Except? *2021-01-16, version 6.8.0* This app is great except that every time I go to use it, if I haven’t used it for a week the app won’t open and I have to delete it and download again. I then must re-enter all my scope data. What a hassle huh? A real short coming for such a well thought out app. Still, it beats using the controller that came with my scope, especially in the field and, in cold weather. If not for that I would give 5 stars, maybe they’ll fix it. Addendum, it appears I may be mistaken about having to reload my equipment data. I know I had to the first time I deleted the app but in subsequent deletes I discovered that my equipment data and observer lists were still there. They must store that elsewhere on the smart phone. That being the case I’m changing my rating to 5 stars despite the glitch. To the developer, you requested specific information but provided a link to your support community without any way to reach you. It’s version 6.7.6.2 , when I touch the icon to open the app the opening page displays momentarily then quits and returns to my phones Home Screen. That’s all I can tell you. I recently bought a 10’’ SCT with GoTo. I was so looking forward to controlling the scope with my iPhone and iPad. But, I cannot get the two to cooperate. After a few hours of trying and retrying and researching, it looks like my scope is just not responding and the application is not expecting that. Who would? I would appreciate a refund. I’ll keep the other app I bought, the one without the scope control. I want to display solar system distances in miles, but cannot figure out how to do this. Object Info shows distances in km and light time units (usually seconds or minutes). How do I see miles? Many people on Cloudy Nights are asking about this, too. You need to have an email or contact chat where we can ask questions like this. Thanks in advance for your help. ### 5/5 — It could be way better. *2020-12-10, version 6.7.6* I have a few suggestions: 1. Can you add ability to tag up to three items. So their position can be tracked relative to each other over time? More like a group select feature. 2. An option to select specific satellites to track would also be great rather than having the thousands available displayed at once making the app useless and impossible to view. 3. Must have feature: When in AR Mode, can a manual or machine learning AI based “correction” be applied by identifying the position of the sun or moon and making appropriate position and view correction and keeping the correction locked in even after the AR mode is existed. I think this is critical for accurate positioning and data and act as a secondary calibration method. This will also allow for a fix when the on-device compass goes out of wack and will allow manual compass adjustments. ### 4/5 — SkySafari has always been a great app! *2020-12-09, version 6.7.6* 09 Dec 2020 SkySafari has always been a great app for observational use as well as communicating upcoming events. I use it for myself as well as for others as a pointer for where to look for the events like yhis year’s closest conjunction between Saturn and Jupiter in 800 years. Along with this “emailed” info, I also like to show screen shots on a day by day basis 5 days befor and after the event like this. Unfortunately, on of the big drawbacks in automatically advancing and recording the animation is that the user does not have any control over how fast those increments jumps in time occur. I’d really like to see the fixed as a setting so it can be slowed down to a reasonable timelapse sequence, especially on increments larger than a minute. I resort to manually stepping thru while recording right now. If this was changed, I would not hesitate to this up to 5 stars. It is very close to that now. ### 5/5 — Star dreams *2020-10-02, version 6.7.5* See. I grew up in the foothills east of San Diego, California. The sky is often clear enough to see many stars most of the year. Sky & Telescope magazine makes it easy to explore the sky and follow the location of planets , stars, and comets. Now I live in Fresno where the sky is most often shrouded by haze, and now it’s worse with the Summer-long forrest fires. But with Sky Safari Pro I can follow the gems in the sky without concern for the haze, dust storms, or the occasional low pressure area. ### 5/5 — Update problem *2020-08-31, version 6.7.3* I updated the app and now it will not go into [AR] in compass mode does nothing. So now I’m using SkyPortal to view the sky in [AR] mode. Hopefully they will fix this new issue they created with another update very soon. Loaded it on iPadPro 4th gen and iPhone 11 Pro Max. Asked each install to show me position of Neowise. Each computer had identical default configurations. However, the iPhone shows it below the horizon while the iPad Pro shows it above the horizon. What’s up? ### 5/5 — Cool app - no support except through reviews? *2020-07-18, version 6.7.2* Keep getting a zen desk rejection on site to get support. Stuck in a loop!! Frustrating. How does Comet NeoWise NOT make the “Tonight‘a Best” list? It’s been around since March. 