## What is Speech Trainer 3D?

Speech Trainer 3-D is a unique application created specifically to help individuals with speech-sound disorders and English language learners. Speech Trainer 3-D provides an animated video model for both consonants and vowel sounds. With both a side and front view, Speech Trainer 3-D provides 32 English language sounds: 23 consonants and 8 vowels. Designed by a certified speech-language pathologist, Speech Trainer 3-D is perfect for those individuals struggling with sound production and for use by SLPs, special educators, and parents alike.
Purpose
Speech Trainer 3-D was created to be used as a therapy tool to assist individuals in correctly producing target sounds. Speech Trainer incorporates both an animated video of the speech sound as well as a systematic breakdown for describing the movements necessary for each sound. Both video modeling and video prompting are useful for many individuals when learning new skills1.
In addition to the animated video model, Speech Trainer 3-D uses the camera function built into the iPad 2 and higher to allow the learner to see a side-by-side picture of the model and his or her own face making the sound. Incorporating the built-in camera allows the professional to utilize both a visual and a tactile prompt for the client, which may in turn, encourage longer productions and improve the muscle coordination needed for speech2.
How to Use
Speech Trainer 3-D is designed to be used individually or in group practice. Once the app is loaded, the user can choose whether to work on consonants or vowels. When a phoneme type has been selected, the app will open with a phoneme bar along the top of the page and the side-view of a model of the speech mechanism. For consonants, the user can simply slide the selection bar sideways to access all of the consonant sounds. When the phoneme is selected, a “play” arrow is tapped and the video model moves while the sound is produced. To hear the systematic breakdown of movements, a double “fast-forward” arrow is pushed. A square will surround the area being discussed. Subsequent taps on the double arrow will move to the next prompt.
The app opens in a default side-view; however, a frontal view is available. In this view, the speech-mechanism model is replaced with a person modeling the sounds. The app also provides an audio example of 2-4 words for each sound.
The iPad camera is activated when the iPad is rotated to the landscape position. At that time, the user will see their image in the camera beside the avatar. The user will then be able to use the video modeling to make encourage accurate production of sounds.

Customization
Speech Trainer 3-D allows the user to specify which sound in the English language to target. Transitioning between multiple sounds is easily accomplished with the tap of a button. Changing from the side medical model of the speech mechanism to the mirror like human model is done with a quick tap. Finally, adding a self-monitoring component is encouraged by simply rotating the iPad and engaging the iPad’s built-in camera.

Features
•Full color medical model of the speech mechanism
•Systematic breakdown of each phoneme with video
•32 English phonemes: 23 consonants and 8 vowels
•Both side and frontal views for demonstrating the sound
•Built-in camera feature to encourage self-monitoring

Speech Trainer 3D demonstrates the sounds in two views: Front and Side View. Speech Trainer uses the International Phonetics Alphabet, which is the best way to represent each sound.
Speech Trainer has 30 sounds represented; 23 consonants and 7 vowels.

### 1/5 — Pésimo

*2019-07-01, version 5.0*

Incompleto, con errores, la animación no hace notar la diferencia en la pronunciación. Decepcionante

### 5/5 — The perfect addition to my therapy room!

*2019-04-30, version 5.0*

Love this app! When my explanation of placement isn’t working for the students, I use this app to provide a better visual, especially for sounds that are more difficult to see correct placement. I also love the video feature as the students are way more motivated by this than a mirror.

### 1/5 — Total waste

*2017-03-06, version 3.0*

Horrible. Author states she is a speech pathologist-she should realize that in presenting phonemes they should be the pure sound such as /p/ or /b/ and not /puh/ or /buh/ adding the schwa sound. I cannot use this app. With my Accent Mod students as the information presented is grossly incorrect. Disappointing.

### 3/5 — School slp

*2016-05-11, version 2.1*

Upper elementary find this app engaging.
As a SLP hoped it would be good visual support particularly for the /r/. However, it is limited & does not exaggerate enough. Mirror modeling is much better.

### 1/5 — Errors make this app unusable in therapy

*2016-02-16, version 2.1*

My clinic paid $8 for this app so we could use it in therapy with clients but we found that a number of the example words for the vowel sounds are incorrect. For example, for /e/, the example words included "bed". Clearly, it isn't pronounced with a long a sound.

### 2/5 — A few serious mistakes!

*2014-03-10, version 2.0*

I wanted to improve my English pronunciation; therefore, despite the lack of review for me to determine if this is a good app (and if worths the price – there are similar vowels and Consonants training on a few IPA/language related websites), I went ahead and bought it. After my first session with all vowels and consonants training, my conclusion: it's a less than desired app – too little examples for each sound (just two!) and a little too pricy for what it offers. But what really annoys me is a number of mistakes I spotted, and it makes me lost confidence whether the instruction for each sound is correct.

Examples, k and g's instructions - the vocal cord highlighted but the instruction is for the nasal passage; and one of the examples for the s sound is wrong; "car" doesn't belong to s sound–either the spelling is wrong or the example is wrong.

The developer should goes through every sound and its instructions, then have experts do the quality check and release an update soon.

### 1/5 — School SLP

*2013-09-04, version 1.1*

I feel that this app doesn't accurately depict the correct way to produce sounds. I also don't like that all consonants are paired with a vowel. It plays the demo so quickly it's hard for students to see what to do. Waste of $8.

### 2/5 — Disappointed

*2013-05-30, version 1.1*

Thought this would be a great tool to assist my struggling articulation student who can't get that hated /r/ sound. This was absolutely no help! Definitely not for students who have cognitive limitations as the directions given (despite the visual) are very scientific and hard to understand if you aren't an SLP. /r/ phoneme is prompted as "er" and it does not offer instruction for all vocalic r's. Side view is better for alveolar/fricative/affricate sounds showing the students correct contact points if they have difficulty with an SLP model. Does offer a frontal view for each sound but unless it's a speech sound articulated with your lips, its useless. I wouldn't spend the money on this, use your iPad and create video models yourself.

### 5/5 — Great tool!!

*2013-05-11, version 1.1*

I have used this app with both students and adults, during therapy sessions and at parent meetings to demonstrate and teach clients and their families correct placement. I used to use my own drawings with arrows ( pathetic, I know) but the dynamic quality of the app allows folks who are not SLPs appreciate both the complexities and subtleties of the movements of speech. Thanks for a great tool!

### 4/5 — Pretty good app, but...

*2013-05-11, version 1.1*

Over all a pretty good app. I wish it had a little more content to the app and gave a variety of examples. Would recommend as a basic app to a friend!
