### 5/5 — Great program for surgical logs!!

*2022-02-09*

This is an awesome program to capture surgical logs. I was A bit leery to begin with, but the program has delivered! I would highly recommend it!

**Developer response:** Thank you for the nice review. Please get in touch by email if you want to suggest ways I could make new users less 'leery'! It's probably the thing I find most difficult to do and while I have lots of information on the website, it might need rewording too! Thanks again. Paul.

### 5/5 — Case tracker, almost perfect

*2022-01-19*

The best case tracker that I've found out there. It's affordable, synchronizes well across my devices and has a lot of customization available. There are a few little annoyances, but because I can't tell if they're just user error instead of actual design issues, I won't bother mentioning them. If you're looking for an inexpensive and user friendly case logging app, this seems to fit the bill.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the great review, I appreciate it... however, please get in touch with the little annoyances because the only way I know what annoys my users *specifically* is if they let me know!

You can email me directly in the app via Settings -> Help & Support -> Email Support

We can see if what annoys you is a bug or just something I've not implemented very well!

Cheers, Paul

### 5/5 — Fantastic log book

*2021-07-05*

This is a great ap. It is well polished, aesthetic, intuitive and lives up to its excellent reputation. It has clearly had a lot of thought and care put into its creation. Thanks for making all our lives easier!

**Developer response:** Thanks for the wonderful feedback and support. I’m busy working on improvements which will take advantage of iOS 15 later in the year to hopefully make it even better. 🤓

### 5/5 — Phenomenal

*2020-10-26*

Clearly designed by a practicing anaesthetist. Very user friendly. The main benefit for my use case, it halves my admin work. I was needing to make billing sheets for cases, as well as wanting to log my cases for personal audit, and in case of audit from other sources (such as Medicare). With this I can log my case, and it will generate a billing sheet for me to attach to my billing software. Not to mention a single purchase for BOTH iOS and Mac, no subscription rubbish or in app purchases, just fantastic. So impressed. Any thoughts of a charting app similar to OSAEMR? Or for a Windows port? Thank you for designing this.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the great review, I really appreciate that you took the time to write it.

I had considered adding a charting component but I decided against. There are others doing great work in this space and I couldn't do half the job they're doing. It would also increase the complexity of Somnus dramatically and troubleshooting would be a lot of work (there are a lot of hardware I/O complexities which are well above my skillset). I fear I'd make a meal of it! There is the ability to add 'Clinical Photos' to cases, which I do sometimes use to attach a screenshot or photo of the clinical record, but I don't do it for every case as it's a lot of data. If you print a 'Case Report' rather than a 'Billing Report' these images will be included in the PDF.

As for Windows - I have no interest in this, for the same reasons I won't create an Android version - it's far too much extra work and the fragmented hardware ecosystem makes it difficult to maintain parity across devices, let alone platforms. I also am a pretty novice coder so I'd have to learn from scratch how to do it. That might make for a very ugly version of Somnus!

Developing in iOS is 'easy' in comparison. I know where I stand with hardware capabilities, users are almost always on the latest iOS (or macOS) so I can make use of new technologies all while knowing that data is safe and the user experience is consistent.

But thank you for the suggestions. I love the feedback and I'm always thinking of ways to make Somnus better - I use it every day for my private & public work which is where most of my ideas come from (usually when something annoys me!)

Paul

### 5/5 — This is what I’ve been looking for

*2020-07-19, version 6.7.3*

As a full-time nurse anesthesiologist working in an independent practice with 16 others, we do a lot of cases every day. Since we are fee for service I like to track all of my cases as well as other services like blocks and central lines in order to make sure billing is accurate. This app is so amazing. It covers all the things I wanted and allows me to get any data points I want.

This app would be great for people in training To track cases or establish clinicians like myself who need to keep track and enjoy keeping track of everything I do for my patients.

You won’t go wrong with this one. The Developer is a physician anesthesiologist himself and replies immediately with questions and answers. The great thing is you can guarantee he understands exactly what you’re looking for!

