## What is Starling Murmurations?

Watch thousands of starlings paint the sky in living, breathing patterns — directly on your iPhone or iPad. Starling Murmurations is a real-time simulation of the mesmerizing aerial displays that wild flocks perform at dusk, built on the same science that explains how real birds coordinate without a leader.

Each bird follows a handful of simple rules — alignment, cohesion, separation — and out of those rules emerges the breathtaking choreography of the murmuration. Tap to attract the flock, summon a predator to scatter them, switch atmospheres from sunset to rainstorm, or hide the UI and let the birds take over the screen.

THE SCIENCE
Inspired by Ballerini, Cavagna, Giardina et al. (2008) on topological interaction in starling flocks, and refined with the 3D StarDisplay simulation by Hildenbrandt, Carere & Hemelrijk (2010). Each bird interacts with its 7 nearest neighbors regardless of distance — producing the scale-free, almost telepathic synchronization you see in the wild.
