Sparky's E6B emulates a mechanical E6B Flight Computer, with significant additional capabilities. The app provides digital readouts of values that would otherwise have to be eyeballed in a standard E6B. The use of cursors and steppers enables the precision of a digital computer with the speed and intuitiveness of an analog computer. The E6B is an analog computer invented in the 1930's by Lt. Philip Dalton, USN for purposes of training and flight calculations. The app can be used to perform calculations, or to practice and learn how to use a mechanical E6B. Advantages of analog slide-rule E6Bs include the speed of entering data, and continous operation that can enable a more intuitive feel for how outputs change as inputs are changed. If inputs are changed, it is simply a matter of a swipe or using a stepper to fine tune inputs, and outputs are updated simultaneously. Advantages of digital E6B's includes precision, but as E6Bs are in reality often used to estimate data, this precision often cannot be taken advantage of. Furthermore, entering data is slowed down by soft keypads popping up and down. It may be hard to understand how outputs change in response to inputs if individual numbers need to be entered on a keypad. Sparky's E6B provides the best of both worlds. The speed and intuitive entry of an analog E6B, along with the digital readout of a digital E6B. The "slide rule" or "front" side includes a circular log-log scale that can be used for multiplication, division, fuel consumption and time/speed/distance calculations. There are also various conversions available, such as nautical-miles/statute-miles/kilometers, fuel and oil volume and weight. The windows on the front are used for airspeed, various forms of "altitude' and mach number calculations. After that if you turn the compass slider to a different angle and try to draw a line up to that angle, the line will draw sideways and not straight up. This had me confused and I thought the app was broken, but it's easily fixed by hitting reset button and then you can proceed to slide the wind direction angle on the compass to your true index. From there on you can proceed to draw the line up, and it will draw upwards as intended. Overall great app, works just like a real e6b. ### 2/5 — Wind-side computer not correct *2022-11-22* I was going to use this app to teach a flight student how to use a mechanical E6B. The calculation side worked fine for me, but unfortunately the wind side isn’t scaled correctly so the Wind correction angle is not correct. Fingers crossed the developer can fix it before long. ### 5/5 — Sparky’s E-6B *2021-10-01* As a retired USAF Nav and current private pilot, this is a great memory jogger and great teaching tool! Just needs some clear nail polish to give it that broke in feeling. ;-) ### 4/5 — Nice version of E6B. Missing tick marks. *2020-08-15* A very good implementation of the E6B. However it is missing necessary tick marks for all conversions on the inner wheel. A simple fix to the graphics is in order. (I grew up with slide rulers. I know I can enter the numbers digitally, but the whole point of the E6B is analog.) I like how the wind direction gets locked-in once you set its speed. How about adding a double tap to lock the wind speed and direction. My fat fingers frequently mess up the wind speed when I try to set the course dial. ### 5/5 — Learning to fly *2019-11-15* I’m currently studying for my pilot’s license, and as my dad sometimes has to use the E6B, I resort to using this app, and it works just as well! Great substitute. ### 5/5 — Just checking this app out *2019-04-13* I came upon the Lite version while searching for an E6B app to use in my class. Trying to teach young adults and kids to use anything other than what's on their smart phone is, well, trying. As a volunteer instructor, this app is perfect to use in class to supplement the mechanical version allowing full tactical muscle memory development while learning its application to aviation planning problems. Where do I pay to support you? ### 3/5 — Great potential for trainee pilots *2019-01-10* This has great potential as a training aid, but needs to be configured with the option to draw the wind arrow downwards. Also to allow lines to be drawn on the wind-face to mark crosswind & tailwind runway limitations ### 5/5 — Good app one small bug on my system *2018-08-30* The bug is that on the slide rule side the red and green cursers sometimes get offset from the center of the dial. This means that dont read correctly in their windows. Most common in landscape mode. But it does happen in portrait as well. Only fix i can find is close the app and restart it. And hope its ok.
