### 2/5 — Frustrating

*2023-09-27, version 3.0.61*

App always freezes if I leave it and the return to it. Need to always shut down app then restart to get accurate reading. Also often reads there is something on the food probes when there isn’t.
Smartfire is only 1-2 years old and very well cared for.

### 4/5 — Good, but can be better

*2022-07-05, version 3.0.30*

Overall it works as designed: the temperatures are good and I can follow the progress nicely on my phone.
A couple of things would be nice:
1) put the time on the x-axis of the combined graph.
2) add a stopwatch/timer which I can start and stop manually
3) add a algorithm which tells me what time the food is ready. You have the progress of the temperature, so you can calculate when it reaches the selected temperature.
But overall I’m pretty satisfied with it.

### 2/5 — Old app was more stable

*2022-03-20, version 3.0.30*

New app might look better but is difficult to use and not very reliable.

### 2/5 — Smart fire

*2022-03-11, version 3.0.30*

This app is clunky and difficult to use. Invest in an upgrade to make connections/setup and general use easier. Only reason I persist is I have forked out $350 for a fan.

### 1/5 — CrApp App

*2021-11-20, version 3.0.0*

The latest version of this app is useless. Can’t save settings, temps are reading wrong (tested against a MEATER that’s been calibrated against an instrument thermometer), is using last cook before upgrade which has a pit temp of 200C vs the current required pit temp of 110C…

I was about to upgrade to V5 hardware but have now binned and looking at other options.

Really poor upgrade. FB page says it has been tested for 6 months - needed another 3…

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work anymore

*2021-06-28, version 2.3.125*

The device used to log on to WiFi with much fiddling, but will not anymore. The unit is pretty much bricked, since there are no physical controls on the device.

### 1/5 — Horrible

*2020-09-24, version 2.3.95*

App work whenever it wants to,
Constantly unsynchronized.
This has been such a let down unfortunately.
Will try to return and get my money back

### 1/5 — Buggy and unresponsive

*2020-09-19, version 2.3.95*

It doesn’t have even a basic on/off control to start or stop a cook!

The app communicates with a cloud server and that server then controls the pit. The app is often out of sync with the server and not accurately displaying what the pit is doing. Changes to the settings in the app get mangled at the server and cause unpredictable results at the pit. You could be waiting for hours with little to no response or find it stoking too much. Bottom line is serious unpredictability and an attention drain because you won’t be able to rely on the product to automate your cook.

### 2/5 — Why all the great reviews?

*2020-02-13, version 2.3.5*

Zero success on this thing so far. Connected initially. Disconnected mid-smoke even with Bluetooth in near proximity. Had to reinstall the app and login again. Disconnected again and can’t login anymore. Just hangs. So many expectations for this thing and complete failure. Quality must have gone in the tank reading all these reviews and also online grilling groups.

### 5/5 — Smart smoker

*2019-04-19, version 2.1.41*

Brilliant app. I was half expecting it to be a basic temp slider and that’s it, this app gives you graphs showing the temp through the whole cook, recommendations for certain types of meat, you can set 3 different meats to each of the 3 probes. You can even pair multiple devices to the app at once. You do have to create a login but that shouldn’t be a problem for 99% of people able to use the App Store.

You can see they’ve put some effort into this, it’s not just an app for the sake of it.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Planned Obsolescence???

*2024-02-29, version 3.0.70*

Purchased SmartFire in 2019 then told no longer supported in 2022. Was working until most recent App update (late January to Early February 2024) now it cannot be seen in App even though it is connected WiFi (I have a managed system so can see what is connected). Decided to reset WiFi on unit and now I cannot register device at all in App. Seems like a good way to get someone to upgrade so I have…to another brand that looks after their customers.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t want to work

*2023-11-15, version 3.0.61*

I can’t even login to the app. It wants me to use social but Facebook doesn’t support it.

I tried Apple login - never left the login screen. Tried to make a profile with my email address. Wouldn’t let me create it.

It used to work, but stopped today mid cook. And now there is now way for me to get it to work. I’ll have to manually control the fire and use my instant read to check temps.

The device costs hundred and without the app is useless.

### 1/5 — Smartfire 5

*2023-09-25, version 3.0.61*

Non existent support, their help is worse than useless. They don’t reply to emails for help. A nightmare of a product to set up. Is the product good, who knows, can’t get it going. No support at all. The manual is useless.

### 1/5 — Email login not working

*2023-08-06, version 3.0.61*

Love my Smartfire, but email login on the iOS app no longer working

### 1/5 — Old App was better

*2022-01-22, version 3.0.11*

Used the new app first time today and cannot select the probes to set the temperature and food type etc. It works for pit but not for probes. Please fix.

