## What is Soranagi?

Plan Milky Way views and Sun/Moon alignments with your place, time and gear.

YOUR CAMERA, YOUR FRAME
Use Sony, Canon, Nikon or OM SYSTEM presets, or enter sensor size and actual focal length. Try 14/24/35 mm, wide-to-telephoto views, portrait orientation and supported converters. Compare gear A/B at one place/time/aim; share it with sky, full-screen, AR and planner views. The 15 mm diagonal fisheye preview is approximate.

STAR MOTION AND FOREGROUND FOCUS
For a fixed tripod without tracking, choose pixel or sensor-mm motion limits across the frame or its central region. Estimate shutter times from recorded image dimensions or megapixels. Enter working aperture, foreground distance and a blur circle for thin-lens infinity, hyperfocal or manual-focus guidance.

PANORAMAS AND SCOUTING PHOTOS
Plan one rectilinear panorama row: azimuth, elevation, sweep, shared spherical area and exposure/setup/rest times. Inspect directions, timing, sampled centerline gaps and twilight. Stitch with your own software.
Overlay future sky positions on a photo from the same viewpoint. Manually set its original FOV, direction, roll and crop; move time with a slider. HEIC/HEIF support depends on the device decoder, without external conversion. Photos/calibration stay local; undisplayable saved originals remain.

COMPARE PLACES AND FIND AN ARCH
Compare three candidates at one UTC instant or their selected local nights. Inspect Moon, darkness, Galactic Center and terrain. Search sampled arch times by centerline height, direction and Moon criteria. Darkness information works where the Galactic Center never rises.

SUN, MOON AND BACKGROUND TERRAIN
Search alignments using subject dimensions or a summit point, from a fixed viewpoint or within 20 km of a subject. Check selected candidates against coarse terrain out to 100 km, including mountains beyond the subject. Inspect partial/whole-disc exposure, changes within ±30 minutes and 0.1–20 m viewpoint shifts. Conservative bands show user-assumed position/height/width errors, not measured GPS accuracy or guaranteed shooting times. Check access and footing on site.

OFFICIAL WEATHER AND AURORA
Manually load NOAA Kp/short-range OVATION, ECCC nearby-city reports or JMA regional forecasts. Retain original English/French or Japanese text, region/city, issue/target times and missing/stale labels. Japan offers automatic region lookup or manual selection. Automatic lookup stops near map boundaries; manual viewpoint membership is unverified. These are regional references. Out-of-period selected times remain unknown: current reports are not forecasts for later travel dates. NOAA colors are model values, not local visibility probabilities or shooting-success forecasts.

TAKE YOUR PLAN WITH YOU
Keep sky charts, AR, sunrise/sunset, lunar phase, twilight and existing Milky Way tools. Japan, Banff/Lake Louise and Yellowknife terrain and bilingual guides are bundled. Calculations and local records work offline; Web users explicitly save terrain regions and test offline before travel.
Save plans, notes and photos; export JSON backups/calendar events and schedule local iOS reminders. The online guide is free. Version/content IDs distinguish loaded, published Web and offline information, including manual-only updates; no automatic update or full-file verification.

No automatic cloud sync. Weather/maps need connectivity: ECCC receives a coordinate-derived search area, JMA receives region codes, and external maps receive chosen coordinates. Photos are not sent to weather services.

Finite samples and idealized optics/terrain cannot guarantee pinpoint stars, every alignment or visibility. Brightness, lens rendering, nearby trees/buildings and clouds are not simulated. Fisheye excludes motion/focus/panorama calculations. No automatic photo calibration, occlusion, stitching or camera control.