😓 Wish meteor showers could be searched by “best dates to view” them... impossible to figure out their peak from data given. I’ll share more as I get into it. Love the apps overwhelming details. Would love to give it 4-5 stars once there is human contact and response... UPDATE: that link you provided is the exact same one causing the loop issues. Doesn’t work! NeoWise is on my iPad version not my iPhone version? And isn’t “Low on horizon” relative to where someone is at? Spend the extra dough and go deep get the Pro version-no regrets here. 17.2 mag. limit works for galaxy imaging. Little things like instantly creating observing lists, by category, with all the data will save hours and hours-great images in the database too. Every freakin’ little star-tap it, it’s got a story. Largest database I’ve ever seen. This app is the first step to iPad control of my GOTO LosmandyGM811 (C11). Have yet to control mount but the interface appears simple. Elegant and intuitive. Worth every penny. ### 5/5 — Layout bug iPhone X (2017) and later (also support) *2020-04-10, version 6.6.4* Search for a comet to get you to the screen I'm talking about. Try tapping the (i) button at lower right. You can't, because you laid it out against "Superview" (screen edge) instead of "Safe Area" (so it isn't blocked by the swipe-up-to-exit bar). Easy fix. I wonder if the last row of the table has the same bug. I TRIED to report this to SimC's support forum, but with both Safari and Firefox on iOS 13 the site balks over some kind of cookie voodoo I don't run into anywhere else. SimC doesn't make it easy to do it any favors. ### 5/5 — Great but version 6 could have been better *2020-01-12, version 6.6.2* I have been a SkySafari Pro user since version 3. As an amateur astronomer and astrophotographer, I consider this app an essential tool for planning targets for both outreach and imaging due to the convenience of having this powerful app on my phone. I consider this a 5 star app but am only giving 4 stars on version 6 for the following reasons and the upgrade experience could have been better. 1. I held off upgrading from 5 to 6 for a year. I expected most of the bugs to be wrung out by now but when I upgraded after taking advantage of the 50% off, I found an existing basic feature in 5 not working in 6 and one of the new key selling point features not working either. SC is aware of these issues and have already fixed one and will be coming out with a fix for the other soon in 6.6.3. 2. The new features since 5 did not seem to be worth upgrading. Augmented Reality is probably the most interesting one but I am not sure how useful it will be to me. The voice control is all but useless. The reorganization of the toolbar seems to be an improvement but I am still trying to get used to it. The planner and graph are fairly simplistic but may be of some use to me. The main reason for my upgrading is to get the latest supported version. I am still a very happy SkySafari user and am just offering my review as constructive criticism. **Developer response:** Thank you so much for taking the time to send us your review. Connecting the app to the scope using wifi, alignment, & finding objects in the sky using the app is very simple. The app provides a ton interesting information for those wanting to learn about the universe. The app is well worth the money. My only complaint is the app seems to lock up when using it with Celestron's Star Sense. ### 5/5 — Highly recommend *2019-11-12, version 6.5.1* I have used SkySafari for years, actually, since it first came out. I use the wifi system (3 units) with a ServoCat and two Takahashi NJPs. I have done hours of observing and it has never let me down. I spent one night with a friend at the TSP going from object to object from sunset to dawn without a single glitch. Best night of observing I have ever experienced. Their product support has also been very good for me. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Don’t Bother *2019-07-11, version 6.4.0* There needs to be a way to leave zero stars. I cannot get this app to align my telescope and it works poorly on my IPad. When I connect to my telescope the app flashes between where the app thinks the telescope is pointing and where the scope is actually pointing. The rest of the app is interesting and useful. It is unfortunate that it will not align my telescope. I have SkyPortal, Starry Night and SkySafari 6 Pro. All are written by Simulation Curriculum and work poorly if you have a Celestron scope with a WiFi device, Wedge and Starsense camera. Good luck with this app. I give up! I had this apple on my phone and I had to delete it because the performance was too poor. I have it on my IMac as well. None of the three versions of this app would properly align my celestron CPC 11 inch deluxe edge hd telescope. The app remembers where you last had the telescope pointing when you shut it off. It will not forget that setting. I set up my telescope each night and have no need for the app to remember anything about where I had my telescope last pointed to. It routinely points to the ground when I try and align it. Support has not been of any help. ### 1/5 — Excellent Product Features with Poor Support *2019-05-16, version 6.4.0* I have very mixed emotions about SkySafari 6 Pro. It’s feature packed and a very capable iPhone/iPad planetarium program. The telescope control features work very well, and I’m able to interface to my Meade computerized telescopes through the Meade Stella wifi interface. But I had difficulty using the audio for the app, and discovered that the support for the product is very limited. When you try to call the company, there is no number to call for the iOS products. When you go to submit a service ticket online, you’re directed to the community bulletin board. So I submitted my problem online, and had no responses after 4 days. I posted a question (my second try on the forum) and have not gotten an answer after 7 days. If the company is going to direct people to the community bulletin board, they should certainly monitor the board and provide assistance when needed. I finally figured the audio problem out myself. My experience with SkySafari 6 Pro is