Really good, not too bad I’d say you need a little more expression other than that really good .

### 4/5 — Fantastic App/Married to a Sri Lankan

*2019-07-03*

My husband wickedly never wanted me to learn Sinhala, and also showed no effort to teach our baby. He was unpleasantly surprised one day when he heard me accurately pronouncing the words to teach our daughter and by how many words I learned so fast.

The app by default, starts off with words I typically use most when meeting people who are native to this language (which I find useful.) It just seems like a great place to start.

Second, the best features are the speed adjustments you can make, in the speed of the voice, and when testing your knowledge - the speed of the next card to appear, you can make them slow, fast or whatever you like.

There’s also an option of how many words you want to set it to teach you everyday. This feature is displayed nicely at a screen which is easily accessible to adjust.

The price is also not so bad for the full version.

My advice for the developer is to put the settings button on each screen because it makes go too many screens back to get to it.

Second, please put the Sinhala alphabet, or else there’s no way to make sense of the words you have there in Sinhala letters.

### 4/5 — Helpful

*2018-10-02*

Good for a complete beginner as a starting tool

### 5/5 — Great app

*2017-05-08, version 5.3.3*

I downloaded this app because my family and I are going to Sri Lanka later this year, and I wanted to get a head start on the language. I'm still learning basics, but I think it's a great app. It really keeps me motivated and the reminders help me to remember to do a bit everyday. I haven't upgraded to the full version yet, but will definitely consider it if I get on well with the free version. Fully recommended.

### 5/5 — Fantastic

*2016-10-23, version 5.3.3*

A fantastic app to get you started speaking Sinhala. It also shows the Sinhala script if you want to practice reading and writing. The audio recordings are extremely helpful!

### 5/5 — Very great learning app!

*2016-07-08*

I am Sri Lankan and American and this helps me learn how to speak Sinhala better and I can finally speak to and understand my family and friends. Very good app. I bought the $9.99 full version and its its worth it! You should get it too!

### 5/5 — Not for learning to read

*2016-06-30*

Because the individual alphabet is not taught, it is probably not the best way to learn to read and write Sinhala. However, it's a great app for learning to converse; much better than any other Sinhala resource I have found. The paid version ($9.99) is something I will purchase.

### 5/5 — Great help

*2016-06-15*

Really awesome help with my Sinhalese. Can't wait to try it out in Sri Lanka! Stūtiyi!

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2015-12-31*

Really helps me learn Sinhala words. I just wish there was an option to learn Sinhala letters individually.

### 5/5 — Very Helpful!

*2015-10-29*

Great app with multiple different ways to practice my skills. Very helpful!

### 5/5 — Very Useful App

*2015-05-17, version 5.0.2*

I needed to learn Sinhala and there are not a great deal of resources. But this app is great - I've learnt a lot very easily - and I've been told my pronounciation is good - using the apps audio.

### 4/5 — Great App

*2015-05-12*

Simple, great app. Very helpful when travelling and when learning a new language.

### 5/5 — Love this!

*2015-05-09*

Really helps with the basics and makes it fun too. No problems with the app. Always works perfectly. I would recommend it.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Shame

*2021-06-09, version 5.8.0*

Great at first but realised it doesn’t work for the words after the basic ones. All of the words translated are wrong

### 1/5 — Incorrect translations

*2019-10-26*

We have shown this to Sinhala speaking friends and they laughed at the words used. Some are way too formal and never used.

### 1/5 — Dodgy app

*2017-06-24, version 5.3.3*

You pay for the full version and never receive it. If I can give zero rating, that's what I'll give. Be careful, dodgy app stealing your money!

### 1/5 — Update

*2013-11-14, version 3.2.5*

Personally I don't like this new update as I'm missing information and words - mainly from the index, which is no longer a list if words but sentences - how can I get this info back?

### 3/5 — Buggy (I think)

*2023-06-25*

I love this app however it’s a bit buggy

1. After downloading the upgrade I am now getting the wrong translation.

Fix: reboot

2. Voice record stop playback feature after a few uses.

Fix: TBD

### 3/5 — Review

*2021-06-12, version 5.8.0*

There are some words that aren’t accurate but considering it’s free it’s pretty good.

### 3/5 — It doesn’t have all the words

*2019-06-23*

I tried looking for all the I need to converse bc I’m trying to learn Sinhala as Sri Lankan who doesn’t know it living in Australia

### 3/5 — Good app

*2015-05-02*

Good introduction to Sinhala language.
The practice session is very useful

### 3/5 — Nice app

*2013-09-23*

This is a nice app, but it would be nicer if it had more structure with the teaching. So we learn step by step, as students would learning this normally in class. Also the full version is too expensive. If there were more features i would consider it, but at this stage, its a no for me until i see improvements.

### 4/5 — Good app, pair with Sinhala alphabet app if you want to read/write

*2026-03-26*

It’s a good app, as a second gen. Sri Lankan trying to improve my speaking, it’s very helpful. I understood Sinhala before when spoken however couldn’t speak it myself nor read or write. This app helped me learn a bit more about sentence structure and proper pronunciation as opposed to layman grammar and terms, such as oya vs oba (informal “you” vs formal “you”). I needed to download a separate app for the characters however, I used “WriteSinhalaAlphabet” to learn the individual characters and sounds. When both apps are paired together, I was able to get better at reading Sinhala as well, slowly picking up writing now as well.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Helpful!

*2025-04-12*

I have had the app for years and only study whenever I am on my way to Sri Lanka. On my last trip, people were saying how much I improved. My wife is Sri Lankan, but she says it’s too hard to pull me along teaching me Sinhala. Thanks to this app I am able to feel less like a foreigner when I’m there.

### 5/5 — Very good app

*2024-03-20*

It helps me a lot with memorizing

### 5/5 — Really helpful

*2023-07-20, version 5.8.0*

I downloaded this 3 days ago but have found it really useful for capturing good pronunciation and rhythm.

### 5/5 — Love this app!

*2020-11-12, version 5.8.0*

Works perfectly. The words are sticking and I’m hooked. Hard to find a good tool to learn Sinhala, this one is great.

### 5/5 — Brilliant

*2019-12-31, version 5.8.0*

I rarely review apps but this one is just so great.

Nothing fancy, but just really effective. The main mode is basically a type of flash card memorisation game, introducing new cards only after you’ve repeated the previous ones many times, and it really has worked for me.

I have an upcoming holiday to Sri Lanka and even with just what’s included in the free version i think I’ll be well equipped, as the phrases included are the ones I can imagine needing the most. Great!

### 5/5 — Love

*2019-07-05*

Love this app. Need more words! Possibly songs? Movies ..

### 5/5 — Would recommend

*2018-11-13, version 5.7.1*

Really nice app, can go at your own pace and just all round good

### 5/5 — Impressive

*2018-04-01*

Beautifully designed with excellent spaced repetition learning. Highly recommend.

### 5/5 — Fantastic for beginners

*2017-12-13, version 5.5.0*

I know a bit of basic Sinhala and have been trying to find an online resource to help me practice and improve. I tried a few apps but this one was by far the best! Simple, easy, and you can open a pack of new words every day. You can do slideshows to listen in the background or record yourself saying the words to check and also playing the words slowly. If you’re learning to read in Sinhala I think it would be a useful way to practice too because it uses Sinhala script as well as English (I’m not that far yet!) I would definitely recommend.

### 5/5 — Good

*2017-06-22*

I like how it repeats over and over and over as much as u like because this is a hard language for me. I also like the hands free and that you can see it written in English and Sinhala. I also like that it will still play even if you aren't in the app itself you can close the app and check email or something and it will still play!
