When you switch away and come back to it, the app pops up a warning that says: “Retrieving Data: This may take up to 20 seconds. You may need to restart the app to force a refresh.” Come on, this is amateur hour. ### 2/5 — App keeps Venom from being great *2025-09-04* The venom works well, holds the temp pretty dang close and has made long cooks enjoyable. The app for the Venom is so bad unfortunately, that I wouldn’t recommend the Venom to anyone. For what it costs, just save up and by a gravity fed smoker with Bluetooth. ### 2/5 — Bare Bones App *2025-06-15* Love my spider grill but the app leaves a lot to be desired. It’s functional but very bare bones. A great starting point would be improving the Temp adjustment…I would much rather have a dial or scroll interface than old school analog where you have to manually enter numbers for every little adjustment. I hope Spider Grills will invest a little more into the user experience here. ### 2/5 — The App is so bad. *2025-06-07* I do love the product, but the app is so frustrating. It doesn’t stay connected. It uses WiFi so as long as both things are on the router there is no reason to disconnect. AND EVEN IF OT DOES disconnect for any reason, have the app remember the cook that was just started. Every time it disconnects it looses history. Insanely annoying. I don’t say this lightly: if I had known the app would be this frustrating, I would not have purchased the controller. Simple as. ### 3/5 — Connection Issues *2024-09-19* I have had trouble connecting the app to the Venom. It seems the Venom will connect to the WiFi but the app takes so long to pair with the Venom the Venom times out. I have had multiple email exchanges with the folks at Spider Grills but still no success. It is a real hassle to get the app connected. If and when it does connect it’s great. I agree with other reviewer the app needs considerable work. ### 3/5 — Venom. *2023-05-17, version 1.8.9* Venom works well but unfortunately the App can in NO way be dependent upon ### 3/5 — App crashes when you try to view the graph *2023-03-19* Overall I like what spider grills is trying to do. I’m using the venom and it is an excellent addition to my charcoal grill. Unfortunately I cannot see the graph as every time I try to open it, the app crashes and closes instantly. I’ve tried restarting my phone but that has no effect. It would be nice to have more control in the app such as how often it gives you temperature updates. The spider grills hardware is great, the app needs a lot of work to match the quality of the hardware. ### 3/5 — Needs work. The spider controller is great, the app needs a little work *2023-03-02* Overall the app needs a little work. On my iPhone 14 pro max the display looks messed up and the biggest problem is the graph. It works sometimes and sometimes the screen is blank. The venom always shows the graph so it’s collecting the data, it just does not make its way into the app. ### 3/5 — Needs the icons fixed *2022-11-12* The icons need to be fixed because the image and the text are overlapping with the icons on the bottom and when I view the graph the X icon doesn’t actually register I touched it unless I touch all around it so it seems like the target is off. I hope these get ironed out because the Venom seems awesome. ### 2/5 — Sign in option *2022-07-17, version 1.5.2* Someone else mentioned it here, but hopefully if I mention it as well it can get some attention. I LOVE the spider venom, so this review is in no way a reflection of the product itself, but the app needs some work. It has so much potential and I enjoy being able to monitor the grill, however, having to log in everytime I switch to another app, reconnect, having and error message and not being able to use all the features (like the “how to” section) is definitely a huge downside. When I first downloaded the app it worked great and I only had to log in if I had not used it in a week (I’m a weekend warrior and only occasionally smoke during the week), but now it’s every single time I close it or go to another app. At one point my venom wasn’t working right so I figured I’d check out the how to video section to see if there was something to help, but I couldn’t access the section and had to go to YouTube and find a video to help. Once again the venom is phenomenal, but the app doing what it does is disheartening and makes me question its reliability since everytime I log in it takes a minute to reconnect to the venom and give me the accurate reading. I appreciate what Spider is providing and I still use it, but having to check the temp manually to make sure my reading is connected properly/I’m logged in is a bit of a draw back and was one of the big selling points for me. Again it works great without the app, but it would be a huge help if this was fixed especially if you want to be able to charge more for the product in the future. I love my 22” Weber kettle so much that I have to remove the Venom just so I can use it again. Deleting and downloading the app every time I use the kettle has stopped working for me. This sucks! ### 1/5 — App doesn’t measure up to pit *2026-07-04* For such a refined grill, the huntsman, the venom controller app, this app, is an abysmal failure. It’s clunky, not very intuitive, the ticket creation section is broken and it just feels like total garbage. Please, trash this app and start over. You’re likely running off potential customers who might be interested in upgrading to the huntsman, but if gauging it by this app, I could see where some would think the grill may be just as bad. Which is definitely not the case. It requires setting up for each use. Getting support is impossible. It takes 30 to 45 minutes to get it connected and that is only when you can get it to pair the venom to the app. ### 1/5 — Can’t Connect *2025-10-12* Venom won’t connect to the app. Especially annoying because the control board on the Venom doesn’t have a pause button. If I need to have the lid open for a while to season, glaze, etc, the fan goes full speed and the coals get too hot and when the lid goes back on, the temp is much higher than I want it to be. Only solution is to turn it off and turn it back on when the lid is back on. Love the Venom but the connectivity is pretty bad. You should have made a Bluetooth option so I can connect directly to my phone and not have to relay to my WiFi to the app. ### 2/5 — No notifications *2026-07-01* App doesn’t send notifications to my iPhone or iPad. Timers, etc, work fine on the unit and I can control the unit with the app, but zero notifications. I absolutely love how I can control a cook on my Weber Kettle from my phone! The fan gets your charcoal up to temp quickly and efficiently and keeps the temp controlled. The GUI for the App is a little hokey. Could use some aesthetic GUI upgrades but the latest is functional. A few features I would like to see are - low temp alerts. For if/when the grill runs out of fuel. Also some logic so if it sees a steep decline in temp it can figure that it’s probably the lid being removed and hold off 5mins before firing the fan up. Also maybe storing the temp graphs for later reference. Just some ideas. This product is great and with a few tweaks it can be even better! ### 4/5 — Not quite there yet *2023-03-26* Took multiple attempts to connect with unit. Then wouldn’t sync with unit. When it finally did. I couldn’t control my Venom unit. Finally got it ti work somewhat. The app needs an actual alarm notification when pit and meat temperatures are reached, not just a message. ### 4/5 — Problem fixed *2022-10-07* My original review said that the app didn’t work, never finished setup. Apparently it was a bad control board. After I contacted their support, they’ve sent a new control board and it’s now working as advertised. It didn’t take very long either, good job. If you want pellet grill style temperature control on a Weber charcoal grill (and who wouldn’t want that awesome charcoal grilled flavor??), it’s doing a good job for me. ### 3/5 — Great grill, poor app *2026-07-24* Guys, the grill is PHENOMENAL! But how come we can’t get some quality of life upgrades for the app? It works, but it is cumbersome. IF the app remains logged in for you, it defaults to the “how to” section. I know how to use the grill. Have it default to grill controls, or allow someone to pick what it defaults to. Update the firmware of the grill controller as well please. Allow us to remove the reminder to close the lower vent.