that it’s a 5-star product with zero-star support. It’s a feature-packed program but you might be on your own if you have a problem. Further, you have to buy the program again each time there is a major update—running counter to other iOS apps. That might be ok if they supported the program, but doesn’t work for me if the company doesn’t provide support. ### 2/5 — Difficult to use *2021-08-07, version 6.8.5* I saw a video of an astrophotographer who raved about this app as an upgraded method to plan and direct their mount when using an ASIAIR pro. It took me a while to figure out how to get the app to display my field of view boxes to display on the sky. When searching for objects using names such as Cat’s Paw or Tulip nebula, half don’t show up without an exact catalog designation. Good luck finding Sharpless 101 with the search. I planned on using the FOV indicators to determine which equipment to use for objects, but half the ones I look up don’t show an image. (Wizard nebula, Tulip nebula) Lastly, the compass feature keeps turning itself on while I’m trying to look at a region, and sometimes it doesn’t let me turn it off. Maybe my expectations were set too high, but I find it would be a perfect app, if it wasn’t so difficult for me to use. ### 2/5 — developer response to "Empty search result for Comet C/2020 (NEOWISE)" *2020-07-22, version 6.7.2* The Simulation Curriculum developer responded quickly to my recent review of this app, "Empty search result for Comet C/2020 (NEOWISE)". Their response suggested that I run "Update Minor Planet Data" in Settings > Solar System. What he failed to say is that the program bug is not fixed and that I would continue having to "Update Minor Planet Data" every single time I open the app on my iPhone. The update completes normally on my iPhone, however, and the comet is then found but the bug also then prevents the Search results from being "remembered" from use to use. Poor. Oh, and contacting Simulation Curriculum directly means posting on their community forum ("All SkySafari inquiries are addressed in the Community Forums (Check the box to access).". Again poor, in agreement with other reviewers regarding app support mechanism. **Developer response:** Update: it’s difficult to troubleshoot on this review medium, our forum really is the best place. Keep in mind our app is downloaded thousands of times a day. We do our best. On the disappearing comet, we store the minor planet data in a “caches” directory on iOS. The OS can delete that data at anytime if it needs disk space. We’re looking into it but best advice right now is to ensure you as much free space on your device as possible. Thank you. You can reach us directly at https://support.simulationcurriculum.com/hc/en-us/requests/new - we can make this right. ### 3/5 — Works when it wants to but great when it does *2021-04-29, version 6.8.3* This app was great when I first loaded it a little over a year ago but now the connection stability is intermittent. Also, when I turn the screen off and stick the phone in my pocket to observe a target then, turn the phone back on to use the app, reconnection is slow and at times it will not connect and I’ll lose alignment. There also seems to be a bit of a lag between completing three star alignment and start of tracking which brings the target off center. So, if you goto a target it will also be off center or sometimes out of FOV and you have to do a little searching around to find the object. I try to fix this by centering the object in the eyepiece the hitting align in the app but this function work maybe half the time. The lag also happens with the Celestron hand controller so it may be a scope software issue. When using this app you are connecting it via the telescopes wifi so if you want to control any other devices via wifi (I use a Sony a7ii for Astrophotography connected via wifi) you will need another phone, laptop, tablet to control both simultaneously. The live telescope view does not work 90% of the time. ### 3/5 — Unable to use augmented reality on IPad *2020-08-30, version 6.7.3* I cannot get the app to connect to my camera on my iPad to use the augmented reality. I have checked the settings on my iPad to make sure the app is allowed to connect to the camera. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app. I have swiped down on the screen while in augmented reality to change the contrast and nothing happens. It is obvious that the app is not connecting to my IPad camera to allow augmented reality to be used. I also have the Starwalk 2 app and the camera in that app connects to Starwalk 2 with no problem. I even deleted the Starwalk 2 app to see if that could be the problem with the camera not connecting in SkySafari Pro. Still no connection between my iPad camera and SkySafari to allow the use of augmented reality. ### 3/5 — New version bug *2020-08-27, version 6.7.3* With the latest release, a bug was introduced with the time/date at the bottom of the screen. There is a separate character between the date and time. When the cursor is placed on the additional character it appears you are adjusting the hour. When you place your cursor on the hour you are adjusting the minutes, when your cursor is on the minute you are adjusting the seconds. It is workable, but was not apparent with the previous version and should be fixed. ### 3/5 — Good as always but with flaws *2018-08-30, version 6.2.0* I bought this as an upgrade from sky safari 4, which I enjoyed. I bought it for the new features in this version, namely AR, voice commands and Celestron audio tours. Tht AR works well, but the voice commands don't work. They really shouldn't even