Audio either sounds great or horrible. It won’t let me adjust gain levels leading to constant pops and snaps. The audio drops out constantly making me get creative with video edits, and even needing to redo shots. It could be great, but if you use an iPhone and need a mic just get a wireless lapel that comes with a Bluetooth receiver that plugs into your input jack on your phone. They’re 20 bucks on Amazon and you can even use the native camera app on your iPhone. No more retakes and no more messing with creative video and audio edits to fix bad sound quality. Wish I could like it, but after 4 months of weekly use I’m not impressed whatsoever. I can clean up phone mic audio better than I can fix these issues. Phones have 4K video now and can shoot pro quality shots, it’s time the audio matched. ### 3/5 — Can’t adjust the gain *2023-09-16, version 2.8.4* I like this app but I’ll have to stop using it because I can’t adjust the gain. The gain is greyed out so I can’t change it which results in distortion and a crackling sound when things get louder. I’ve tried contacting the company for help but no one replied. ### 2/5 — buggy ... good features but they don't work 🤷🏼‍♀️ *2023-05-27, version 2.8.4* I really want to like this app. There is a teleprompter option so you can read lines while directly looking at the camera but they are hard to input and hard to adjust. then there is a caption option. it almost works but not really. and then after spending lots of time fixing the captions, I try to download the video with captions and get a syntex error. soooo, it would be much better not to have this feature. i would have gone elsewhere for the captions that took ages to fix. also, never heard back from CS on the topic ### 4/5 — SmartMike+ *2022-03-11, version 2.8.3* Bought this mic and installed app tested I really like, if in future this app can be able do LIVE stream into FB & YouTube might be great, and I’ll share introduce to all friends about this. And the update is up to date so yea I’m confused ### 3/5 — Would love if you heard the count down *2021-10-11* I record a lot of my fitness videos with this app and I love the freedom it offers me. One thing that would be awesome is having a count down sound of some sort that lets me know that it’s about to record. I use the zoom view so I don’t see the count down as the phone is facing away from me. That would be awesome. Also the app randomly shuts down while recording because I am using the zoom view I don’t know. I have found myself thinking that I have recorded the whole workout and come to find out it stopped recording a long time ago. *So please add a countdown with sound! *please add a sound when the video stops recording! Thank you! ### 2/5 — Great mic, awful app *2021-08-30, version 2.8.2* I love the mic, but the video quality on the app is nowhere near good enough. Awful and grainy. Because it doesn’t work natively with other video apps, this is a problem. Also, how are the files so HUGE and such low quality at the same time? ### 1/5 — Twin mic mode never worked *2021-04-16, version 2.7.3* I own a technology company and am very accurate on testing and trouble reporting. Numerous trouble report get no action or I get pushed back to start by another person. Company appears to be better with hardware than software. Sending one mic back but will keep the other. Company needs a formal support case management system or at least maintain an email chain with one tech. ### 2/5 — Disappointed *2021-03-20, version 2.7.3* The audio mode works well. However, the video mode closes after the 3 second count. It stays on when the mic is not connected via BT. ### 4/5 — 1 hr recording w/ 2 mics: successful *2021-03-11* Reading previous negative reviews made me skeptical. However, I have had a great experience with the app/hardware so far. I just recorded an hour-long conversation with another person, each of us wearing our own SmartMike+... sound quality exceeded expectation - no distortion, popping, etc. Very happy with the product. One star left off for the extremely minimal documentation that shipped with the product. ### 2/5 — Thought this would be great! But underwhelmed *2021-03-01* The App needs to drop the recordings straight to iPhoto. I’m seriously bummed that it needs their software at all. The microphone should just pair to the device and use the devices recording mechanism like Camera and Voice Recording unless it’s better than what comes with the phone. But at the very least it should be able to drop the files straight to iPhoto just like the drone apps and so many other apps can already do. $165 dollarsShould at the very least buy you that no more of this drop to your file cloud or some other antiquated uncomfortable impossible way just drop the files straight to my iPhoto. ### 2/5 — Meh *2021-02-09* The mic itself works pretty well especially for the price. The app is horrible. If you create a product that is semi-professional (and it actually is) you want an app that goes with it. This one doesn’t. Since the mic doesn’t work with some app (iphone video recorder) or works poorly with others (the gain is always at the max with filmic pro), you HAVE to use it with the smartmike+ app. When it comes to sound it’s ok (as in not great but good enough) but the video side of the app is abysmal: -no white balance control. -every time you switch lens you have to reactivate (on then off then on) the stabilization or your footage won’t be stabilized. -exposure control can’t be more basic -focus control as well. -no peaking -no zebras - vu meters only show up when you are recording - etc... Basically you get a poor version of the iphone video app. Overall good concept, not a great build but it can do the job in some situations (I’m thinking ITV in a car for exemple.). If the app was good this combo would be brilliant. Not yet. 🤞 ### 1/5 — App keeps crashing *2021-01-26, version 2.6.3* I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app several times. In my settings it says it’s connected... as soon as I open the app it crashes before I am even able to do anything. I have reset my phone several times as well nothing seems to be working. We lost all our work, thinking that it was recording through the app all lights on, we even downloaded the latest app version and still did not work. Now the 2 mics I have are useless and I feel like I wasted time and money on this app. Please update to support more IOS updates and newer phone models ### 1/5 — 4K doesn’t work - Broken App *2023-01-08* Have had this for two years now, and the biggest problems are the following: 1) You need to run this mic through an app, rather than it just being plug and play after connecting the mic through Bluetooth 2) When you select 4k within the app, all of the sudden the picture becomes neon green and filled with static Given that it’s been two years, and the company seems to have an automated bot responding to the feedback on here, I would not bank on either of these issues ever getting fixed. Nope it’s a microphone and a headset which jacks everything up. But when an App doesn’t work at all no matter what you do, I think it’s the proper thing to do. I also wrote a one star review on Amazon for the actual SmartMic lapel mic. If you can’t use a product because it doesn’t work, it is worthless. It’s that simple. And yea, I allowed the App all the required permissions, un-installed and re-installed several times, made sure it was paired to my iPhone’s Bluetooth, etc. All to no avail. I also looked for their customer support info on their website, but could not find anything. SUGGESTION TO DEVELOPER: If you can’t produce an App that works with your product, how about providing us with a list of competing Apps that will work? At least then we might be able to use the product. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Perfect App for Actors *2022-05-31* I use this app for my self-tape auditions and I love it! I’ve been using it for a year now after my husband got me a lav mic that supports this app. The audio is impeccable and it picks up my voice over the hustle and bustle noises of NYC during filming. HOWEVER, the in-app camera filters (smoothing, lighting, etc) that work in real time are amazing!! I can completely adjust the visual tone for dramatic vs comedic self-tapes with just one swipe! It gives my tapes such a professional look while being completely user friendly. They also added a teleprompter feature recently, by far the best teleprompter app I’ve used ever. It has so many speed, size and screen placement options. Your self-tape set up is everything when it comes to booking work and this app single handedly solves several technical challenges.
