## What is Spellout?

Spellout is a simple, powerful app for English learners to improve listening, vocabulary, reading, and pronunciation skills. It is a modern app with lots of features in a simple, intuitive interface. 

Dictation is a study method that can train not only listening ability but also vocabulary, reading, writing, spelling and pronunciation skills. It’s highly recommended by many English teachers. However, full-text dictation is very time consuming and too difficult for most English learners. According to statistics,  just ten different lemmas (the, be, to, of, and, a, in, that, have, and I) account for a remarkable 25% of all the words used in the Oxford English Corpus. If you were to read through the corpus, one word in four (ignoring proper names) would be an example of one of these ten lemmas. Similarly, the 100 most common lemmas account for 50% of the corpus, and the 1,000 most common lemmas account for 75%. But to account for 90% of the corpus you would need a vocabulary of 7,000 lemmas, and to get to 95% the figure would be around 50,000 lemmas. In other words, the vast majority of time and effort spent on full-text dictation is consumed by the large number of high-frequency words that you are already familiar with. 

In this app, you do not need to do full-text dictation. You only need to spell out the important words(according to your target) in the sentence. Our system will intelligently change future test questions based on your target and progress to help you focus on unfamiliar words, improve listening, vocabulary, reading and pronunciation skills in the shortest time possible.
