Even the offline sales wouldn’t work. ### 3/5 — Transaction update *2026-08-20, version 7.21* In the past few weeks when I updated my square app, I can’t select each transaction and see what fees were charged for running the card. Instead I have a o wait until I get my evening report. This is extremely frustrating and makes bookkeeping more difficult for me. ### 4/5 — Plug and play POS. Modes for different business types. Learning curve exists for full set up. *2026-08-15* Went from a cash only set up(basic register, mom and pop type of bookkeeping). I launched a website and needed to process cards. In doing so we needed to upgrade the brick and mortar register and POS. Was able to take payments using keypad and register screen immediately. I started programming categories and items, figured out option sets etc. These all took some time to learn. I added the scanner, upon doing so deleted all items and reprogrammed all items for the retail side of things by scanning barcodes and importing the items into the system. We also serve drinks on premise, this is where the learning curve was for me. Figuring out how to use the item creating and creating variations and option sets to allow for fast drink input to different running tabs or tables. Making a mode that fit my business set up was … a task. Lots of available features. Many could be extremely valuable for efficiency and productivity but most are behind a paywall unfortunately. I’d advise against buying a bunch of premium features before learning the basics and how they can work for you and what you can improve with the premium features. Overall a total positive upgrade for our business. If you’re considering switching. Do your homework and make sure various add ons are compatible(scanners, printers etc) ### 2/5 — Lost Sales Due to Notifications *2026-08-15, version 7.20* I had a line of customers in my little shop. All wanted to use cards. As I was trying to check them out, I kept getting notifications to turn on location services. It interfered with two transactions. Both were lost cuz customer left thinking transaction was completed. Lost 100% of funds on both attempted sales. I could not recover the sales. Tried. Apparently, our only mistake was being loyal customers. After years of using Square, we expected our loyalty and transaction history to be recognised, not penalised with a higher rate than new customers. We have now moved to another provider because the pricing simply no longer makes sense for our business. Now square closes out after every single tap to pay. A nightmare during busy sales moments. Did the update hoping it would fix other bugs. This bug is the worst one. ### 1/5 — Small Business Owners - Have a Backup Plan *2026-08-12, version 7.18.1* We trusted Square to handle a major part of our small business for years. Then, without providing us with a specific reason, Square abruptly closed our account. We appealed. The appeal was denied. We asked what we did wrong. Square’s response? They “can’t share additional details.” It gets better. Square is now holding the funds our business already earned until September 9, 2026, while we scramble to replace our payment processing, booking, invoicing, website services, and other systems we had built around Square. We understand that Square can choose who they do business with. What is unacceptable is shutting down a small business’s account, refusing to tell that business specifically why, and then holding its funds for weeks. If you run a small business, please learn from our mistake: do not allow your entire operation to depend on Square. Have a backup plan. We certainly do now. Square closed our account, but they didn’t close our business.
