### 4/5 — Would get 5 stars if it had British voice too!

*2012-06-22*

I got this, because my daughter tries to spell phonetically but gets the phonics wrong. We use UK spelling in NZ so was happy with that option but was dismayed to hear the voice with a strong Canadian (?) accent with very different vowel sounds (about sounds like "aboot to us". It'll be interesting to see how my daughter adapts!

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback!

In one of our updates to Simplex Spelling Phonics 1, we did add full British voice support.
We hope you like it.

All the best,
Craig.

### 4/5 — Great app for phonemic awareness

*2012-06-05*

Great phonemic awareness app. I come from a grad program that lays a huge emphasis on literacy and the scope of a SLP in that area and this is definitely one of my top recommendations to my fellow classmates and clinic supervisors. Ability to customize nd multiusers would be great. i know other apps out there have thse abilitites :) if i wasnt comparing it would be a 5!

### 5/5 — Well worth it!!!

*2012-06-03*

This is a wonderful app for someone just learning to spell. I can already see my beginning speller (five-year-old) improving by leaps and bounds after just a handful of lessons. I can't wait to see what she can do after going through the whole program. It really is a tremendous amount of content for a relatively low price.

### 4/5 — Spelling

*2012-06-01, version 1.3.0*

This is grate for my children's and good tool for help them to spell..!

Thank for this app..!

### 4/5 — Intricate Detail!

*2012-06-01*

This is a great application with intricate detail. There are multiple facets that are provided to maximize the success rate. Data collection is a possibility; however, it does not track by date or number of words. Encouraging terms are used throughout for added motivation. Only one user can be selected at a time, so the possibility of group play is eliminated. There is a "lesson" provided and hints allowed. I would recommend this app!

### 4/5 — great tool for spelling phonics!

*2012-05-27*

This is a great app to work on basic spelling for beginners or kids who struggle with spelling rules. The app is simple to use and set up. You can create users and track their progress throughout the app. There are 42 spelling lists targetting rules of English spelling (phonics). If they added the ability to add your own spelling list, this app would be perfect!

### 5/5 — Excellent spelling app

*2012-05-26*

This is a great and excellent spelling apps. The narrator's voice is very clear and easy to understand. The words variation are great and it will keep the kids busy for a while. You can easily keep track of results and see what words you need to review or concentrate on. Highly recommended.

### 5/5 — great app

*2012-05-25*

It is very educational with great style.I strongly recommend this app to everyone who wants to learn words through the phonics method . It would be more than 5 star if developer could add an exam for each part without HINTS . so parents can really evaluate the learning process.

**Developer response:** Thanks sam maz for the feedback.
We added two new modes to Simplex Spelling.
1. An assessment mode without hints, to gauge which list a student should start on.
2. Section reviews, which allow students to try to spell words in the section they just completed without any hints. I believe the new review sections should meet your needs.

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2012-05-25, version 1.3.0*

This is a great app! I use it with my 10yo son with Autism and he is doing really well.

### 5/5 — Motivating and intuitive!

*2012-05-10*

I work overseas in an International school. This app has helped my ESL students as well as my students that struggle with dyslexia. Using the app is like working one on one with a native speaker. It enables the kids to work independently and they really enjoy seeing their progress and tapping on the success messages. It makes spelling multisensory; using the auditory, visual and kinesthetic learning channels which really helps kids remember the spelling rules.

I love how the app has spelling lists organized by phonetic sounds and rules. I was so excited when I saw a list for the "floss rule"! At a glance, it shows you where each student is struggling and what they have mastered. This app is a must have for teachers or parents working with struggling readers.

### 5/5 — A must have!!!

*2012-05-07*

This again is hands down one of the best spelling apps for learning phonemic awareness that's have ever used with my students. I work with students with Autism and this has helped bring their sight words up to near grade level. They love to work and spell out their words. They are happy to use the program, they never feel of it as hard work and ask for it by name. I would recommend this app to everyone! I love that it goes through all the different phonetic sounds and allows for students to learn by sounding words out.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Needs attention by developers

*2022-02-22*

If you type a letter in incorrectly, but then immediately correct it and type the word correctly and it checks it, it says great or flawless, but then at the end marks it as a missed word even though it was spelled correctly. The child has to be hyper vigilant to never accidentally hit the wrong letter and be perfect even though they know the word. This is not an app I would recommend for children with dyslexia as they sometimes don’t catch the letters they turn around until they type them and need to correct them. Either developers need to change it so the submitted spelled word is evaluated only or this is not a good app and will promote confusion and frustration because the child did in fact spell it correctly but it wasn’t counted.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your response and feedback!

Simplex Spelling does present students instant feedback when typing. The benefit of the instant feedback is that the student knows instantly when he or she makes a mistake. However, if you believe the end of list scoring may discourage one of your students, the scoring can be easily turned off on the lesson box at the beginning of each lesson.

Simplex Spelling does provide the exact type of approach you recommend in the review and assessment lists. Since those modes turn off the letter by letter feedback and use a submission approach instead. The approach in the review and assessment lists gives the student the ability to correct typos before submitting words and provides a more accurate indication of their mastered level.

We're sorry to hear that you've decided not to recommend Simplex Spelling for children with dyslexia. As a research study has validated Simplex Spelling as being highly effective in a classroom setting for students with learning disabilities. We've also received feedback from many educators relating how well they've found our apps have worked for their students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. A number of improvements have been added to our apps, based specifically on feedback from educators working with students with special needs. We’ve taken great care with the details, right down to the custom font our app uses that provides visual differences between often confused letters.

