### 4/5 — No volume - not useful

*2014-01-09, version 2.1.0*

A good phonics based spelling app for all levels of learning. Particularly good for students with dyslexia, provided the sound can be heard.
This app is dependant on being able to have volume, and quiet class area.
If there is no volume, this app is not function-able.

### 4/5 — Great way to get added practice

*2013-09-01, version 2.0.0*

This is a great app for getting additional practice with spelling.

### 4/5 — Needs an option to lock lists until mastered

*2013-06-15, version 1.5.0*

Would love to be able to lock lists.. My son tries to move on when i am not over his shoulder and so i have to review his lists constantly to see if he skipped. A simple lock until all words mastered option would be a godsend, allowing the child to progress further ONLY when they master all the words.

### 4/5 — Good learning app

*2013-01-13, version 1.5.0*

I got this for my son who absolutely hates doing homework. I thought that learning on the IPad would be much more engaging for him. I did find that to be the case with this app. He took to it very quickly and has come back a few times already to keep practicing. There is a good amount of material available in the free version and plan to buy the full version when he completes the free version

### 4/5 — Nice app!

*2012-12-18, version 1.5.0*

My children enjoyed the app. It has increased their desire for spelling.

### 4/5 — Spell

*2012-11-19, version 1.5.0*

My son loves it very much it helps with his spelling.

### 4/5 — Kalice

*2012-10-30, version 1.5.0*

Please add an option to create your own lists. This would be helpful to use with school homework. Overall, a great app to help children understand some basic spelling rules.

### 4/5 — Spell

*2012-09-24, version 1.5.0*

This is very American but my dyslexic daughter enjoys it never the less. She feels it has helped her with her spellings at school. She would rate it 4.5 out 5.

### 5/5 — Wow!!

*2012-08-26, version 1.5.0*

This is an amazing app!! I am an educator for 5-7 year olds and simplex spelling free lite with reverse phonics is undoubtedly the best phonics app I incorporated into my teaching and learning program!!! The best part it that the students can hear the sound and look at the different graphemes they can choose from. Very impressive!!

### 5/5 — Spell

*2012-08-16, version 1.5.0*

Great app. Keeps kids motivated.

### 5/5 — Shows All the Spelling Combinations for a Given Sound

*2012-07-26, version 1.5.0*

The words chosen for the sample lists seemed haphazard until I looked at the full version. In the full version, they are organized by spelling pattern, which makes more sense.

My 6 year old enjoys this game. He is homeschooled and we just started working on spelling, after getting him reading well enough to read chapter books. He likes being able to use the hint button, which shows him all the different ways to spell a certain sound. When he gets a word right without any mistakes or using a hint, it is added to his "mastered words" list. Each day, I have him practice the "missed words" from his list, so he spends his time working on words he needs help with, instead of having to redo the easy ones over and over.

I just bought the full version and can't wait for him to use it.

### 5/5 — Outstanding

*2012-07-07, version 1.5.0*

I tried out several free spelling/ phonics apps and this one stands head and shoulders above the rest. I've seen results in my 9 year old son already, and we've gone on to buy the full version.

### 5/5 — Teaches, not just tests!

*2012-06-22, version 1.5.0*

Great app that teaches spelling, it's not just glorified flash cards or spelling tests.

### 5/5 — App

*2012-06-06, version 1.5.0*

This help me and brother spell better

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Nothing other than advertisement for paid version

*2015-02-18, version 2.5.1*

After initial math problem is solved it takes you to a screen to buy a full version...

### 1/5 — Not cool

*2013-07-08, version 1.5.0*

My kid hates it she lives A+ spelling more

### 1/5 — UK English - not really!

*2012-02-20, version 1.4.1*

Whilst the blurb claims it supports UK spelling, unfortunately it is only the spelling it supports, all the pronunciation and instructions is decidedly American. Which makes it somewhat useless this side of the pond! I support I should be glad I didn't pay for the full version without double checking the lite version first.

### 1/5 — Simplex spelling free

*2012-01-25, version 1.4.1*

I downloaded the lite version before buying the paid version and I am glad I did. This app presents spelling words randomly and certainly not in accordance with how research shows how spelling should be taught. And, there is nothing to keep students interested.

