This does not detract from the quality of the mag itself, this is just a reflection on the app delivery mechanism. ### 2/5 — Sailing Today *2013-06-15, version 4.9.10* I think that since the format of the magazine has changed it is not as good. ### 2/5 — Terrible interface *2013-04-07, version 4.9.4* Content is good, but they should dump the useless "Pocket Mag" engine... There is nothing good to say about it... Not so impressed with the app though? Regularly needs a reboot when the download fails.. ### 3/5 — Could be great with some changes *2011-10-19, version 3.1.2* I feel rather bad not giving this 5 stars, the developers clearly have put a lot of work in to try and produce a slick interface. Unfortunately, the result does not work how I as a user find particularly comfortable. Here are my key gripes: 1. Every page is scanned as an image. This means it took so long to download an issue it would have been quicker to walk to a newsagent and have bought a copy. 2. The wait to download is made worse by the fact you cannot start reading until the issue is downloaded in full. 3. Another result of every page being scanned as an image is that all the text looks fuzzy. 4. The contents section was completely blank. Evidently a bug. 5. It is really hard to navigate through the magazine. There is no way to see how far through the magazine you are. You can only see the present page number, but not how many pages in total there are. Also as far as I can tell, there is no way to skip to a particular page number. There also seems to be no way to jump back to the front page other than to skip back through all the pages ### 3/5 — Good content, annoying page turn effect *2011-10-16* The magazine content is good, one of the better sailing magazines. There's an annoying page turn effect in the UI which you should have the ability to suppress. Would also be great if this app supported newsstand. ### 2/5 — Great idea, but very hard to read *2011-06-05, version 3.1.2* Fantastic to have this content available but really needs some work. On IPhone 4 the text is very blocky unless you zoom in a long way. I wonder if it supports the Retina screen correctly? If this could be sorted 5 stars. ### 3/5 — Happy *2011-02-10* Updated 10/02/11 I had crashing issues to start with but very fast tech support helped until the issue was resolved. I enjoy the mag so worth the effort. I would like to be able to use subscription to download back issues easily. (a use subscription button/option when previewing back issues would be good). Also, paying for the app and the subscription seems a bit cheeky. ### 3/5 — Better than I thought... *2010-07-21, version 0* 5 star for the great magazine content, not so many for the app... I originally gave this a 1-star review because my subscription seemed to have disappeared into a black hole. They fixed the problem, so now I'm a lot happier. I don't understand why the support site is still 'coming soon' months after the app's launch and the app is still less capable and harder to navigate than the rival, but it works. The included issue is some months old. ### 2/5 — Limited *2010-07-14* Provides you with one three month old issue of the magazine. Additional copies are available at extra cost. Magazine comes as a facsimile (ie very similar to a pdf version) of the printed copy. I paid £1.79 for the app only to find all it does is allow me to download back issues of the magazine to my iphone which are too small to read. The first magazine is free and then you have to pay. The potential for a sailing app is massive, weather reportds, boat and equipment reviews, marina reports etc. etc. but this is just a pdf of the magazine. Very pleased with the purchase. ### 5/5 — Fantastic Read *2013-02-07, version 4.9.4* I've been reading Sailing Today for some time now and I'm always impressed by the range and usefulness of the articles. Keeps you up to speed with the boating world, new gear and new locations as well as helping improve your technical knowledge by many handy articles on "how to....". Stable, no memory leaks. *2011-04-05, version 3.1.2* My comments on the previous version were deleted as no longer relevant, and the good news is that this version is bug free and does not crash, although I had to buy it again when I noticed the new edition as I'd deleted it already. All the pages viewable and a thoroughly good read. Generally quite a stable programme now, although it has had it's moments in the past. ### 4/5 — Sailing Today *2011-05-28, version 3.1.2* Downloaded, subscribed for discounted 13 issues but then there appeared to be no option to download current issue of the magazine. I assumed there was an issue so reinstalled but just the same. App saying I have 13 issues of credit with the only option to be able pay for current issue at full price. It is not until you try to pay for current issue that you get asked to pay or use a credit. Why on earth isn't that on the main screen? ### 4/5 — Sailing today app *2011-05-09, version 3.1.2* Good app, works well. Bit concerned about previous reviews, but no crashes or problems at all. Would be easier to read on an iPad obviously, but the format does it's best to facilitate reading on an iPhone. Worth the cash. ### 4/5 — Good for first version, could be improved a little *2010-05-31, version 0* I bought my iPad to replace the print subscriptions that clutter my shelf, so I was pleased to see this title. I already have the Zinio app for other mags, which is very good. While the magazine reader itself is ok it slightly lacks the finesse of the Zinio app, and the scrolling sometimes does not work as anticipated. Would be nice to have a search facility, and for hyperlinks on email and web addresses, which Zinio has already. Also, when you zoom in the text is not as crisp as Zinio - it's not bad, but is noticeable when compared. The mag itself is great, and it is cheaper to subscribe to the electronic version than the printed one. ### 4/5 — Finally, a sailing mag. *2010-05-29, version 0* Okay, if you are into sailing you know this magazine, and this iPad version gives you everything in the magazine in the basic format as other iPad mags. But they've tinkered with the user interface a bit, and it works. The animation used to reopen where you were in the magazine made me laugh out loud because it was clever, and shows a hint of what we can all expect as clever designers learn to use this new medium. I'd give this 5 stars but at this point I'm just happy to see the content in the iPad format, even if it's basically still non-interactive...but that costs 1 point.