include it until it works better because this is a source of frustration. Also, the audio volume is extremely muted and difficult to hear for several objects. It works fine and loud for some objects, but others are so soft you can hardly hear them. So I am disappointed that the upgraded features aren't working very well for me. I regret spending the money on the upgrade from 4. ### 3/5 — Requires another account, drops support for saving settings on cloud services *2017-12-24, version 6.0.0* I was excited for the new version but disheartened to find out that the migration process for my settings from version 5 requires iTunes on a computer and a lot of manual copying. Not very convenient if you exist in the “post-pc” world with just a tablet. This version just about requires an account on the proprietary livesky service and drops all support for saving your settings on iCloud or google drive. One more account you need to keep track of, and the concern if it goes away what happens to your settings? ### 4/5 — Ongoing support? *2022-02-26, version 6.8.5* I purchased SkySafari Pro 6 a while ago and updates are few and far between. Now that SkySafari pro 7 is out and no upgrade credit for having 6 is available will SkySafari Pro 6 be left in the dust? I hope not, as it wasn’t cheap. There should at least be a discount for having purchased 6 pro.. Goto functionality with my Atlas Pro mount was buggy/unusable for the longest time. They need to respect older versions. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — I come back to this app often 😍 *2023-08-07* I love this app!!! My fav thing about it is the level of customization that I can apply, depending on how I'm using it on a given night (or day). One caveat though. Once in awhile information about an object may seem a little off. So confirm with multiple sources. That doesn't bother me because I love researching and picture surfing anyway. A recent example is the object known as SagDEG. My version of SkySafari Pro has it as 46,000 light years from Earth. Elsewhere, it is thought to be 70,000 light years from Earth (which seems more likely to me for a couple of reasons). But get the app, enjoy it, and dig deep into the info. Let SkySafari be your guide, and the vast night sky will astonish you over and over again. ### 5/5 — Wow! *2022-09-16, version 6.8.5* I have learned soooo much from this app! I allowed location access and agreed let it set sky to my time and boom. Perfect match with what I see above me. Great identification information. I can twirl about and hold phone at any angle and it follows in real time. No lag or jumpiness. I am sure more advanced users can continue to have just as much fun. ### 5/5 — Amazing Precision! *2022-06-27, version 6.8.5* With this wondrous app, you can go back 2000 or more years and see eclipses mentioned by the ancients exactly as they witnessed them! Sunrise and moonrise times are exact to the second. You can plan photographs to include alignments between celestial objects and monuments to the nearest 1/16 inch of tripod location. You can see how the precession of the Earth’s axis over 1000’s of years changed the view of of the night sky during the winter solstice. Phases of the moon are very realistic. Amazing number of exotic objects you can track, like the quasar 3C 273. And of course, fantastically precise placement of all celestial objects. Easy manipulation of time and any location on earth from which to view the night sky. I’m overwhelmed with delight about this app! ### 5/5 — DID I JUST GET RIPPED OFF? *2022-05-10, version 6.8.5* I bought the app SkySafari 6 and downloaded it to my iPhone. Later when I went back to the App Store to download it to my iPad, i noticed the note at the bottom telling me SS6 was an old version and SS7 was now available. THIS WAS THE SAME DAY! When I went over to the SS7 app, expecting to have access to to at least a reduced rate for an update to my BRAND NEW OUT OF DATE APP I was shocked to find that I’m expected to pay even more for 7 than I did for 6. If this is what it appears to be, it is outrageous. And not only will I NOT buy SS7, I will demand a refund for the obsolete version you sold me. I will wait patiently for a reply. It has taught me so much of the night sky! That said, my hang up at this particular moment is that I was given a pop up promising 50% off SSP7. I tapped it through to the App Store, where the upgrade was simply full price. SkySafari is all that AND portable. The detail and sheer amount of information is amazing. Having all of this functionality on an iPad is incredibly useful. I first installed this on my 13” iPad Pro, assuming this would need all of that power to run smoothly. But it also runs just fine on my Mini 5. For a new astronomy enthusiast, this has everything you need to get started. For someone like me, who has been looking at the sky for many years, this is an awesome reference. ### 5/5 — One of the best available - but having some problems with in-app upgrades *2021-02-13, version 6.8.0* This is a remarkable tool and is definitely great for serious stargazers as well those new to the hobby. However, as mentioned by others, the in-App purchases look to be very interesting, but have problems installing correctly. For instance, I purchased the Apollo Missions add on and, despite my best efforts, it still won’t launch. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the whole app and still no success. Maybe it’s not compatible with Apple’s newest OS? Who knows. But I am unable to get any support from the developers in the forum. At this point, I wished I could get a refund. It‘a not much money...but it is the principle.
