked by the play button .The app itself is a great resource but the play button is blocking the most important visual! I appreciate that it’s free but would love for it to contain simple combinations and other gestures that the deaf community uses when signing as well.

### 4/5 — Almost good

*2024-06-17, version 1.2.1*

The app is great. I use it to look up certain words but I make sure I practice the grammar. This is not an app to learn from but more to look up a few words. You need to know the ASL grammar in order to sign more than two words. The video play button covers the signs and I don’t know which sources are right but I’ve heard smart sign is not reliable but I don’t know how to tell if I’m learning a right sign. Other than that it is a great app to learn some words from. If you really want to go in-depth and pay look at @itsada_c on Instagram for recommendations on where to learn.

### 4/5 — Please move the icons!

*2024-04-14*

Great app that I use all the time but the icons for play, back and forward is right on top of the video. Some signs are hard to see.

### 4/5 — Lots of words signs covered by play icon.

*2024-03-28*

This app has a lot of words to look up which is very helpful. I only gave it four stars because the “play, skip ahead and back” icons are right where the signs occur which make it hard to see the signs.

### 3/5 — Good, but should be rated higher.

*2023-10-28, version 1.2.1*

I was looking up one word and it came up with a slur. Overall though, it has lots of signs to learn

### 4/5 — A favorite Option

*2021-04-18*

It would be nice to save signs for later usage and studying, but this is great for rusty signers like myself

### 3/5 — Reports

*2021-03-12, version 1.2.1*

Asl of video show too fast and words various that I can’t understand it fast and words confused. It’s not clear enough

### 5/5 — Really Good

*2021-02-27, version 1.2.1*

Not bad at all.Its the best ASL app I ever used. And I thank God so much that I found this app.

### 5/5 — Various signers

*2021-01-20, version 1.2.1*

I have been an interpreter for 40 years and I love this app. The various signers help by showing us the male versus female signing (yes, it’s a real thing), and by showing regional accents.
The only problem that arises is that the English explanation doesn’t always spell out the nuances of the English meanings i.e. vanish vs. Drop out of sight.
Great work on the whole.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Not as awesome as I thought

*2020-07-17*

The app looked promising to me, but I wouldn’t completely recommend it. To whoever is reading this, the app is very disorganized. It has a dictionary, but it’s doesn’t even start with the A’s! I really want to memorize the dictionary so I could be fluent in ASL, but it was really hard when I had to search up what I wanted to know. Also the quality is not amazing… But that does not really matter. Anyway, I wouldn’t completely recommend it if you’re totally new to ASL.

### 1/5 — Class Listen Up

*2019-09-18, version 1.2.1*

Only link to other websites 😕

### 1/5 — Using My Videos Without Permission

*2018-12-13, version 1.2*

I would give this app 0 stars if I could. It is using videos without permission. 😡

### 2/5 — App is great! The ads have inappropriate content

*2026-08-11*

I love the app! I work with special needs kids and sometimes I need to look up a sign. But today I opened the app and the ad at the bottom had inappropriate content for my therapy session and I had a kid and a parent in my room! I quickly turned it off and did something else. I get bedding the ads but that was ridiculous! I think it was a temu add.

### 2/5 — Not great

*2026-01-18, version 2.0*

I don’t really like that I have to go to the search bar to search for the sign language, I just want to take lessons.

### 2/5 — Sign ASL

*2024-05-05, version 1.2.1*

That’s bug fix. Please fix it something

Thanks!

### 2/5 — Loved it before, now not so much

*2023-11-22*

This app was my go to for searching signs, but the latest update makes it virtually unusable since the video controls are now on top of the video. The play/pause is directly over the spot where the person does the sign and it’s now not visible!!!! Please fix it!

### 2/5 — What happened!

*2023-11-19*

It was the best ASL app,now when I watch the video, the play and stop is on top of the video so you can’t see the sign. also, you can’t make ithe video video zoom in or out like you were able to before. put it back how it was and I’ll give you a five star but right now I’m generous to say two.

### 2/5 — Helpful but unreliable

*2020-07-12*

I like the idea, and I appreciate that it’s free, but it’s riddled with incorrect signs, which is very unhelpful when you are starting to learn. (It can be much harder to unlearn incorrect information than to learn new correct information).

In particular I think that one of the sources they draw from called “SmartSign Dictionary” gives consistently incorrect signs (and not just a little off, but completely and weirdly wrong). If they could fix this, and make sure they only drew from reliable sources then it would be a great app.

### 2/5 — One of the signs is very wrong

*2019-06-27, version 1.2.1*

She is signing good job not good night

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Simple in the best way

*2026-01-29*

I'd mostly been using websites like Lifeprint and Handspeak as dictionaries since they're very reliable, but I was so happy to find this app because it is soooo much easier to navigate on mobile than those places. Because it's just grabbing the videos, it's also super fast to load and is such a great way to quickly pull up signs whenever I need them.

Also very pleased that the app size is so small! Love a native app!

### 5/5 — Great!

*2026-01-21, version 2.0*

What an excellent resource. Thanks very much :)

### 5/5 — Exactly what I was looking for

*2025-11-19*

A very convenient, simple app, which shows you multiple videos of people signing whatever sign you searched. This is exactly what I was looking for, as a casual learner of ASL, mostly for nursery rhymes for my baby.

### 5/5 — Improved

*2024-10-16*

Thank you for the update! I have used this app for years, but was frustrated because I couldn’t see all the video. It is so much better now. It has been very helpful in adding to my ASL vocabulary.

### 5/5 — Great app to help you learn ASL

*2024-09-18*

I down-loaded the app and started using it right away, but ran into some formatting problems and was having difficulty viewing signed examples that were presented, since the view of them was being blocked. I sent a message and Daniel responded quickly and the issue was resolved quickly.
Thanks for proving this useful tool.

### 5/5 — Great ASL APP

*2023-12-03*

The app shows many people who sign the same word. Some have different variations, which I think is good. Also, large dictionary.

### 5/5 — Very good

*2023-03-14, version 1.2.1*

I didn't have to play so i was happy. It's a pretty good app to be honest.

### 5/5 — Simple and Fluid

*2022-11-27*

No nonsense fluff, love the simple interface and it gets the job done. Variety of video reference signs for each word is super helpful to see the variations. I also like that it keeps a queue of recent words you’ve searched.

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2021-08-21, version 1.2.1*

This app is wonderful! Anytime I need to look up a sign that I don’t know I open this app and it gives immediate videos quick, clear and easy. Often giving multiple sign versions of the same word which is really helpful. Thank you so much for such a great resource!

### 5/5 — One of the best free video dictionaries

*2021-04-27*

I really appreciate that this app allows you to see multiple sources and signers for the same word. This not only assures that you are finding the right sign conceptually, but also gives you a taste of different versions and signing styles you might see.

This is my go-to app for a quick sign check!

My only complaint is that sometimes the result most directly related to your search does not end up first on the page. Additionally, occasionally the far less common definition of a word will be listed first.