We’re sorry to hear that you don't feel that Simplex Spelling will meet your needs. We’d recommend still trying it with your students. Hopefully you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Wishing you all the best.
Craig.

### 1/5 — Not interactive enough

*2013-02-11, version 1.5.1*

Not worth the money. I will definitely only pay for apps by preview from now on. If this was free, it would still just be slightly decent. As a certified elementary teacher, I am disappointed with this product.

### 1/5 — Brutal

*2012-12-10*

Bought this for my daughter and we can't create a user to start the app. Don't waste your money.

**Developer response:** On the home page, there is a button in the top left corner of the screen, with a down arrow on it. If you click on this button, a navigation bar will appear that contains a number of buttons. The button with an icon of a person on it takes you to the user account page. On the user account page, you can create additional accounts, switch accounts, as well as edit or delete accounts.

### 1/5 — Not what I expected

*2012-03-14*

This looks great for kids, but I wanted to use it to help me spell a word when I needed.

### 2/5 — Disappointing

*2012-03-23*

I was expecting more words, getting greater in complexity as it said it was for all ages.

### 2/5 — Bored my kids in 3 minutes

*2011-12-20, version 1.1.0*

What can you say. My boys are excited to play or watch anything. (They are TV and game deprived.) Even with that this game managed to capture their interest for 3 minutes tops...can I get my money back?

### 3/5 — Working odd

*2017-02-07*

My son just finished and he got Flawless on 13 words but when we finished it said he missed a whole bunch of words. So what is it, that really messes with him. So frustrating.

### 3/5 — Great app - could be even better if . .

*2012-09-27*

Love your app. My kids love practicing their spelling. Any chance you could set it up so we could use our bluetooth keyboard to enter the spelling words? Also, would love a greater variety of spelling words in each group. Other wise great!

### 4/5 — Great basic spelling program

*2013-07-25*

I purchased this program with an open mind, however it has surprised me! The methods and approach is great! It's easy to use and great at referring back to the rules for sounds. I would suggest it to anyone! The level 2 one has a few features that should be carried over like making scores visible! I would like to see a report after each word list! Showing which ones were missed and all would be great! That way we could leave it to the kid to go about it, and know weather he's actually doing it correct! Overall it's amazing! It's competent worth the money and gets the kids interested! Would love to see some improvements, however it's not bad at all! 5 stars if it has a little more features for the kids, like sounding out the word with them, and if it has a report after each list!

### 4/5 — Excellent app...just a few wishes.

*2013-01-24*

This is app is based on very sound theory and works well as a supplement to my literacy curriculum. In fact, I am considering using these lists as my spelling lists for next year. I love the fact that it teaches students just as i would if i could just sit next to them all the time. However, there are a few tweaks I'd like to see. First, I'd like there to be an option for the app to force students to master one list before going on to the next. Monitoring this while teaching other small groups is challenging. Second, I'd like to see the app open to each student's current list rather than defaulting back to the intro list. Third, I'd like to see the student names be a bit larger/more obvious while in the lessons. Several times I've had a student master a spelling list...on someone else's account.

### 5/5 — My daughter can spell now

*2020-08-10*

We did the first program and it’s amazing. Wondering if it’s good?We give it the five star check out. Get it if your kid has trouble spelling.

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2020-01-22*

This app has helped me with spelling many words I didn’t even know how to spell. When I finished the last quiz I was sad and I now have to move on to phonics 2.

-Camryn a 4th grader.

### 5/5 — Wonderful!

*2019-04-08*

This is amazing

### 5/5 — Wonderful!

*2017-01-09*

We stopped using our phonics-based spelling program and continued with this. My 2nd grader went from not spelling much to typing stories in pages after a few months. We plan to continue with all the levels. We love this app!

### 5/5 — Great little app

*2014-03-04, version 2.0.2*

Good little App, my daughter has learning difficulties and the clear pronunciation and help is excellent for her

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2013-12-02*

My second grader needs help with spelling and this program is helping him. It catches him as he is making an error and he is able to think about it again and correct himself. The app keeps track of the words he has missed; it allows the parent to go back and look at the words he has mastered and the words he is still struggling with. I like the systematic phonics instruction which helps him understand the rules of spelling. I can't say enough about this app. I am teaching my son using other phonics books and internet program but I'm finding this one to be the best.

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2013-04-10, version 1.5.1*

This app is so awesom

### 5/5 — Simplex spelling phonics

*2013-01-26*

It is an awesome program. The word list is great. The only thang I could see that might be an improvement is for you to be Able to put words in to a sentence by the right spelling. I really recommend this to any age even adults it is very helpful..Thanks

### 5/5 — Glad to have this!

*2012-12-18*

I have all the Simplex Phonics apps and think they are a great resource for any learner, but also learners with special needs. The way of breaking down components of a word with color coding etc. is very useful, as well as the clear audio for auditory feedback too. This is not a "game" as one reviewer was disappointed to find out- it is a tool. There are other spelling games that may be helpful but this tool helps the child learn the rules first, then you can reinforce through other methods.

### 5/5 — Finally - a literacy app that can be used in the classroom!

*2012-08-29*

I am excited! This app was more than I expected it to be. The in-built audio provides help and assistance verbally. Combined with jiggling visual hints - learners will not have to keep asking for you help to understand what they have to do. They can feel more independent and be more on-task. As a teacher, the ability to add extra users, and customise and track them is ideal. Equally appealing is the ability to use upper-case or lower-case letters and change the keyboard layout. This is exactly the type of app that should be used in the classroom to support everyday literacy learning. Thank you :)
