SIMPL: System for Improving and Measuring Procedural Learning makes it feasible to evaluate residents after every procedure they perform. The SIMPL app, used by residents and faculty, is designed from the ground up for efficiency and ease of use while still providing meaningful evaluation data. Each evaluation consists of 3 questions plus the option to dictate formative feedback. Aggregated evaluation data is accessible to faculty who can use it to see how much experience a resident has with any given procedure or with a group of procedures. Some room for improvement for this to be an easy sell to every surgical program in the country. Currently when a faculty completes the evaluation there is no notification to the resident. You just have to click through the evals to see if feedback was left. The verbal feedback audio player works but is clunky. It cannot be paused and does not continue if the app is closed or screen turns off. If the feedback is more than about 30 seconds and I am not paying attention the screen turns itself off and I have to restart the audio player. Also, if you start a new eval but don’t finish filling it out it saves it and sends it off to the attending. This is nice to make sure you don’t lose anything, but also has resulted in me sending a couple eval requests that I didn’t mean to send (once to the wrong attending).
