It is an excellent alternative to the smart playlist capabilities of iTunes, since this actually works. Recently I had a very minor issue with the app. The developer identified and fixed the issue quickly. Great support! **Developer response:** Bug fix (v12.1.5) is on its way. When now playing song is last in the list it crashes. Please use SmartPlaylist support mail address to report bugs (Menu > Help ...). Kind regards ### 4/5 — Timer needed *2019-05-18* Please add count down timer to stop playing after xxx minutes **Developer response:** Hello You can put a limit of say 30 minutes or so in „Mix”, then it will stop playing at the end of the list after (about) 30 minutes. Or you can set a normal timer for xxx minutes and select "Stop playback" as end action (instead of an alarm sound, go to the very bottom of the list) Kind regards ### 5/5 — You can also rate not playing now tracks *2019-05-04* showing rating of each track in playlist and possibility to rate not playing now track is great also customizable playlist fields like add or remove comment field is awesome. Just might make my own app like this. ### 5/5 — Nothing More Powerful than this app *2018-11-13* November 2018: I am wondering where did my older review has gone. Anyway, there is nothing more powerful than this app to find music from your library, and ability to sort by multiple parameters. Of course, this has a bit of learning curve, but if you are passionate about rating and finding music other than just by artist/album etc. in completely customized way that suits your mood and desire, this is perhaps the only app. I am surprised that almost all music playing app still rely on static playlist, while this app produces dynamic playlist on the fly unlike any other. Enjoy! But learn first how to use it. ### 3/5 — Great idea but interface is too hard *2018-09-08, version v11.1.2* This interface feels like it was written by somebody who spends the whole day writing SQL queries. While there’s a lot of power here, it would take something like a short cuts/Workflow style design overhaul to make it useful for most people. Like if it said could say “get all music” at the top, then you could drag in a filter of “from a decade” and choose 90s then drag in a filter “except one genre” and choose “electronica” - I know it’s a lot but at least people wouldn’t give up after looking at a bazillion options. ### 3/5 — Buggy? *2018-04-13* Since installing the latest version, my Recently Played playlist in iTunes doesn’t update. Otherwise, functionality remains solid, if not precisely intuitive. It replicates the functioning of smart play lists on desktop 's iTunes. The way I use it most: - I use play counts to keep track of what I've listened from the music on iPhone. So if I transfer 100 tracks to iPhone with a play count of 0, I create a smart play list that only includes tracks with 0 play count. Which means that each time I listen to a song, it will exit the list. With the normal random you end up listening several times to the same song and never know which are the tracks that never come up. - on certain playlists I limit to 3 songs from same album. It gives more variety and at the time you have a better feel of the album than with the normal random that switches album after playing only one track. - finally you can rate the song, which means that when listening to new music I can separate within the app what I am going to keep from what I will delete. Conclusion: SmartPlayList helps me listen to a growing collection of more than 35000 songs, all of which I listen over a period of 4 years. ### 5/5 — Smart playlists on your iDevice *2017-05-26, version 10.1.1* I have been using this through several releases. This is a great app if you like to create smart playlists based upon things such as star rating or last played date (as I do). You can also tell a smart playlist to also include or exclude the contents of another smart playlist. This is very hand for creating complex queries to generate mixes based upon many conditions. With iTunes deprecating the star rating, this is a must have for me. ### 5/5 — PERFECT *2017-05-04, version 10.1.1* UPDATE 05/2017 I still use this app almost daily. Recently got a new car that supports Apple CarPlay and this app once again shines. Apple still cannot seem to get its shuffle function in the Music app to act like a true shuffle that doesn't repeat songs ever other day. That's where Smart Playlist and it's brilliant query capability comes in! Get in the car, hit my filter that removes all songs that have been played in the past couple days and voila! Perfect fix. UPDATE 06/2016 Extra playlist slots added? App keeps getting better and better. All of my prior review comments still stand and I'm still using it almost daily. Don't hesitate to buy!! 👍🏻 UPDATE 04/2016 Another great update! I still use this app just about every day to listen to music at work and in the car. Powerful query tools make it really simple to quickly generate playlists based on just about any criteria. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 UPDATE 10/2015 Just updated to a new iPhone 6S+ and Smart Playlist updated along with it. Thanks for the iOS9 support! I still use this app almost daily to help manage playing my huge on-device library. Love being able to run queries against my collection to build playlists on the fly. I don't ever want to be without this app! Original review: This is something I've been looking for for YEARS. I wish I had found it sooner. For anyone who has a large music library and uses the shuffle feature has probably noticed that your I-device seems to avoid large chunks of your collection. With this app you can easily tell the music app to play songs that haven't been played for a month.. 