Speaking is the part of a language you cannot learn by reading. SpeakPair gives you five ways to practise it out loud — on your own when that is easier, with a real person when you are ready. START ON YOUR OWN Shadowing Watch a short clip and repeat the speaker line by line. You copy their rhythm, stress and melody, not just the words — it is one of the fastest ways to start sounding natural. Three modes: slowed down, full speed one line at a time, or the whole clip with no stops. Ten levels, each one unlocking the next. English clips for now, more languages coming. AI Coach A voice partner that is always awake. Talk about whatever you like, at your level, with nobody watching. The easiest first step if speaking to a stranger feels like a lot. Speak Sprint Name what you see before the timer runs out. Ten seconds a round, out loud. Speak Balloon Pop the balloon, find the word, say it. A word game you play with your voice. THEN TALK TO A REAL PERSON SpeakPair pairs learners with learners — not students with teachers. You and the person on the other side are working on the same language and are there for the same reason. Pick the languages you speak and the ones you are learning. Tap Start Speaking. We match you with someone whose languages line up with yours, and you talk by video for 10 to 15 minutes. Rate the call afterwards and decide whether you would like to talk to that person again. Practice Hour Scheduled sessions where everyone turns up at the same time, so there is someone to match with instead of an empty queue. WHY LEARNERS, NOT TUTORS Nobody is grading you and nobody is charging by the hour. You give as much as you get, and the matcher prefers pairs who can help each other in both directions. STAY IN CONTROL Block anyone. Report anyone. Rate every call. People you block or rate poorly never come back into your matches. You decide when you are visible and when you are not. SpeakPair is for adults only. KEEP THE STREAK A daily goal, a streak that grows every day you speak, and a Hall of Fame for the people who speak the most, climb the most Shadowing levels, and score highest in Speak Balloon. LANGUAGES English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Dutch, Polish, Hindi and Turkish. Questions, feedback or safety reports: info@speakpair.com ## Version history (last 5 releases) ### 1.2.3 — 2026-09-02 Calling from Discover works Tapping someone in Discover often came back with "They're not available to call right now", even when they were right there and open to calls. Discover and the calling code disagreed about what "available" means; they use the same definition now. If someone is listed, you can call them. Your AI Coach lesson no longer eats into your daily talk time with people. The two have separate allowances, but a lesson was quietly spending both. Also: a few people who had been suspended were still showing up on the leaderboards. ### 1.2.1 — 2026-08-29 Shadowing now speaks German 30 new lessons across three ranks — Alltag, Im Restaurant, Gesellschaft & Arbeit — beginner through advanced, recorded the same way as the English set. The app now picks your target language on its own, so a German learner lands on German. Switch at the top of the Shadowing screen whenever you like. Also fixed: the German lessons were rendered too slow at first, and the speed picker stopped at 100% with nowhere left to go. Both corrected. ### 1.2.0 — 2026-08-28 Shadowing, rebuilt Shadowing means repeating a native speaker almost word for word — copying their rhythm, stress and melody, not just the words. This release turns it into a proper lesson. Every lesson now runs in six stages: • Listen — hear the whole clip once, no text • Read & Listen — the same clip with the words in front of you • Guided Shadow — phrase by phrase, pausing so you can say it back • Shadow — speak along while it keeps playing, without stopping for mistakes • Listen to Yourself — your own recording played straight after the original • Full Run — the whole clip at real speed, no text Speed and how much text you see follow your level, and you can override either at any time. There is no score anywhere: nothing is analysing your speech yet, and a number would only pretend otherwise. 30 lessons in three ranks • Daily Life (Beginner) — everyday situations, short sentences • Restaurant (Intermediate) — one evening out, from the booking to the bill • Science & Space (Advanced) — real speakers at natural pace A rank opens when your level reaches it, or when you finish the rank before it. Calls Your camera now starts off, and it only switches on once both people have asked for it. Nobody's video reaches someone who is still audio-only. Matching You can now ask to be matched with people of your own gender. If nobody is free, you decide whether to widen the search, your setting stays as it is. ### 1.1.0 — 2026-08-26 Shadowing A new way to practise: repeat after a native speaker, line by line. Shadowing means copying their rhythm, stress and melody not just the words and it is one of the fastest ways to start sounding natural. Ten short clips, three modes: • Listen (75%) — slowed down, one line at a time • Assisted Try (100%) — full speed, still line by line • Simulation (100%) — the clip runs from start to finish with no stops. Speak along with the speaker. Finish a level to unlock the next one. Your practised clips appear on your profile. English clips for now; more languages are coming. Hall of Fame A third board ranks the deepest shadowers by the levels they have climbed. Discover Partner cards now show when someone was last online, so "online now" means what it says. People who asked to be notified are marked, and the list only counts the last three hours. ### 1.0.9 — 2026-08-18 Speak Balloon comes to iPhone Pop balloons, find the word, say it out loud — the game Android players have been enjoying is now on iOS. A new Hall of Fame • Speaking — the most active speakers of the last 30 days, with profile photos, language flags and gold, silver and bronze medals • Speak Balloon — a fresh weekly high-score race Playing Speak Sprint and Speak Balloon on more days multiplies your Speaking score. Fixes • Some accounts could get stuck and were unable to start a search at all.
