Sleuth provides the first data-driven public reference for children’s health. We do this through a community built knowledge base. When parents search for children’s health answers, they are looking for data. They want to know whether symptoms are normal or worrisome. They want benchmarks that show how their child compares. Given information about a condition, they want to know what the arc of that condition looks like, and what resources (medical or otherwise) have helped other parents.

Products have personalities, and we want Sleuth to project our genuine concern to get kids the best care. The idea is great, but needs a lot more work. They need more definitions on the quizzes. What do they mean when it’s “severe”? Define “severe”? Also is there anything scientific about the results? Or is it just comparing my kid to other parents who also were guessing on their answers? I don’t know many 14 month olds that can properly use plural words, but apparently my kid is late? Just bizarre questions, confusing answers, and questionable results.

There are two places you can find more information: 

(1) In the app, you can click "more" next to the text description of your results below the "score." This will show you the estimated distribution of scores by parents at a given age. 

(2) You can visit Sleuth's website and see the Methodology and Data Validation sections (https://hellosleuth.com/help/about-data) for more information about how we collect and validate data. 

In many cases, our questions are based on widely used and extensively validated questionnaires.

We make a strenuous effort to collect representative data from kids of different ages and circumstances across the U.S. to give you meaningful comparisons. As we mention, we've run 62,000 surveys for this purpose with more on the way. That said, this is a work in progress. Thank you for the review.

### 1/5 — Not accurate for real measurement

The quizzes are not based on any real underlying data or definitions. For example, what is a high amount of stacking and sorting for a three year old? Is what I think of as high the same as other parents answering the question? Who know, it’s not scientific and the scores will not be based on anything except other people’s rankings based on their own feelings

**Developer response:** Hi from the Sleuth team! The stacking question is about "Stacking at least two small objects." We will investigate whether it's confusing people. 

We compare our scores against established peer-reviewed research that shows norms for kids' development to make sure these are closely in line. There are clear standards showing what percentages of kids can stack two objects at different ages - and our goal is to make the details available in a helpful way. But we don't always succeed.

### 1/5 — Like the idea but needs some work

Im a first time mom but have a 16 mo old. While I obviously dont know every stastitic some of these seem off base from what the AAP, CDC, and what our pediatrician says.

For example, for speech, it asks about whether your child speaks in plurals, i.e. feet or teeth.

It does not ask how many words they speak by a certain age (which would be the more relevant question in terms of speech delay, not factoring in other factors of course). Struggling to see how this app can be factual when I’m not understanding its source data.

### 2/5 — Fun idea but has some flaws!

I downloaded this app as a fun way to see and track milestones for my 20mo. Right away I noticed a few problems. The first is that questions in the quizzes are sometimes vague and need defining. For example they ask a question about severity of tantrums. What would a severe tantrum be defined as? X amount of minutes or volume of crying/screaming? Same goes with the question about determination. How determined is your child? I’m not sure what that means here. Is it determination while doing a puzzle or determination when she has her mind set on doing something she has come up with. 

My second problem is that there seems to be a discrepancy in results. For example it asked if my 20mo old was coloring in the lines and drawing things I recognized. To both I answered not at all. The results said that she was slightly late in both these categories. Then underneath said these skills typically develop around age 5 but 3 would be early. This is a confusing discrepancy. I guess compared to 70 percent other app users with 20 months old she is late. I have a hard time believing that many if any 20 month olds are coloring in the lines and drawing recognizable pictures. The results make me question the validity of the other quizzes as well. 

The last minor feedback is that the app led me into a quiz on potty training but I think the first question should be “have you started potty training yet?”.

TLDR: the app is a fun idea but needs more user data that is correctly self reported and more specificity and examples within the quiz questions.