Never view the Sun directly. Use a purpose-built solar filter over the lens front and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 16.2.0 — 2026-09-12

16.2.0

• Added purpose-based entry points for wide-angle nightscapes, Sun/Moon landscapes, panoramas and scouting photos.
• Compare wide, normal and telephoto framing with representative Sony, Canon, Nikon and OM SYSTEM presets or custom gear. Try 14/24/35 mm, portrait orientation and gear A/B, and share saved equipment with sky, full-screen, AR and planner views.
• Estimate fixed-tripod stellar motion using pixels or sensor-mm criteria, across the frame or a central region. Foreground focus uses a separate working-aperture and blur-circle estimate.
• Plan a single panorama row: count, rotation, spherical overlap, exposure/setup/rest timing, sampled Galactic-equator coverage and twilight.
• Manually align future sky positions with a photo from the same viewpoint. Move time and save the original photo, calibration and crop locally. HEIC/HEIF depends on the device decoder, without external conversion; undisplayable saved originals are retained.
• Compare up to three candidates at a shared UTC instant or each place's local night; check terrain at the chosen instant and search sampled arch times by height and direction.
• For selected Sun/Moon candidates, inspect background terrain, partial/whole-disc exposure, changes within 30 minutes either side and framing shifts over a few metres. Conservative bands show user-assumed position/height/width errors, not measured GPS accuracy or guaranteed shooting times.
• Added NOAA Kp/short-range OVATION mapping, ECCC nearby-city observations/forecasts and original JMA regional forecasts. Japan supports automatic region lookup or manual selection. Automatic lookup stops near map boundaries; manual region membership is unverified. Missing, stale or out-of-period selected times remain unknown; current reports are not reused as travel-date forecasts. Model values are not local visibility probabilities or long-range travel forecasts.
• Added version/content IDs, saved-offline status, manual-only Web update notices and initial compass/AR guidance. Updated Japanese/English guides, methods and save/restore behavior.

Finite sampled estimates do not guarantee pinpoint stars, weather or complete terrain visibility. The approximate 15 mm fisheye preview excludes the new motion/focus/panorama calculations. No photo stitching or camera control. Read nightscape backups with 16.2 or later and retain originals until restoration is checked.

### 16.1.0 — 2026-09-09

• Added the Sun, Moon & landscape planner. Search for possible dates and viewpoints where the lower limb or centre of the Sun or Moon aligns with a building, tower or other custom subject.
• For summits and tips, enter a target point and its elevation to search dates from a fixed viewpoint. A Mount Fuji reference point is included.
• Sun searches do not apply lunar illumination or night-only filters. Sun mode includes solar photography precautions and a guide.
• Use the included terrain for Japan and selected Canadian regions in the planner.
• Preview framing with your camera sensor, lens, teleconverter and orientation.
• Added α1 II, α7R VI and Sony/Sigma lenses, a device-local equipment list, verified teleconverter choices and an approximate 15mm fisheye preview.
• Save and reopen compositions, coordinates, dates, notes and photos, retaining the selected Sun or Moon.
• Added JSON backups, calendar export and local iOS shooting reminders.
• Added in-app guides in Japanese and English.
• External map actions explain that your selected coordinates are passed to the map service.

Bundled terrain and astronomy calculations work offline. Nearby viewpoint searches and size ratios require a subject width and are not used for point targets. Results are planning estimates; visibility and access are not guaranteed. External maps, weather pages and sharing destinations may require a connection.

### 16.0.0 — 2026-09-08

Offline terrain and an in-app user guide are now available.

• Terrain covers Japan, including Okinawa and the Sakishima Islands, plus the Banff/Lake Louise and Yellowknife areas in Canada.
• View ridgelines within 100 km and estimate when the Galactic Center clears the terrain.
• Overlay terrain in the sky chart, full-screen view and AR, and explore terrain-aware shooting windows.
• Banff and Lake Louise are included in the location list with local time and daylight saving time support.
• Read the bundled Japanese or English user guide offline and return to the app with your location and date intact.

Canadian terrain coverage is regional, not nationwide. At Yellowknife, the app explains that the Galactic Center never rises above the horizon.
Terrain and times are planning estimates. Nearby trees, buildings and narrow valleys may not be resolved.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-09-04

Refinements based on real use in the field. No changes to any astronomical calculation.

• Recent locations and prefectures are now always shown under the location list (the show/hide button is gone)
• Simple/Advanced mode, sky chart layers, AR layers and capture settings are now remembered between launches
• Closing the full-screen simulation now carries its date and time back to the main screen
• Saved AR notes now belong to the night you were shooting, not the calendar date
• Button names are clearer: FOV 1x / FOV 0.5x for the AR field of view, and Reset for compass calibration
• The gold band marking the best Milky Way window now appears on the full-screen slider too