2 months.. for example. Include or exclude artists, genres.. limit by number of plays.. number of skips.. it's almost endless. Warning, though, this app is very advanced feature-wise so if you're not familiar with querying be sure to look at the documentation for help. ### 4/5 — Excellent app, although needs a little polish *2017-04-06, version 10.1.1* I really love how much granular control Smart Playlist give you over creation of playlists. I've got a pretty extensive library and the ability to define playlists on the fly using pretty much any bit of metadata stored about any song in my iTunes library as a criterion has been great for parties. Having said that, the user interface is a little overwhelming and cryptic and could use a little polish (although I am not sure what I would recommend). But in general, if you like to create playlists on any criteria without having to go into iTunes, Smart Playlist is a great app to consider! ### 5/5 — Fantastic! *2016-11-22, version 10.1* ...in every way possible, other than being able to quickly indicate a favorite song (such as with Apple's restricted Love rating). Explore how you can use this app for a week, and you'll come to love how you can manipulate your music library on the go. ### 5/5 — Great app for displaying metadata of songs *2016-11-14* This is a fantastic app. The playlist features are very nice, but this app sets itself apart from other similar utilities in the way that it extracts and displays metadata for songs in my library (play count, skip count, etc). By listing individual play counts for every song (and allowing me to sort on it), it allows me to easily see which songs I am playing the most, which songs within a given album get played the most, etc. There are a LOT of features within the app that allow you to customize how the songs get displayed and sorted. The developer has given the user a great deal of control here. The amount of customizability can seem a little overwhelming at first, but the default settings allow it to work right out of the box. And then playing with the settings and rules, you can do so much. One thing that is particularly cool is the ability to do multi-level sorts. For example, you can sort the songs by artist, and then within each artist sort by album, and within each album sort by play count! So great! Well done. ### 5/5 — The features Apple Music should have *2016-11-12, version 10.0* It's ridiculous that Apple Music on iOS is so neutered. And that smart playlists in iTunes are so limited. This app completely solves these problems. Essential. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Not as good as it looks *2024-12-18* There are a lot of filters but it’s very limited. Having only a single value per filter is bad design. I want to sort by date added and load within a date range but that’s not possible. Waste of money. **Developer response:** SmartPlaylist always/only works with date ranges. You can work with how many hours, days, weeks, months or years ago. You can use the operators < (less than), = (equal, within) or > (more than) x hours/days/weeks/months/years ago. Thus, you can for example say Added < 3 months ago (i.e. date range between now and 3 months ago, excluding all added 3 or more months ago). Added = 1,2,3 years ago (i.e. between 1 and 4 years ago). Added > 12 hours ago (excluding all added in the last 12 hours). ### 1/5 — Was a great app now abandoned *2021-09-23* This was my go to app for managing my music playlist. However the developer stopped updating and now after last 2 Apple iOS 14 updates now cause the app to just crash every time I try to load a list. Hopefully the developer will revisit and make fixes as this app allowed you to manage your loaded music in various custom lists with many options for filtering and sorting. **Developer response:** Please activate "Share With App Developers" in the "Privacy" > "Analytics & Improvements" settings. This might give me a clue about this crash on your device. Waste of time and money 0 stars! ### 1/5 — Needs saving option *2011-09-26, version 4.12* Yes, it creates a good playlist similar to iTunes smartplaylist, but it lacks the option to save the playlist, which kind of defeats the purpose for me. I like the option of deleting songs from a playlist and the lack of this feature, as well as the confusing interface makes it almost useless for my intent. ### 1/5 — Stupidest app *2011-06-11, version 4.11* I hate this app its ridiculous. Never spend your money on it! It makes no sense. I put in the composer and nothing comes up! Great app. Highly recommended. ### 5/5 — I love it! *2020-11-05* Being able to create smart playlists on my phone is incredible, especially since you can’t create smart playlists on Macs anymore because of the lack of iTunes. I’ve tried a couple of different smart playlist apps but this is the only one that has the flexibility and scope of options that lets me create exactly the playlists I want. The UI is a little weird but it’s not difficult once you get the hang of it. If you want to create iTunes style smart playlists on your phone, I HIGHLY recommend this app! ### 5/5 — Simply the Best *2020-09-21* I have been using the App Store since it debuted, and this is the first time I have ever written a review. That is because this app is so good and so unsung that I want to do what I can to help the developer have more success. There is no other playlist tool available for the iPhone that is this powerful, this full featured, and this customizable. On top of that, the price is more than fair and there is no subscription, which is increasingly rare. The one thing I found lacking in Smartplaylist was the ability to save a smartplaylist as a playlist in the Music app. And now the developer has added that feature. He could not be making much money from this, yet he keeps improving it anyway.