**Developer response:** Thanks for the wonderful review, Mike, and thanks for using Somnus. I’m glad it makes your life easier - that was certainly the intention! Always open to new ideas and features (without feature bloat) provided it’s within my fairly simply coding skill set! Cheers from Australia, Paul

### 5/5 — Versatile, SImple and Useful

*2020-04-15, version 6.4.2*

I had been looking for a decent logbook app for a while and this one is by far the most useful and user friendly one I have come across so far.
It is easy to put data in, it syncs nicely across my I devices - so if I forget one, I can use the other seamlessly.
I can take clinical photos, or photograph the anaesthetic chart if I want and I can audit my logbook as I wish when I wish.
Had a problem with exporting files recently, so I emailed the developer and within 12 hours the bug was solved! Have never had support like that with an app before.
This is a must if you are an anaesthetist or anaesthetic trainee in Australasia and I imagine it would be pretty handy in other countries as well.
Nice work guys - this one is a winner.

### 5/5 — How an anaesthesia logbook should be done.

*2020-04-04*

Terrific app with seamless syncing between iOS & Mac App. iOS excellent for in theatre logging and Mac App for list preparation, billing and reviewing cases. Developer provides quick and helpful responses to all enquiries. Will be excellent app regardless of location but Medicare Item Nos makes this great for Australian Anaesthetists. Can also be used by trainees & supervisors.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the wonderful review. Kind regards, Paul.

### 5/5 — Somnus is where it’s at!

*2019-07-21*

Intuitive interface, beautifully designed and intelligently executed, Somnus is the brainchild of an Australian anaesthetist.

I’ve been using digital anaesthetics logbooks for more than 10 years, and Somnus for the past 16 months. It is certainly the most user-friendly logbook for anaesthetics-related cases that I’ve come across in recent years. Somnus can also be modified with a number of user-defined fields & parameters, for example, to keep track of out-of-theatre cases such as aeromedical retrievals, ICU or ED cases, MRI or endoscopy suite cases.

The summary stats are very interesting to look back through, and the export function is perfect for providing a logbook summary to credentialing authorities when required. I have not needed to use the Medicare item number (billing) component so I can’t comment on its functionality.

Paul is also very responsive to suggestions for additional features or modifications, not to mention fixing bugs in a timely manner.

**Developer response:** Thank you very much for the lovely review - this sort of feedback (and bug reports & suggestions) gives me a real boost and makes it all worthwhile!

### 5/5 — Excellent app, great user interface, intelligent functionality

*2019-03-29*

This app is ideal not only for registrar training logs, and just keeping an eye on your practice, but also for private billing since it now handles Medicare item numbers and generates a useful report with a cost estimate based on your own individualized unit rate. This can be sent to your billing company via a simple PDF generation step. There are also useful graphics indicating your practice makeup, type of Anaesthesia etc and you can use it to track any complications as well.

In a world where medical software seems to be written to make your clinical workload worse than ever, this app is a pleasant exception!

**Developer response:** Thank you for the wonderful review!

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2018-12-23*

Great up, well set out and aesthetically pleasing. Paul is always happy to help with enquiries and continues to work towards making a seamless app for Anaesthetists. Great job Paul!

**Developer response:** Thanks for the kind words!

### 5/5 — A 4star rate

*2018-07-15*

I am using this app for three days now and I found it useful. There is scope for a better UI . I cannot find an option for a print which would have been wonderful.
This is it for now and would not be quiet to add as I use it more.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the review. The main reason I kept the exporting to simple CSV is so that people can choose how they format & print their data themselves.

It’s almost impossible to agree on a format layout for printing that suits everyone’s needs. Having said that, I’m going to try and incorporate a PDF summary page which you can print or export) if you wish.

As for a new UI, I’m working hard on it and hope to have a much nicer UI/UX available for version 3 in the coming months (probably after iOS 12 is released) - as well as many other improvements.

