But I have yet to find an app like you can find on google play store. This app does not allow you to point your phone to the sky and it tells you what is where in the sky you are seeing. This app simply uses your compass to spin an already existing picture with the stars... Very disappointed with this ### 3/5 — Possible glitch *2015-06-07, version 4.5* Installed the latest update, only get half a screen when in landscape... ### 4/5 — Great App! *2014-05-18* I'll start off with the very few bad things about this app: It doesn't have nearly enough cities in the locations list (leading your Bortle light pollution number to being inaccurate). Despite it working for some, the majority and I seem to have noticed quite a bit of crashes when sifting through objects too quickly. Lastly, if the app adds more cities, it would be nice if it factored in light pollution to what you definitely can and can't see. It gets a little frustrating trying to figure those sorts of things out by trial and error when more accurate Bortle readings and a magnitude filter would solve the problem. Now that that's out of the way, there's plenty of good to talk about in this app. Starmap has excellent customization options. Not only does it give you an article-type feeling to what will be in your night sky, but you can let star map know if you're using the naked eye, binoculars, small telescope, large telescope, or a camera for stargazing, and it will very quickly adjust its headline page to what you can see with your means of vision! Additionally, if you want to know what you'll be able to see for a limited amount of time, you can adjust the time range in the "how and when" menu. Once you're done customizing your "tonight" page, simply click on the object you want to view, and follow the arrow on the star chart that Starmap provides. Starmap has excellent narration for star tracking and history. It even has a narrator that will personally explain what's in your night sky on any given day. This app needs some work, but I think it's a must-have for anyone serious about learning the cosmos. In a few more updates, it'll be clear of its few problems. ### 2/5 — Compass doesn't work on update. *2014-03-21, version 4.4* The app froze a couple of iOS updates ago. And why release a Pro version with no upgrade ability? I thought I was buying the top of the line here!!! Beautiful display though, with lots of features. The lack of a full sky view (180 degree) is disappointing and I often find myself going to the GoSkyWatch app for that. I've been a user for a few years now. A couple of things that would be of value would be the ability to share what you are looking at on Facebook or twitter which would give you good advertising. I would love it if there was some kind of reminder for interesting things in the night sky. Overall it's starting to lack behind the freebies now - which is a shame ### 5/5 — Amazing app! *2012-08-18, version 3.1* I have used starmaps (well, attempted to) for years and owned this app on my original iPhone 3G as well. On newer iPhones (as in the 4), as you hold the phone display up to the sky the starmap software moves with you labeling everything in front of you! It is wonderful an has really opened up the sky for me! The tonight sky tab really is neat and let's you see what is currently visible very easily, tap the object then with an on-screen arrow it literally leads you to where it is in the sky. Worth the money! ### 5/5 — Very beautiful, realistic, discovery and learning tool *2012-07-17* This is the most beautiful app I've ever used. You hold up your device, and it shows you what stars you are pointing at (if you point at the ground, it shows you what's on the other side of the earth). The representation of the night sky is absolutely lovely and fascinating, and very realistic. You can turn on or off drawings and illustrative overlays of the constellations, which are also simply and beautifully done. The app uses the device to detect your changed position and adjusts the sky accordingly - so you can use it to locate something familiar, and then go from there to find out what the other stars and constellations around it are. Additional features are in-depth screens with details and images, many features to turn on and off the potentially very high detail level of viewing, and even a "flashlight" feature, rather useful if you are using it outside at night to learn the real sky. The UI is smooth and very intuitive. You can just start to use it, you don't have to learn it. I have several friends with this app and the ones who don't have it often ask if I'll turn it on and show them what's in the sky at the moment. I initially quailed at the cost because so many apps are free or so much less, but it is far less cost than a book containing the same static information that you have to sit and learn by turning pages. This is a tool, not a book, and the amount of work and education and design that went into it is extraordinary. The only thing I wish it had that it doesn't is asterisms, that amateurs like me could use more easily to orient themselves outside at night. The Big and Small Dippers, for instance, are not delineated in the app. I highly recommend it. ### 5/5 — Star map *2012-05-25, version 3.0* Great, with loads of useful extras, worth the price ### 5/5 — Wonderful App *2012-05-03, version 3.0* I do believe this is the best app I have purchased. Fast and very useful with the 4S. Follows your movements well and very easy to use. Also this App is perfect and one step below a companion working professional App for an astronomer. The compass finds the sky above me and tells me what I am seeing. This is worth the price and more. The last update wiped out most of the app's features. I can't find anything. Looks like they're selling me back the features that used to be part of the app. I call foul. Why does it only show the "Big Dipper" part of Ursa Major? How many other constellations are incomplete that I'm not aware of? Why does the $0.99 app have better artwork? Use it all the time! *2013-06-26, version 3.9* Got this app after a friend recommended it and sent me an NY Times article featuring it. I have no background in astronomy at all and I've had a great time getting to know all the things that have been over my head all this time. Easy to use, fun to explore, reacts quickly as I move the phone around to look over different parts of the sky. Night vision feature is especially great. Only complaint is that I wish even more of the stars were labeled; going next for something more complete.
