## What is SpellSynth?

SpellSynth is a playable love-letter to the 1978 spelling toy that taught a generation to read — rebuilt for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with five modes, a crunchy VFD display, and
three vintage voice characters across two decades of speech-synthesis history.

Tap a letter and it speaks. Type ANY word — your name, this week's vocabulary list — and SpellSynth speaks it back.

EVERY WORD SPEAKS
The 500+ bundled words across 20+ themes use a hand-recorded retro voice. Anything else — a name, your kid's spelling list — falls back to the system engine through your chosen voice, cached so the second tap is instant.

• FREE PLAY — type any word, a whole phrase, or a number and hear it spoken. Tap SPACE to build a sentence; it's read back word by word as the VFD cycles. Numbers ("2" becomes "two") and contractions ("don't") speak too. A GAP control tunes the pause between words (50–500 ms), and a RECENT row keeps this session.

• SEQ — a 16-step sequencer that speaks a word per step, locked to your tempo. Type four words, get a robot vocal loop. Put a single letter on a step and it spells on the beat instead. FIT stretches each word to fill its step, so words pitch up as the tempo climbs.

• SPELL — SpellSynth says a word. You spell it. Three mistakes and you get the answer, then try a new one. HINT reveals a letter when you're stuck.

• MYSTERY WORD — the classic hidden-word game. You get the category and first letter free; pick letters until it reveals itself. Six wrong guesses ends it.

• SAY IT — listen-and-repeat practice. SpellSynth spells the word letter by letter, then says it whole. REPEAT to hear it again, NEXT for a new one.

• SHARE — render any word or phrase to a WAV and send it to Files, AirDrop, or your DAW.

THREE VINTAGE VOICES
Pick a voice character in Settings. Each one draws from a different era of speech-synthesis history, applied to every word you hear:

• 1968 ODYSSEY — calm, deep-baritone monotone with a deliberately slow cadence. Fixed-pitch formant synthesis at ~65 Hz, time-stretched 1.6×. Aesthetic homage to the late-60s sci-fi AI voices.

• 1978 LPC — the original Speak & Spell character. A 10-pole LPC vocoder driven by the actual TMS5220 chirp ROM, the same speech algorithm Texas Instruments shipped in the toy. Buzzy, granular, unmistakable.

• 1986 DECTALK STYLE — fixed-pitch impulse train through formants extracted from your input. Modelled on the Klatt-style synthesis that defined Hawking's iconic computer voice. Deliberate, monotone, emphatically computery.

• DEFAULT — clean system speech, no extra processing, for when you just want clear pronunciation.

Each caches separately, so switching is instant and the choice sticks.

PLAY WITH A MIDI KEYBOARD
Connect a USB, Bluetooth, or Network MIDI keyboard and the keypad plays from real keys. Notes C4–C#6 trigger letters A–Z, so any 25-key controller covers the whole alphabet. Pairs naturally with the LPC voice for a Speak & Spell instrument on your desk.

BUNDLED AUDIO UNIT (AUv3)
SpellSynth ships an AUv3 instrument extension, so the same voice engine loads inside GarageBand, AUM, Loopy Pro, Cubasis, Logic Pro for iPad, and any AUv3 host on iPhone or iPad. Type a word and it speaks live. Twenty-three parameters cover pitch, speed, bit-crush, sample-rate reduction, filter, envelope, LFO, stutter, the step sequencer, MIDI shaping, and voice character. Ten factory presets; all four voices play in your DAW.

A serious MIDI surface for performers: sustain pedal (CC 64) for hold-and-release phrasing, Channel Pressure (aftertouch) routable to any parameter, three velocity curves (Soft / Linear / Hard), a pitch-bend range from ±0 to ±12 semitones, and 14 MIDI Learn targets covering every performance knob — bound CCs ride along with the preset. Stutter locks to the host tempo (1/4, 1/8, 1/16), and a Letter Map mode maps A–Z onto MIDI notes 60–85 so you can sequence spelling right in your DAW. Perfect for producers chasing that Kraftwerk / Stereolab / Broadcast sound.

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2026-06-18*

SpellSynth is great for adding voices and phonics to your music. Nice design, easy to use although I wish there was an option to switch to a QWERTY key layout instead of the default alphabetical order of the original Speak and Spell hardware it’s kind of emulating. Great start though, five stars, looking forward to adding voices to loops and drones.

**Developer response:** thanks for support! yes, it has type mode on 1.2.6 ver.

### 4/5 — Cool, but

*2026-05-24*

None of the voices sound like the 1984 Texas Instruments voice I hoped for when I purchased this. Very cool app for audio work.

**Developer response:** Thanks for advise!

### 5/5 — Updated review: Retro awesomeness! 🤘🏼😁

*2026-05-06*

Thanks for the speedy fixes and updates. The default voice now brings on the instant nostalgia and the games and functions are rocking!
I’ll dive into Auv3 mode a bit more, but with some quick testing all seems much improved and working flawlessly. Will report if I run across any new issues. Cheers!

**Developer response:** Updated: Both your points landed in releases since this. 1.0.4 brought full word typing to the AUv3 plugin (no more being stuck with letters / CAT demo).