Send me an email if you want to suggest specific changes. I can also give you a sneak peek of what I’ve done so far. Cheers, Paul.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — New subscription!

*2025-04-20*

I’m really disappointed after purchasing a full access to this app , it’s updated to yearly subscription, it’s unfair!

**Developer response:** Your data is not locked behind a subscription, so you can export all your data to use in another app of your choosing at any time. I’ve made sure of that.

I’m sorry you feel the modest fee is not worth paying, especially as a medical professional. The single licence fee was unsustainable for me so it was either this or I remove Somnus from the App Store entirely.

Details and explanation are in the FAQ on the website.

Kind regards,

Paul

### 1/5 — New update broke app

*2025-04-01*

It was great until the latest update. It removed my paid access and no longer can use “restore purchase” option as it’s broken. No response from devs yet.

**Developer response:** I’m sorry you’re having issues and I’d like to help sort it out for you but I can’t as you have either not contacted me or not read my reply.

I reply to every email I receive within 24 hours. Not sure how I can reply to ‘nothing’.

If you recently purchased (ie since late 2024) Somnus before I made it FREE for two months before moving to the subscription model, please let me know and see the website for details.

I also note that you’re not actually on the latest update (which is currently 10.0.3).

### 1/5 — Purchased One-Time Payment

*2025-03-31*

Another app NOT grandfathering original app purchasers. I will not be recommending this app anymore. This developer should have recognized that the original purchasers are the ones that put money in his pocket. Smh.

**Developer response:** I hear your frustration, and I genuinely appreciate that you were an early supporter of Somnus. I make almost no worthy income from this venture.

When I first released the app over six years ago, it was a one-time purchase, and many users paid just $30 (many much less less) for unlimited access, updates, and support. Since then, I’ve added countless features, maintained the app, answered every support request personally, and continued improving it in my spare time - all while working full-time as an Anaesthetist.

At some point, to keep the app sustainable, I had to move to a subscription model. I didn’t make that decision lightly. Subscription will hopefully allow me to keep supporting and evolving Somnus well into the future without feeling like it's a burden.

Even now, users can still fully access and export their data without subscribing—the subscription only applies to adding new data. For those who bought the app just before the change, I’ve even offered a free year of subscription.

I understand this model may not suit everyone, but I hope people can see the value that’s gone into the app over the years, and the need to support it moving forward. Thank you again for using Somnus, and for your support in the early days.

### 4/5 — Need to enter diagnosis

*2023-10-22*

A really good UI, convinient
Need to enter diagnosis or atleast to write indication for surgery.
Kindly try to update that in the app.
Thank you and great work

**Developer response:** Thank you for the review. You can certainly do this with a Patient Personal List of your choosing. You could have a list called ‘Indications’ and then create items in this list. They will then appear on exported reports, including Case Reports (PDF). Cheers, Paul

### 4/5 — Change imperial units to metric ones

*2023-05-02, version 8.7.1*

How do I do this?

### 4/5 — App suddenly started crashing- rectified within few hours!

*2018-08-28*

I was a fan of this app. Helped me keep my logs everyday. But now after update. App is crashing every time i try to use it.
Please look into it and make it like before.

Thanks for the update. 😃
Have become a huge fan of this app after the update which clears the bug within few days! 😃

**Developer response:** This was fixed within 24 hours of the release - but I do apologise for that. A bug in my copy of Xcode injected some old code, which I quickly removed.

Instead of the 2-star review which I think is a little unfair, perhaps it would have been better to contact me directly? I’m just one guy here. I respond to emails almost immediately and I fixed the bug within a few hours. I only had to wait 12 hours for Apple to approve it.

EDIT: Thanks for changing your rating 👍🏻🙂

### 5/5 — Ideal

*2026-07-10*

If only all medical tech and software was designed with this level of convenience and user-first common sense. A remarkably well-designed app with a dedicated and responsive designer.

