## What is Skein?

Turn one sample size into a complete, graded knitting pattern.

Skein is grading software for knitwear designers who need their numbers to be right — not just fast.

Enter your gauge and finished measurements once. Skein computes exact stitch and row counts across 9 sizes (XS–5XL), writes the shaping instructions to match, and draws a live schematic from the counts it just calculated.

FOUR CONSTRUCTIONS
Raglan, circular yoke, set-in sleeve, and drop shoulder — each with its own real shaping logic, built from published industry method. Set-in sleeves include an armscye check: Skein compares the cap edge to the armhole it eases into and reports the ease honestly, which is the part of set-in design that most often goes wrong.

EVERY COUNT VERIFIED
The rule Skein is built on: every printed count must be a count the knitter actually has. Table, split, and instructions are asserted to agree for every size, on every launch — 370+ checks across the engine.

A REAL SCHEMATIC, ON PAGE ONE
Export your pattern from the Designer Workspace and its measurement diagram is already there — drawn to scale from the same stitch counts as the instructions, lettered and keyed the way published patterns are ("34 (38, 42…)″"). No screenshotting the calculator, no redrawing it by hand.

A FREE PATTERN TO START WITH
The Chestnut Raglan, an original relaxed top-down pullover in nine sizes, is built into the app. Free, no email required.

YOUR OWN PATTERN LIBRARY
Add the patterns you've bought — attach the PDF, add your notes and sections, and keep everything in one place.

WHILE YOU KNIT
Your row count pins to the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island, so you can glance without unlocking. Add a price per skein and every size shows an estimated yarn cost beside its yardage.

STITCH PATTERN REPEATS
Enter your motif repeat and every size holds whole repeats — cables and lace land cleanly in all nine sizes, with any deviation reported.

ALSO INCLUDED, FREE
Project tracker with row counter · Yarn stash · Gauge & needle tool (Craft Yarn Council standard) · Abbreviations & symbols reference

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4 — 2026-09-03

A warmer Skein, and a free sweater to start with.

- A new look: warm cream, espresso, and chestnut throughout.
- The Chestnut Raglan, an original relaxed top-down pullover in nine sizes (XS to 5XL), is now built into the Patterns tab, free.
- Add your own patterns: attach the PDF you bought, add notes and sections, and keep it in your library.
- Row counter on your Lock Screen: open a project's tracker and its row count stays pinned to the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island, so you can glance without unlocking.
- See what the yarn will cost: add a price per skein and every size shows an estimated cost next to its yardage.
- Your exported pattern now opens with a real schematic on page one, drawn to scale from the graded numbers — not a screenshot you have to add yourself.
- On iPad, the grading calculator and workspace now fill the screen instead of floating in a small card.
- Start a project straight from Home, delete yarns from your stash, and a handful of dead ends removed.
- Accessibility: text everywhere now follows your Dynamic Type size, VoiceOver reads each card and instruction as one clear line, Increase Contrast is respected, and Reduce Motion turns off the confetti.

### 1.3 — 2026-09-02

Skein 1.3 writes your stitch patterns into the pattern.

• Lace & cable charts — pick a motif and Skein renders the chart,
writes the row-by-row instructions (flat or in the round, matched
to your construction), and snaps every size to whole repeats.
Feather & Fan, 2/2 rope cable, seed stitch, and 1×1 rib to start.

• Charts that grade — the motif's repeat drives the size run, so
cables and lace land cleanly in all nine sizes. No other knitting
  app does this.

• Every chart is verified like everything else in Skein: stitch
counts checked row by row, and a chart that doesn't knit is
refused with a reason — never printed.

### 1.2 — 2026-08-28

Skein 1.2 adds the construction designers said was hardest to get right.

• Set-in sleeves — the third construction, built the way pattern
designers actually shape an armhole: bottom-up in pieces, with a
built-in check that the sleeve cap truly fits the armhole it sews
into (not just that the stitch counts add up).

• Drop shoulder — the simplest, most classic construction, with the
  same fit-checking honesty as set-in.

• Every size, every construction now estimates yardage — weigh a
swatch and enter your ball band for an accurate number, or let
  Skein estimate from gauge alone.

• Skein now runs full-screen on iPad.

• New: an analytics opt-out in Settings, and a sharper app icon.

As always: every stitch count Skein prints is verified to match the
instructions it writes — no silent rounding, no stranded stitches.

### 1.1 — 2026-08-18

Circular yoke construction
Skein now grades circular yoke sweaters alongside raglan, with round-by-round increase instructions written out in full — the same verified math behind both.

Sizes now run XS–5XL
Nine sizes instead of seven, so your patterns reach more of the people who want to knit them.

Live schematic
Watch your garment take shape as you type. Every measurement on the diagram comes from the stitch counts your instructions actually produce.

Stitch pattern repeats
Enter your motif repeat and every size holds whole repeats, so cables and lace land cleanly. Skein tells you exactly how far that moves the finished measurement.

Multiple patterns at once
The Designer Workspace now holds as many pattern drafts as you like. Your existing draft carries over automatically.

Grade a size for free
Try the full grading calculator on one size — real instructions, real schematic — before deciding on Designer Pro.

Also in this release
- Fixed a crash when copying a grading table into a pattern
- Corrected the needle chart against Craft Yarn Council standards, and added 11 missing sizes including 7mm and 7.5mm
- Fixed a gauge error when switching between inches and centimetres
- A new app icon and a refreshed look throughout
