## What is Speakeasy?

Two words that have nothing to do with each other, sixty seconds on the clock, and you
have to say something out loud that connects them.

padlock and escape. glacier and regret. ice rink and envy.

Thirty seconds to find an angle, then thirty to talk while your phone listens and writes
down what you said. Afterwards it shows you the things you cannot hear yourself doing: how
fast you went, where you stopped long enough that a listener would have noticed, which
words you reach for when you are stuck, and the whole thing written out.

There is no score. A number out of ten would tell you nothing you can act on.

It will not put you in front of a room. What it trains is the part where you have to think
without a script, and that is usually the part that catches people out.

The talk happens on the phone. The recording stays on it so you can hear a talk back, and
never leaves it; there is no account to make, and two taps delete every talk you have
given, audio included.

Two things reach the network. The app reads a small settings file and the word packs from
the same site everyone else does, with nothing about you in either. And one feature sends
the text of a talk to Google, to judge whether you really did join the two words; it stays
off until you switch it on.

Free. Every format, every pack, every talk you keep, no daily limit.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 1.2 — 2026-09-19

Hear it back is something you can point at now. Tap anywhere on the line and it plays from
there, and tap a word in what you said to hear the moment you said it.

Every color means one thing. Green is a word you landed, and it marks both words inside the
transcript where you said them. Amber is worth a look: a filler word, a pace that ran away, a
pause that a listener would have noticed. Blue is the thinking time, and it turns cyan the
moment the microphone opens.

The results screen tells you how you started. Quick, a beat, or a pause, and against your
usual, which it works out from your last few talks.

History reads like a list rather than a wall: the talks are separated, a talk that got both
words says so in green, and the streak row says what it means in plain words. When there is
not yet enough to show a trend, it says how many talks that will take.

The closed sign, if you ever meet it, hangs from its string and moves with the phone.

### 1.1 — 2026-09-10

Onboarding now follows whatever your phone is set to, instead of forcing itself light on a
dark screen.

The connection check used to give up the first time Google was busy, which was about one
talk in three. It tries again now.

Go again was sitting under the tab bar at the largest text sizes, and buttons that were
switched off still looked like you could press them. Both fixed.

A lot of the writing has been redone. The rules in particular were describing themselves
using words the app never showed you.

The drill's settings are now one tap from the words: the timing line under Start opens
them. On History, the line under your streak fills in as the week does, and the
transcript now shows you where the filler words fell. Settings itself has fewer headings and the switches have stopped narrating
themselves.

At the largest text sizes, long words no longer break in the middle and the option chips
wrap two and two instead of leaving one stranded.
