## What is Sol?

What time is sunset today? Or sunrise tomorrow? When is the "magic hour" next March 20 in Paris? With Sol, you can check times and get reminders of solar events, at home or while traveling! Great for everyone looking to plan activities based on sunlight. Use it to remind you to walk the dog before dark, get up with the sun, or find golden hour time for that perfect photo.

Sol: Sun Clock is the Swiss-army knife of sunlight tools with a design inspired by the simplicity of the sundial. Use it to plan your day, guide natural sleep cycles, get the best light for outdoor photography, make sure animals or kids are safe inside before dark, or to map out the best times to go running or fishing.

* Be in tune: Sol will tell you when the golden hour is, how much sunlight you have left in the day or what time the next sunrise occurs.

* Look to the future, travel around the world: Sol lets you find sunlight information for any date, anywhere on earth.

* Find solar midnight and solar noon, and all three twilight (dawn and dusk) periods: astronomical twilight, nautical twilight, and civil twilight. Keep tabs on the next solstice and equinox.

* Reminders and Alarms: Use Sol as a natural alarm clock that you can set to any event (like sunset, golden hour or solar noon), and the alarm or reminder time will adjust gradually as the days change with the seasons.

* Automatic Location: Sol not only calculates the amount of daylight and sunrise and sunset times, but does so for any location in the world (both Northern and Southern hemispheres) by using your device's GPS... no network connection required.

* Other locations: Optionally, use the built-in map to choose any location in the world by moving the pin, or search using the name of any city.

* Optional location-aware alarms. Sol knows when you change with your location; and as you travel it will adjust any alarms you set relative to sunrise and sunset times. Create alarms for multiple locations around the world.

* Detailed almanac information: Useful information about the day's length, sun's azimuth and elevation, equinoxes and solstices, and a friendly glossary that explains all the terms.

Note: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. However, GPS runs in the background ONLY if you have set location-aware alarms.

### 5/5 — Best app for local solar measurements

*2026-07-03, version 5.1.5*

I love SOL! I had it on my iPhone for many years until it was discontinued. Now only on my iPad, and it is excellent!
Intuitive and informative data about the current status of the Sun. Best thing I like is changing the location and observing the Sun and how it appears much different. You can also time travel and see what the Sun will be like for any date past or present. Cool!

### 5/5 — Still using this app after more than 10 years‼️

*2026-05-31, version 5.1.5*

Favorite feature: set alarm for best time to go for a hike. Feature request: shadow of gnomon should indicate an approximate sundial effect. Recently learned: You need to swipe the area under the date to show more info. Double-tap that to start or start a newsfeed animation.

### 5/5 — Great Alarms & Good UI

*2026-05-11, version 5.1.5*

I like to be outside around sunrise and sunset every day so with its alarms you can offset to solar events it’s great.

### 5/5 — Arctic Day Light

*2026-03-23, version 5.1.5*

Sol Sun Clock is an invaluable resource for my life in the Arctic. Day light changes radically from winter’s twenty one hours of darkness to summer’s twenty four hours of direct sunlight. Knowing the times of sunrise and sunset is critical for photographic interests as well as knowing what light can be expected through each day of the year. The Sol Sun Clock is the most frequently used app of all apps in my iPhone. Thank you for your support and service. AL7MI (Amateur Radio Station Call Sign)

### 5/5 — Perfect & Simple

*2026-02-24*

I’ve been using this app for about 15 years, at first for timing photography during the golden hour, and now also for making sure I’m or there in the fresh air closer to midday for a healthy regulated circadian rhythm.

### 5/5 — Intuitive and just works

*2026-02-20, version 5.1.5*

I wish it had UVB rise and set times (40 degrees) kind of like the golden hour times. Golden hour maxes out at 20 degrees so it can’t be used for this the way it’s programmed.

I also wish it had widgets.

Other than that it’s one of the very best apps out there.

I have to use a combination of Sunrise Sunset app, SolarWatch app, Daylight % app, Sun Exposure app, and this app, to get all the data I need.

### 5/5 — This app rules

*2025-09-26, version 5.1.5*

This app has been a constant on my iPhone for over 10 years and I love it

### 5/5 — J’adore!

*2025-09-23, version 5.1.5*

### 5/5 — Long Time Quality

*2025-08-11, version 5.1.5*

For years, I’ve used this app to plot daylight and nighttime hours as well as the time in between. I’ve also taken many screen shots of the app in various states to regale friends. I really hope the publisher will continue to update the app … but I know nothing is forever. I would gladly pay to continue to have this app in my library. Thanks, Juggleware!

### 5/5 — One of my favorite apps of all time

*2025-06-12, version 5.1.5*

Easy to use, simple, and straightforward, and I’m surprised at all the uses I have found for it – – between travel planning, photography, and just organizing my day outdoors.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 5.1.5 — 2025-02-05

Due to a bug in Apple's iOS 18, in some locations the month in the Date Picker dialog could be a month off. Version 5.1.5 circumvents the bug for iOS 18 users until it can be properly fixed by Apple. We also fixed some external links that were not opening from within the app, and linked to our new social media account on Bluesky.

### 5.1.4 — 2023-06-20

1) Fix to popup window toolbar appearance issues switching between Dark Mode and Standard (Light) Mode.
2) iPad version now has black main toolbar like iPhone.
3) Fix to Tutorial on iPad.
4) Fix to bug where notification sometimes showed empty time string.

### 5.1.3 — 2023-05-16

Minor improvements.

### 5.1.2 — 2021-11-17

Despite our best efforts in 5.1.1, users who had upgraded to iOS15 were still occasionally having their preferences zapped. We have made substantial additions to the code to try to protect users against any data loss. The app now keeps multiple backups of its settings file, and in addition, users may choose to manually back up their settings. (If you have had issues in previous versions, we recommend installing a fresh copy of the app by deleting your previous version first.)

### 5.1.1 — 2021-10-22

Fixed the disappearing settings (including custom alarms) bug that was still affecting some users, as well as the slightly clipped earth graphic on some iPhones.
