My friend’s Merlin was also beyond the app’s capabilities. It did correctly identify a wood pigeon but even a five year old can get that one right. ### 1/5 — ? *2026-05-26, version 5.0.17* Tried it once and it didn’t work ### 1/5 — Why lie? *2026-05-04, version 5.0.12* It’s not free. Totally non-functional now ### 1/5 — Where are the cookies from? *2025-09-20, version 4.4.8* I recently reviews this app, stating that I didn’t want to complete the 3rd party cookie consent that I got when installing the app for the first time. The developer states that they do not use cookies, but a part of their app seems to be using web content - and that is triggering a cookie consent notice. It’s easy enough to check on first install. I suggest the developers should be better versed in how their app is working. ### 1/5 — Was good but not great any more *2023-09-16* I originally purchased the All in one family bundle in October 22. My phone was so badly damaged a few months ago (June 23) that I had to reinstall all my apps and restore my purchases. I had difficulty restoring my account so contacted the team directly. I spoke to Michael who originally seemed helpful, however after a few exchanges he offered me the choice to upgrade to a yearly subscription. The yearly subscription involves a profile and storing identifications. I have only ever used the app to identify birds, I have no interest in setting up a profile or storing them. When I stated that I only wished to restore my one-time purchase (which he’d stated was for life) I never heard from him again. Disappointed, I purchased the All in one one time purchase again to access the song identification without adverts. The app was so good I had to have it again and I was happy just to get it back. The second issue I have encountered is that the song identifier is not as good as the previous version. It takes longer and is more sensitive to surroundings, even when I’m in the middle of nowhere and there are no cars/wind. The first version was incredible! It picked up various birds and was quick and almost 100% correct. I’m gutted it’s no longer worth the purchase, let alone the extra money. Really disappointed. I’m sure there are better apps out there. ### 1/5 — Très déçue *2022-04-05* J’habite en milieu rural et chaque fois que j’ai utilisé cette application pour identifier les chants des oiseaux qui m’entouraient, j’ai obtenu quasiment tout le temps : moineau domestique, verdier d’Europe, Rossignol philomèle à la suite comme si elle était incapable de trouver . Le matin très tôt (avant le lever du jour)en ce moment, on entend le merle noir et certains petits fringillidés mais certainement pas de moineau. Je viens de faire le test et j’entendais un merle noir chanter assez loin. Lorsque j’ai ouvert la fenêtre et orienté mon smartphone en direction du chant, j’ai eu encore droit au moineau. Après avoir attendu une minute sans proposition, une voiture ou un avion commençait à se faire entendre très loin, et à ce moment là, l’application a enfin daigné proposer quelque chose (le moineau). En plein petit bois, à côté d’une mésange qui chantait fort mercredi dernier, l’appli a détecté à la suite le moineau, le verdier et une perruche à collier ### 1/5 — Vraiment très mauvais! *2020-07-12* Je ne comprends pas les commentaires positifs sur cette appli! J’habite en campagne donc pas besoin d’aller loin pour écouter les oiseaux, je la teste tous les jours en situation réelle elle identifie n’importe quoi sur les chants d’oiseaux, même pas un résultat positif sur 10 essais! Elle passe en revue plusieurs espèces comme si elle affichait des résultats au hasard, elle détecte le merle noir ou le Verdier d’Europe quasiment sur tous les essais s’en est comique! Bref.. sur Androïd il existe une appli gratuite qui s’appelle BirdNet, c’est une merveille pour l’identification des chants d’oiseaux, sans être parfaite elle identifie positivement 8 ou 9 chants sur 10, messieurs les développeurs il y a vraiment un truc qui ne va pas dans vos algorithmes... je suis déçu heureusement je n’ai rien payé. ### 2/5 — Poor *2026-02-19, version 5.0.3* This is a really poor app. Using sound it only identifies 1 possible 2 birds whereas there is at least 4. And you have to be close. Tested the photo ID of a Siskin. I had to crop the photo to only include the bird. It came back as a green finch. Don’t waste your money! For example I have used Birda in the past but the fees I didn’t like and also no options to pick which type of Birds or hear their calls which I think will be useful as I love to hear bird song first thing in a morning. It’s been super helpful in identifying local birds too as I was convinced I could get the local crows to start following me (I mean how cool would that look! Ha ha ) and was told there wouldn’t be crows and it was ravens. As a Muslim, it brings me a sense of awe toward the One who created such intricately and beautifully designed animals. This app is fun and easy to use. I can collect the birds I’ve identified in a journal and it brings me so much joy to add a new bird, and to be able to put a name to the pretty birds I come across. Also love the quizzes which test my bird knowledge. We were instantly impressed with the app and accuracy of the recognition and all the options. It’s easy to upload a photo or record sounds etc. we like the features and ease of use . Our goal initially was for some family fun to see which birds were in our vicinity however we are hooked now and use it all the time to identify birds locally and to keep a log and track who’s coming close by be it in the garden or when we are out and about .