### 2/5 — Can't customize

*2011-11-13, version 1.3.1*

This app is very attractive and I like the way it explains the phonics rules, but I am deleting it. It is useless to us because I can not put my 6 year old's actual assigned spelling words in it. I checked the version for $6.99 and it can not be customized either. Useless but cute.

### 3/5 — Sequence of sounds

*2020-12-12, version 2.9.4*

Overall the structure is really good. However, my concern is about the wordlists - they contain some very advanced phonemes that a beginning reader would not have been taught. The other aspect that does not work is that when a diagraph is used it is split into the individual letters, for example /ai/ is presented as /a/ and /i/. I would also like to be able to create my own word list. For these reasons I would not use this app, but I will watch the development of it as I can see it has great potential.
Thank-you for the opportunity to provide feedback. I’m always on the look-out for good apps.
Take care
Jo

### 3/5 — Graphemes misalignment with phonemes

*2015-06-14, version 2.5.1*

Most of the features on this app are great. Unfortunately not all of the consonant digraphs match the 'sounding out' on the app. For example in the word "press" each letter is sounded out ie: p-r-e-s-s instead of each phoneme ie: p-r-e-ss. The other feature I would love to see, is the option of being able to include my own words. Would also like a sound option as the letters are chosen.

### 3/5 — Solid but changes needed

*2012-11-21, version 1.5.0*

Could use a practice and learn section like build a word express in addition to what feels mostly like a test.

### 3/5 — Ok

*2012-11-04, version 1.5.0*

This app is ok! Nothing special

### 3/5 — Simplex spelling

*2012-05-23, version 1.4.1*

I think it's really helping me

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great

*2024-06-20, version 2.9.4*

### 5/5 — Daughter loves it!

*2014-03-05, version 2.1.0*

My 5 year old sits, totally engaged with this app, for 10-15 minutes. I like that it reinforces her phonemic awareness and reading skills. Great app!

### 5/5 — Great Spelling App

*2014-02-03, version 2.1.0*

I love this app. My kids enjoy doing all four levels every day and when they master all the words without the mistakes I plan on purchasing the next level. I also like that when they make a mistake they can click on the hint button and see all the phonograms that make that sound. At the end of the level it will show them a list of words that they missed and give them the opportunity to go through their missed words until they get them correct.

### 5/5 — Good application !!

*2013-04-27, version 1.5.0*

This application gives a facility to break the word into associated phonic letters. Also helps to apply the phonic rules by prompting the required phonic letters in a dropdown list. The voice is very crispy, which keeps kids very attentive.

### 5/5 — Best app

*2013-04-16, version 1.5.0*

Good app. Can be made more interesting with illustrations.

### 5/5 — 100 Stars!!!

*2013-02-09, version 1.5.0*

Both my kids love it!!

### 5/5 — Autism

*2013-01-23, version 1.5.0*

My daughter has autism and she uses the simplex spelling n
And is doing great it allows her a break from pencil paper work.
The reinforcement is great. We love it!

### 5/5 — High Quality

*2013-01-04, version 1.5.0*

As a professor of literacy, veteran elementary teacher, and mother of a third grader, I give this app a very high rating. The speech to sound match is excellent which is crucial for learning spelling skills. The support for the learner is well done and follows effective teaching and learning practices, scaffolding support in ways that encourage further learning and reasoning from the student. The app also is straightforward and easy to use for students. Unlike many educational apps, this one is extremely focused on the learning and doesn't have excess fluff that results in limited time spent learning and too much time spent playing around. If students spent 5-10 minutes a day with this app, I am convinced their phonics skills would improve, which is what my daughter will now be doing! :)

### 5/5 — Great game!

*2012-10-20, version 1.5.0*

This is a great game...I just wish they had the option to make sentences with the words...and had more words list....need to have great and grade levels k -12

### 5/5 — Excellent for understanding phoneme/spelling connection

*2012-08-30, version 1.5.0*

This high-quality interface with clear understandable voice gives students a choice of phonemes to insert into spelling words. I'm Orton-Gillingham trained and this is a must for all reading teachers.
