## What is Spot?

Spot is a spotter's logbook for everything that moves. Planes overhead, trains and buses going past, ships offshore, tagged wildlife, the ISS at dusk. See what is around you, bank what you catch, and build a collection.

THE MAP
Aircraft, with helicopters, military, emergency and privacy-flagged flights called out. Trains, buses and ships. Airports. The ISS and upcoming rocket launches. Earthquakes, wildfires, lightning and severe weather. Road incidents, roadwork and events. Tagged sharks from OCEARCH. Landmarks. Confirmed ALPR camera locations from public OpenStreetMap data. Flight restriction zones. Tonight's sky objects on real geography.

RADAR SCOPE
The same contacts on a plan position scope centred on you. Range rings, a rotating sweep, phosphor afterglow and colour coded blips. Pinch to set the range, 2 km to 500 km.

SENSOR
Your own movement, from the phone's GPS, barometer and accelerometer. Live speed on a dial, altitude, climb rate, g-force, heading and position. All on the device, so it works in a tunnel, on a train, or in airplane mode. Choose mph, km/h or knots.

JOURNEYS
Hit record, put the phone in your pocket, and Spot writes the whole trip down: route, speed, altitude, climb and g-force. It keeps going with the screen off and pauses itself when you stop.
Every journey lands on a globe you can spin, each mode in its own colour
Replay a trip with a time scrubber, or watch a long flight play back on the globe
Lay your live stats over video you filmed on the trip and save it to Photos
Export any journey as a GPX file

LIVE ACTIVITIES
Pin a flight and follow it on the Dynamic Island and Lock Screen: position, altitude, speed and arrival. Start a nearby radar and watch the count of aircraft around you change. A recording journey gets its own Live Activity with a stop button.

SPOTDEX
Every kind you have caught, laid out like a dex. Dex numbers, first and last seen, flyover tallies, notes and photos. Uncaught entries stay silhouettes until you find them.

BADGES
Over a hundred badges across milestones, logbook, craft, places, photos, habits, flyovers, watchers and journeys.

FOG OF WORLD
The ground you have walked is cleared from a fog layer over the map. Fold the world into a globe, see the countries and cities you have set foot in, and climb the explorer ranks. Journeys clear fog as you travel.

SKY AND SPACE
What is up tonight from where you are: the Moon and its phase, planets, bright stars, meteor showers and comets, with rise and set times and a watchlist. Then the solar system in 3D, with the ISS on its live orbit.

SPOTTER AR
Hold the phone up and Spot overlays nearby aircraft and the ISS on the real sky, so you know which light you are looking at.

ALERTS
A tracked plane or train passing overhead. Emergency squawks nearby. Rare aircraft and special callsigns. The ISS overhead or due. Earthquakes, wildfires, lightning and severe weather near you. Launch countdowns. Entering a flight restriction zone. A followed shark surfacing again. A watched wildfire growing, contained, or out.

PRIVACY
Location stays on the device. One tap on the kill switch shuts down every GPS read across the app, and a blur option hides your exact pin for screenshots. Nothing is posted anywhere unless you share it.

WORKS OFFLINE
The Sensor readout, journey recording, Fog of World, the globe, the sky chart and your whole logbook all run with no connection.

ICLOUD
Sightings, photos, badges, fog, follows, watchlist and journeys sync through your own private iCloud database. You choose what carries.

SHORTCUTS AND WIDGETS
Widgets for your pins and the radar. Siri shortcuts to pin a flight, start a radar, or ask what is overhead.

SPOT PRO
Spotting, pinning, the logbook, badges, Fog of World, the sky chart, Sensor and Journeys are free. Spot Pro adds the server backed feeds and their alerts, monthly.

### 5/5 — Been having so much fun

*2026-08-13*

I love seeing what’s going on over my head and this app is so fun. Love how you can add the planes you see to your collection. Having the gps and the live activities on at all times takes a lot of battery though. Idk if it’s something that can be fixed but if not it’s still a great app

**Developer response:** Thank you! Something I’m working on!

### 5/5 — Nice work bro

*2026-08-09*

Very impressed with this app. Just started using it, but UI / UX is clean and responsive and features seem comprehensive and unique

**Developer response:** Thank you!

### 2/5 — Needs work

*2026-07-31*

Flight paths are not correct. You’ll click on a plane and the path it tells you will be something totally different than what it actually is. For example, planes that are landing at my local airport say they are traveling to and from airports two or three states over and doesn’t even mention the airport it’s actually landing at. And this is for every flight so it’s not that it’s a flight that’s been diverted, etc.

**Developer response:** Thank you for bringing this to my attention!
1.2.2 will be released shortly fixing this, and I hope it helps this review ❤️‍🔥

### 5/5 — Opens up the World around and above you!

*2026-07-30*

I'm a very casual aircraft spotter but this app has really re-awakened my interest. It offers real time identification of the planes passing overhead, complete with their departure and destination airports etc. You can further enhance your experience by subscribing but, unlike some other apps, this doesn't shut you out on the basic free version so gives you the chance to enjoy the base information first which actually encourages you to think about upgrading and exploring its other rich features (A lot of non aircraft stuff to enjoy too) A really great app & 100% recommended. Thank you to the developer.

