Initially seemed intuitive (adding plants) however information on plants & care is extremely limited/vague, seems like they encourage you to send messages to their experts instead of posting information about plants so people can read. Watering schedule seems to have only one setting for one plant (once a week?)if there is more to it - it’s kinda hard to figure out. Also there IS option to sign up for month to month subscription however it’s not apparent when subscription is offered. A lot of good reviews.. why? I feel like I’m missing something. I signed up for premium service but interface/nothing changed, not sure what I payed for. It doesn’t even show the current month’s calender. I believe there’s a glitch here. ### 5/5 — BEST THING FOR A PLANT MOM *2018-07-25, version 4.0.6* I have started a greenhouse and this means people give me plants now as gifts. Unfortunately they are rarely tagged and I have no idea what it is, or how to take care of it! I snap a picture and someone always comes and explains what I need to do to take care of my plant! The most helpful thing. I have spent hours searching on google trying to find the right plant, but it always is frustrating. These people make it easy! ### 5/5 — 2 Green Thumbs Up!! *2017-09-17, version 4.0.3* Downloaded app specifically because I searched everywhere trying to identify this particular plant. Even my local nursery, one of the best around, was stumped. BUT....they did recommend this app! Downloaded, posted question with photo and within an hour someone correctly identified the mystery plant. VERY impressed. Hope I can return the favor to help someone else down the road. Oh and I didn't have to pay to get an answer like several other apps. Highly recommend. ### 5/5 — Impressive! *2017-07-16, version 4.0.3* I'd purchased a couple of plants in the clearance section at Lowes and no one seemed to know what they were or how to care for them. I spent hours Googling and trying to figure it out before deciding to give this app a go. I took a photo of the plant and received an email back 15 minutes later with the name and description and it was spot on! I'm incredibly impressed and love the human interaction aspect of the app. Great work! ### 3/5 — Having difficulty *2017-05-11, version 4.0.3* I love the concept of this app but here are the issues I have had so far: Took me 4 tries to set up an account, different choices of where I want to go in the app requires additional sign ins even if I select from your emails. This is frustrating. Once I sign in to the app I should not have to sign in again to go to another part of the app. I realize part of this may be a learning curve but right now I am very frustrated!! The sending of my plant and getting a response was the easy part. Also, how do I earn credits? Will I need them if I buy a premium membership? Thank you! ### 5/5 — So helpful *2017-05-06, version 4.0.3* We bought a farm and some livestock. Not knowing much about plants, I need a lot of help. This app provides it. Trying to decide what to keep in the gardens and the yard versus what to pull out has been difficult up until now. I'm cataloging all the weeds, garden plants, herbs, houseplants, and all the pasture contents. Thanks to Ron and Garden Compass, I have found toxic plants in the pasture that I need to remove. This app may have saved some animals. I am grateful, happy, and entertained. ### 5/5 — Anytime anywhere they're there *2017-04-16, version 4.0.2* I admit that I was not too excited to find out that they had begun to charge members for a subscription service and for a moment their plant experts lacked a friendly service tone. BUT NOW??? Oh man! It's fast, it's easy, they're friendly and happy to help (there are understandably a couple sour apples here and there.) and it's not a ridiculously priced! They're annual price $30 is a steal compared to their monthly price $5/6. Most importantly their endless, informational, above and beyond responses seem like second nature to them. Love. it. Garden compass. FOR. LYFE! ### 5/5 — Why didn't I find this app sooner *2017-02-01, version 3.4* This app has everything you need to care for your plants. I bought the premium membership and now have access to unlimited plant ID's and it gives me a full explanation of my plants and how to take care of them. It even gives me product recommendations for each plant. I'm so excited that I found an app that has everything I need so I don't have to waste my time searching the internet for answers! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Too difficult *2021-09-22, version 6.7* Too difficult. I just want to identify and go on. Takes way too long to identify ### 1/5 — Terrible App *2021-02-13, version 6.3* I used the ask the expert feature to identify a known plant (Ctenanthe setosa “Compact Star”) with a good clear photo and after several weeks received a reply of “prayer plant”. While this is technically accurate, it is not what I expected from a so-called expert since there are literally hundreds of plants that could be called a prayer plant. This app is definitely a work in progress, as after re-downloading it I see that they’ve corrected the scientific name of the Easter cactus. However, their Christmas Cactus page still shows a photo of a Thanksgiving Cactus. The inaccuracy of this app, combined with their petty response to my feedback: (“Thank you for the compliment. Our users know your claims are false and see right through you trying to promote your own app!”) caused me to delete this app again. I still prefer Planta since I don’t have the time or interest to waste with these developers. And I have no interest inPlanta, except being able to trust the information in the app!! ### 1/5 — Terrible *2018-05-27, version 4.0.6* I purchased this app because like hiking and sometimes I don't know the names of the plants I encounter. Very disappointed, one time the answer I got from this app was: broad leaf weed, pretty stupid answer. on another occasion instead of an answer they suggested to take the plant to a nursery for them to identity it for me. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to cancel this useless app. I will have to freeze my credit card instead, on top of that the bank charges me a foreign fee every month. I'm guessing this app is based in India or somewhere far far away. Now I am being charged twice a month instead of once. ### 2/5 — Meh *2022-08-25, version 6.9* I was excited and added my 20 different backyard plants and trees to the app. Using the free version, the information on each of the plants is minimal and random. I was able to upload my own pictures of the plants and that’s my favorite art of the app unfortunately. The “My Care” section allows you to schedule what I suppose would be various tasks into a calendar and receive alerts on specific days. All that I’m able to schedule for my 20 plants is a watering schedule. We are on a drip system so we don’t need a watering schedule. We need a flowering schedule, pruning schedule, fertilizing schedule, etc. None of that is available, so the app is almost useless. Another must have feature that is not available is adding notes to my individual plants. There is no spot to add my own comments other than hand-writing notes and then taking a picture of it. Lame ### 2/5 — Disappointed *2021-07-05, version 6.6* I thought this app would help identify what is wrong with a plant. All I got was an identification which I already knew. I stated the name of it in my submission to the experts! Not worth paying for premium. I am deleting app ### 2/5 — Comparing other apps *2021-06-24, version 6.6* Before I decide to subscribe, I had few questions to ask, sent an email and never heard back for weeks, tried one more time and still nothing to this day. It’s clear if I subscribe it, I won’t expect an answer right away or none. I gave this 2 stars because of the features, it looks good and it’s something I could use. But the respond service isn’t there. :( moving on to other app. ### 2/5 — Google is better *2020-01-07, version 5.0.53* I spent a good hour looking at blurry pictures of other people’s plants to catalog my own because this app can only scan certain bar codes,none from Home Depot. After that, the descriptions of my plants, what they like and dislike, was 1-2 sentences per plant that I already knew about. After using 2 credits given to me I’m expected to pay 35$ to ask questions the app should answer on its own. I can go to google for free instead of waiting a week for these expensive responses. In short- this app does nothing for me ### 2/5 — Cool idea - poor excecution *2017-04-19, version 4.0.2* I put up photos of three plants to identify, even paying a little extra because I was eager to get it done. One was completely incorrectly identified (I was suspicious when the leaves and branching looked nothing like the species they mentioned and my suspicions were later confirmed by another plant expert). The second one has been awaiting identification for ten days now. The last one was identified - probably correctly but I am still not 100% sure. Wish I could get my money back! Maybe they don't realize that people would be willing to pay a little extra for plant identification.. but you have to prove the service is worth it. It's not. ### 2/5 — Misleading calendar feature *2016-12-27, version 3.4* The garden calendar doesn't give monthly care advice for the specific plants in your garden as the overview suggests. The "advice" is for extremely broad categories, like "vegetables and herbs". It's not useful for planning and timing specific types of plants in your garden. I'm wondering why no other reviewers have mentioned that you can only add three plants to the garden before you are prompted to pay. Since the advice is so generic that it includes all veggies in one category, why would I pay to add more vegetable plants? I never used the pest and plant ID features. I know what my plants are - I wanted the calendar feature as it was advertised. As it is, it's not a useful garden calendar at all. I tried this app because it had the best reviews but no one mentioned these issues..... if you don't plan to pay to talk to the experts then I think you can pass on this app. ### 2/5 — Has Potential *2016-08-23, version 3.1* I sent a pic of my roses that have a problem and was told it could be a virus, fungus or bug and to take it to someone to determine. That was the whole point of the service I thought- to identify. They gave me list of every Rose problem possible. That was no help at all. The only good thing about this is keeping a list of all your plants and getting tips. The tips are very generic and most plants seem to give guidance based on a type instead of the exact needs of the individual plant. Save your money and just look up the info yourself. I have been using this one to keep my plants growing at our home. My wife and I have no real plant knowledge so this app certainly solved this issue. This latest update is epic! These guys added a bunch of “finders” so now you can search for bugs, diseases, plants etc like you’re shopping. You narrow by the criteria—great for looking for the ideal plant you need. Even better when I’m trying to identify to figure out what the brown spots are in my guava tree leaves. Seems they may also be starting to sell unusual new versions of plants but I haven’t tried that function yet. Keeping this app to see what improvements they come up with next. Probably my most valuable gardening tool. ### 5/5 — Nothing like it *2020-08-23, version 6.0* I finally found an app that is focused on helping with my plants stay on track. Amazing calendar loads just like my google calendar with my tasks. The customization is so great since I needed to schedule tasks when I can do them. I love the local touch too. BEST APP !! *2019-06-08, version 4.0.6* I love this app! It’s amazing to send off a pic of a small clump of leaves and have someone speedily identify if it’s a weed or something I planted (and forgotten). This is a great app. I love the ability to ask questions and the experts respond! The people who identify my plants are so knowledgeable and kind. We have a tiny nyc garden. The super ordered a cheap organic soil a few years ago and the folks at this app helped me identify hemlock, ornamental strawberry vines and a bunch of other weird stuff not normally found on a nyc sidewalk. They were super at finding out what strange thing had begun to grow in our little space. I can’t recommend this app enough. I love it. It is the secret of my green thumb - with their help I am able to label every plant and know I am yanking out a weed not something I bought, planted and forgot. Best app I’ve purchased. I happily pay the small subscription fee for a years worth of garden glory!