### 1/5 — Didn’t need to reinvent the wheel

*2022-01-10, version 3.0.8*

The old app was so much better. Felt like it never went through a UX sign off. Menu aren’t intuitive and felt like it was written by a high school kid. Wished there was an option to roll back. The controller felt more stable with the old app

### 1/5 — Started great - now terrible

*2022-01-02, version 3.0.8*

App constantly fails to load and requires re-pairing with device. Worse than that, mid-cook the device fails to connect with the app, resulting in temp failures. This happens even when the app and device are only a complete of meters away and still connected via Bluetooth.

### 1/5 — App is terrible

*2021-11-22, version 3.0.0*

Phone did the update to the new app. Won’t connect to the old smartfire. Guess I’ll buy a BBQ Genius instead of the “upgrade”.

### 1/5 — Update Fail

*2021-11-22, version 3.0.0*

Used to be a great app. The update made it so that the target temp resets when I switch to another app. And the fan doesn’t stop when it reaches target temp. So it’s basically less than useless now.

### 1/5 — New app is terrible

*2021-11-21, version 3.0.0*

I am doing my first cook with the new app. Bring back the old app now. I was aiming for a temp of 290 my grill is at 360 and the fan is still at 100%!!!
I have had to disconnect my Smartfire and go manual. How do I go back to the old app, it worked perfectly.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Just works!

*2025-12-13, version 3.0.75*

Fired it up after a year dormant. Doing a 12 hour pork butt. Connected and up and running in 30 seconds. Can’t help but think it’s cheating. No one needs to know :)
Select what you’re cooking and it suggests pit temps and internal temps. I’m now 20 miles from my BJ II monitoring the temps. Amazing.

### 5/5 — Extremely worthwhile controller!

*2023-08-25, version 3.0.61*

As a newbie when it comes to smoking meat, it has been very helpful having the Smartfire controller on the smoker. After some initial struggles to get it to connect to wifi, I got the app updated and it has worked like a dream ever since and has made smoking meat the easiest thing ever. Totally worth the money.

### 5/5 — Brilliant

*2023-05-21, version 3.0.61*

Brilliant App, some versions have had bugs but these have always been fixed. The online and Facebook community are fantastic for any issues and advice with the developer probably the most active in assistance of any app or software I’ve used.

My old V4 is still going strong, but when that finally dies I will get the new version Smartfire without even considering any other temp controller

### 5/5 — Indispensable

*2023-03-20, version 3.0.60*

Great product. Love it! Initial issue pairing but developer provided great support.

### 5/5 — Love this!

*2021-11-26, version 3.0.4*

Love this app/product! I’m always impressed at how flat it can keep the temps on my Kamado, even in the winter when snowing! Love that I can use the WiFi and go anywhere in my house and not worry about it disconnecting, and I can use the wireless probes!

The app just had a UI update which took me a minute to figure out , but it looks great and is pretty intuitive after playing around a bit.

### 5/5 — Best accessory to hold 225f

*2021-03-21, version 2.3.99*

I felt compelled to send in a review for the Smartfire. Not something I normally do, but this SF has freed me up to get on with my day once the meat is in. Holds 225f remarkably well, the app platform is solid and user friendly. Had a issue in the initial set up (probably my own doing) but no problem for Mark from SF. Got in touch via email, he replied with he’s direct mobile number and sorting it out in one phone call remotely from he’s location to my SF unit via the cloud, very impressed. Support an Australian product and just buy one, worth every dollar. I couldn’t recommend any more highly, you won’t regret it. Dean.

### 5/5 — Superb product and great family run team

*2020-11-17, version 2.3.95*

Effortlessly control your bbq and smoker pits. This really is set and forget for almost every bbq on the planet and really does produce amazing food.

### 5/5 — Great product and app

*2020-04-03, version 2.3.5*

Bought a Smartfire about 6 months to help get temperature under control in a Kamado Joe. Overall the unit has been flawless. Keeps temps on the Kamado exactly where I want them to be and ensures that I can monitor (and control) the unit from anywhere - as long as I have 4g connectivity in the phone.
Had been a great help for longer cooks

### 5/5 — This makes smoking a breeze

*2019-11-23, version 2.3.0*

This makes low and slow in a kamado ridiculously easy. Start your fire, set your temp, put the meat on, come back when it tells you it’s ready 6–12 hours later. (Ok, maybe some spritzing and wrapping at some point too)

### 5/5 — Essential accessory

*2019-05-31, version 2.1.41*

I bought the Smartfire to compliment my two Kamado Joes. Best decision ever!
Being able to monitor and set the temperature and see the meat reach and slowly push through the stall point has changed how I cook.
The rewards are obvious, delicious food that has the right internal temp and falls apart with the touch of a spoon.
I’ve tried so many different thermometers, and this has been the ultimate solution 😍