### 5/5 — Such a beautiful app!

*2026-07-29*

This app has it all. I’m still discovering its features and amazed at the capabilities. And no ads! 10/10

### 5/5 — What I have been looking for

*2026-07-26*

This app is awesome. I have so much ability to look at layers of data across the world. It combines many of the apps I use into one. I really like the ability to turn off location in the app to save battery while still receiving data. Great job!

### 5/5 — A brilliant way to unlock the data layer of what’s all around you

*2026-07-25*

As a longtime user of plane identification apps I was psyched to see some innovation in the function. Spot doesn’t just tell you what the plane is overhead, it sends you a notification that one is there, lets you track and “collect” it, and keeps track of what you’ve seen. And it works for more than planes, making this truly a unique app to add the data layer to things all around you — stars and planets, trains, boats, and more. Brilliant.

**Developer response:** Thank you, this review means a lot

### 5/5 — So cool.

*2026-07-23*

To whoever the developer of this app is, this app is so cool. I just downloaded it and already love it. Thank you for making this app free!

**Developer response:** Thank you ❤️‍🔥

Routes
Plan a drive that goes past the good stuff. Pick a start and an end, say what you want to see and what to steer clear of, and Spot threads a route through it. Save the ones you like, open them in Apple Maps when it's time to go.

Sun
A new Sun page. Sunrise, sunset, golden hour, blue hour and solar noon for wherever you're standing, scrubbable across the day. Spot can also tint itself to match where the Sun really is: blue before dawn, gold at golden hour, navy at night. It all works out on your device.

Tide
Tide predictions from real harbour gauges, calculated on your phone. Highs and lows, springs and neaps, and a picker so you choose the port you actually know rather than whichever one happens to be nearest.

Sky events
Eclipses, showers and conjunctions get proper pages now: when it starts, what it looks like from where you are, and where to look. Track the countdown on your Lock Screen.

Weather on the map
Rain radar, wind, temperature and air quality as map layers, with a legend and a card that's honest about what each one actually measures and where it doesn't reach.

Journeys
Record a journey, then take it with you. Elevation profile, map snapshot, and a share reel.

New map engine
The map now runs on Apple Maps. Same pins, same layers, better base map underneath.

Widgets
Four new ones for the home screen and Lock Screen. Sun gives you golden hour and the day's light. Moon has the phase, rise and set, and the countdown to full. Tide draws a whole day of water and works with no signal at all. Tonight tells you when it gets dark, what's up there, and whether a pass is worth catching.

### 1.2.3 — 2026-08-07

Sensor and Journeys

New Sensor tab
The Map tab has a third segment: Sensor. It reads your phone's own GPS, barometer and accelerometer to show live speed, altitude, climb rate, g-force and position. Everything is measured on the device, so it keeps working with no signal (a tunnel, a train, a plane in airplane mode). Switch between mph, km/h and knots with a tap. Sensor is off until you turn it on, and nothing touches your sensors until you do.

Record a journey
Hit record, put the phone in your pocket, and Spot writes down the whole trip: route, speed, altitude, climb and g-force. It keeps recording with the screen off, pauses itself when you stop moving, and shows a Live Activity so you can check on it from the lock screen. Works for drives, trains, buses, walks and flights.

New Journeys board
Every trip you have recorded, drawn on a spinnable globe with each mode in its own colour. Below it: lifetime distance, time, climb and top speed, then your logbook.

Replay any journey
Scrub through a trip on the map and watch the route fill in, with speed and altitude updating at the head. Press play to run it back at up to 20 minutes a second. Long flights can be replayed on the globe instead, with the camera following you round the planet.

Put your numbers on your own video
Pick a clip you filmed on the trip and Spot burns the live stats over it. It lines the footage up with the journey from the video's timestamp, handles timelapses, and offers three overlay styles. Save straight to Photos or share it.

Also new
Export any journey as a GPX file for other apps.
Eleven new Journey badges, from your first recording to 10,000 km.
Journeys clear Fog of World as you travel.
Journeys sync to your private iCloud, tracks included.
Metrics across Sensor and Journeys are now a clean instrument readout.

### 1.2.2 — 2026-08-02

Urgent Fixes
Fixed a crash on launch if you follow a tagged animal or watch a wildfire.
Flight routes are checked against where the plane actually is. A stale route from the community database no longer shows a flight the wrong way round.
Flight paths no longer stitch in an earlier leg. If the recorded track is too old to be this flight, the map shows only what it has seen since you tapped.
The journey line puts the plane where it really is between the two airports instead of parking it at the end.

### 1.2.1 — 2026-08-01

Fire Watch: track wildfires near your places and get alerts when they spread, get contained, or burn out.
Follow tagged wildlife (sharks, turtles, and more) and get pinged when a tag surfaces.
Pinned Flights is now Tracked. Flights, wildlife tags, and fires all live in one hub.
iCloud sync. Your logbook backs up and syncs across your devices.
Flight alerts now show the route, not just the callsign.
Aircraft cards go deeper: registration, age, and military flag for Pro.
New map layers: airports, dispatch incidents, and roadwork.
Bug fixes and reliability improvements.