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for the kind review! 🤓

### 5/5 — Glitch in the new Update

*2025-04-16*

Somnus has been working wonderfully so far until the recent updates. Having trouble with logging patients, disappearing screens and needing to get out of the app time to time for checking jew patient entry. I hope this can be fixed as soon as possible. This is an amazing app, really useful. Want the glitch gone please.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the review and feedback. I have run into a few little glitches that some users on iPhone are also experiencing and it IS annoying, I agree. I'm doing my best to rectify this and v10.0.7 should address them. I've been working on this non-stop for the past few weeks. Thanks for your patience.

### 5/5 — Fantastic App

*2023-12-16*

Somnus has changed the way I record my cases. Intuitive, user-friendly, easy to keep track of what I’ve done, helps me if I have to review a list to give a trainee my feedback and helps with billing!
A no-brainer for every Australian anaesthetist, from trainees to FANZCAs!

**Developer response:** Thank you very much for the great review - I really appreciate it! If you have any suggestions for improvement, please get in touch. Cheers, Paul.

### 5/5 — Finally something that works!

*2023-05-24*

After years of fruitless searching, someone has finally developed a worthwhile app for tracking anesthesia cases. The setup is simple and the use is intuitive. Export a slick case report for credentialing? No problem! This app has saved me hours of formulating the data for tracking case averages. I give it my highest recommendation!

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for the wonderful review, I really appreciate it. Let me know if I can do anything to improve things 🤓 Kind regards, Paul

## Most praised reviews (6 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Absolutely the best app for case logs!

*2023-05-22*

I’ve been using your app for the past 5 years now and highly recommend it to my Nurse Anesthetist colleagues.

To only question I have is downloading case logs from a selected time period. Can you tell me how I can download just the last year of case logs instead of the past 5 years of case?

**Developer response:** Hi Robert! Thank you very much for the lovely review, I really appreciate it!

The easiest way to download a specific day, week, month or year of cases is to select that range on the Dashboard, then either view the Cases by tapping on that line in the section below the Case Cards OR simply tap the export/share button. It will export all those cases for you in one file.

You can also create a Search on the All Data screen to specify a precise date range, as well as add other search terms to filter your cases.

Get in touch by email if you need further help and I’ll reply as soon as I can. Kind regards, Paul.

### 5/5 — Error

*2023-05-06, version 8.7.1*

Sorry for the question, took me a while to find the conversion tab. Therefore I´ve upgraded the stars to 5 of them.
Have a good day from New Zealand

### 5/5 — aus anaesthetic logbook

*2023-03-10*

thank you martin for a fantastic app. i use it every day and recommend it to all my colleagues

**Developer response:** Thank you very much for the review. I really appreciate it. I’ll continue to do my best to improve Somnus for years to come. Thanks again, Paul.

### 5/5 — Excellent app

*2023-02-20*

Clearly developed by someone who uses the app, which makes it a pleasure to use. Easy instructions on uploading previous log book cases, case recording is simple and I love the personal lists for adding learning points / drugs utilised.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the excellent review, I really appreciate it. If you have any questions or requests, etc. don't hesitate to contact me in future. Thanks again. Paul.

### 5/5 — Pretty nice interface and functionality …

*2023-02-07*

… and I like it. Occasional crashes when reopening a case from that day that has already been saved. Some random crashes. Happy I bought it. Please keep on the bug fixes. Thanks!

**Developer response:** Thank you for the review and feedback, I really appreciate it. If you have time and you find some crashes are easy to reproduce, please get in touch with me via the email in the app and I’ll help get to the bottom of it.

Some crashes are sometimes out of my control but most of them (even if rare) are probably my fault! 😬

Thanks again. 🙂

### 5/5 — committed developer - worth a look

*2022-03-13*

had some problems getting hang of the software. developer actually reached out to me personally! bravo.

**Developer response:** Edited: Thanks for updating your review, Dave, and thank you for getting in touch so I could help address some of the issues you'd been having. For anyone else reading this, please do know that I respond to emails (and reviews) and will do my best to help improve things for you (and others). Kind regards, Paul
