## What is Squirrel Story Assessment?

‘Squirrel Story Narrative Assessment’ is a narrative re-telling task for three to six year old children that yields a descriptive profile of a child’s development in six key narrative competencies. It complements the more formal assessment tools available to the speech-language therapist /pathologist or teacher. It was designed by speech and language therapist Judith Carey, in collaboration with Suze Leitão, designer of ‘Peter and the Cat Narrative Assessment’. Although the tool’s primary use is with children who have language delay and disorders, the assessment can be used for children with a variety of language needs whether the primary deficit is due to disorder, delay or language deprivation. This established assessment is used by therapists, teachers and researchers across the world and is recommended in the recent influential publication, ‘Developing language and literacy: effective intervention in the early years’, Julia M. Carroll et al, 2011. Squirrel Story is a useful tool for determining therapy goals, curriculum planning and establishing pre- and post-intervention data. The ‘Squirrel Story’ is not norm referenced, however guideline scores are presented from a sample of 100 children. The iPad version of the assessment uses the same profiling of language skills as our hard copy version but brings together an illustrated ebook with voice overs, audio recording, on screen profiling, dictation facility ( iPad 3 & 4 only), automatic report generation, distribute report by email. This enables assessments to be made quickly and efficiently with less preparation time. The final report, together with the audio recording of the child’s re-tell, can be transferred to a desktop computer via email. The report is in plain text so it can easily be incorporated into other reports or case files. The voice-overs for the story can be selected from UK, US and Australian speakers. Issues of confidentiality have been taken into account by password protecting data.

### 4/5 — I love it but I would make changes to the report

*2023-04-08, version 2.0.1*

So I have been using Squirrel Story for a few years. I am really happy with the way it helps me identify goals in spoken narrative. However more recently I have wanted to share my assessments with parents or teachers. The report looks quite messy. Is there any way to rectify it.

Firstly the ‘scores’ look quite objective, until you realise that there is no way of the reader knowing how many the score is out of. It then seems quite random unless you are comparing reports over time and hopefully you will see a progression.

Secondly, where vocabulary is reported on, there are two lots of subheadings for verbs, connectors, adverbials and adjectives. When you have filled out the report you understand why. I think for a reader it is just confusing. The vocabulary check list is useful. I don’t think the rest gives any extra information.

My last point is that however neatly you have done the transcription, starting each utterance on a different line, it all bunches up in the report. It really would look more readable (and therefore more professional) if each utterance was on a separate line.

Any chances that you could make changes???

### 3/5 — Story is great but keeps on crashing

*2017-11-07*

I can't record on this APP. I then also cannot analyse the results if recorded elsewhere. Keeps on requiring full log in which is tedious and time consuming. Please fix this so I can use it properly!

### 1/5 — It doesn’t work

*2017-10-11, version 1.4.5*

I just paid and downloaded this app and it crashes every time I try and open it. I tried to contact the app support and it goes to a page that is no longer existing. I want my money back