And 1.1.0 added an LPC mode driven by the actual chirp — tap LPC in the brand header and every word/letter runs through a 10-pole LPC vocoder. That's as close to the 1978 character as I can get without an emulator.

Thanks for the patience!

### 1/5 — Doesn’t say any words

*2026-04-25*

I like the idea. I know it can be better but right now, it’s very incomplete. And that’s from both standalone and AUV3 perspectives. Saw the update and tried typing in “hi” and it couldn’t say it. Hopefully this gets better someday. No use for it yet

**Developer response:** Free Play used to go silent on anything outside the bundled ~550 words — turned out I was
releasing the speech synth before its callback fired, so the audio never came back.

Now any word you type pronounces via the system TTS and caches for instant replay. Sorry for the rough first impression — would love it if you give it another shot.

Cheers!

### 1/5 — terrible

*2026-04-25*

Found this on an iPad music group on Facebook. Whoever posted about it needs to quit lol

**Developer response:** Hello! Thank you for your feedback. I would love to hear any specific suggestions you have!

### 1/5 — Shovelware App

*2026-04-24*

macht nichts was der Apple Speech Synthesizer auch kann.

**Developer response:** Since version 1.1.0, I’ve already implemented an algorithm that simulates LPC speech, which should be completely different from the Apple Speech Synthesizer.

Feel free to give it another try when you have the chance~
Mach’s gut!

### 1/5 — Not the original speak voice

*2026-04-23*

1. This does not contain the actual lo-fi robotic voice of the original speak n spell.
2. In Auv3 mode, the user is stuck with the word “cat” or a single letter. There is a keyboard button that is basically nonfunctional. Please fix these issues.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the detailed review — both fair points.

On the voice: it actually runs through an 8-bit bit-crush, 24 kHz downsample, and anti-aliased LPF chain to chase that Speak & Spell character (Apple won't let us ship the original TI0280 chip on iOS). I hear you that it still doesn't quite nail it — pushing the crunch harder and getting closer to the original formants is on the bench for the next update.

On AUv3: v1.0.3 is already in App Review and brings a batch of plugin fixes (preset save/load, MIDI pitch bend, panic, parameter display in Logic's generic view). The bigger fix you're pointing at — typing full words inside the plugin instead of being limited to letters or the "CAT" demo — isn't in 1.0.3; it's the top item for the next update right after. I'll get it through review as fast as I can.

Cheers!

### 2/5 — Can’t Say Most Words

*2026-04-22*

Bought this to use as a robotic voice for some music, but it could only say one of the ten or so words I entered. Good for individual letters, but disappointing overall.

**Developer response:** Update since this: AUv3 got full word typing in 1.0.4 — type any word inside the plugin and it speaks it. And in 1.1.5 (just shipped), Free Play in the standalone speaks any word too via system TTS fallback — was a synth-retain bug on my side.

If you're still chasing a robotic voice for music, would really appreciate you giving it another try.

Cheers :)

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.3.0 — 2026-07-31

1.3.0 — SEQ: The Word Step Sequencer.

• New SEQ mode: put a word on each of 16 steps and hear
them speak on a beat. Type four words, get a robot vocal
loop. Tempo runs 40 to 240, steps land on 1/4, 1/8 or
1/16 notes, and the loop can be any length up to 16.

• Put a single letter on a step instead and it uses the
recorded alphabet voice — so you can spell a word out on
the beat, then say it whole.

• FIT stretches each word to exactly fill its step, so
words speed up and pitch up as you push the tempo.

• The same sequencer is in the AUv3, where it locks to
your DAW's tempo and follows the transport. Two presets
to start from: Robot Chant and Spelling Bee.

### 1.2.6 — 2026-06-19

1.2.6 — Words, Numbers & Whole Phrases.

• FREE PLAY now speaks more than single words. Tap SPACE and type a whole sentence — it's read back word by word through your chosen voice. The old PHRASE mode is folded right in, so everything lives in one place.

• Numbers and contractions finally talk — type "I have 2 cats" or "don't stop" and you hear exactly that, instead of a dropped number or a spelled-out letter.

• The 1978 LPC voice is cleaner and more even — quiet words are brought up to a consistent level, and the buzz on hard sounds is gone.

### 1.2.5 — 2026-06-18

Minor bugs fixed!

### 1.2.4 — 2026-06-16

1.2.4 — All four voices, everywhere.

• The AUv3 plugin now speaks all four voice characters — 1968 ODYSSEY and 1986 join RAW and 1978 LPC in your DAW, with two new factory presets to match. Old presets and automation keep working exactly as before.

• PHRASE never goes silent — a word the voice can't pronounce gets spelled out letter-by-letter instead of muting the whole sentence, and the app now tells you when something can't play.

• New guided tour — first launch walks you through typing and speaking your first word right on the real keypad. Replay it anytime from Settings.

### 1.2.2 — 2026-06-02

1.2.2 — Share your sound.

• New SHARE button in FREE PLAY and PHRASE — render any word or phrase to a WAV and send it to Files, Messages, AirDrop, or straight into a DAW. What the retro voice plays is exactly what you get.

• PHRASE tidy-up — SPACE and SAY are now full-width bars, GAP and SHARE share a row, and the input switch reads plain KEYPAD / TYPE.
