### 3/5 — Ap issues

*2026-08-07, version 6.003*

Can’t seem to get access to the latest articles on the app.

### 3/5 — Helpful but not flexible enough

*2026-03-08, version 6.002*

Very helpful, but Wish you could adjust how many warm up sets you do and add an extra lift exercise when you have time to do a 4th exercise. The app has five warm up reps and I only have time for 3 so wish that could be configured in settings for each exercise type.

### 3/5 — Great app but can’t export

*2025-06-16, version 6.002*

Great app for following the program, telling you what weight to lift, and what to put on the bar. Biggest downside is that the export function doesn’t work so there’s no good way to look at or share progress.

### 3/5 — Needs Flexibility

*2025-04-30, version 6.002*

I’ve had the book for years and pulled it out again last week. I was happy to see there’s an app so I paid the $14.99 (without a trial period, of course). However, I was frustrated to see that I can’t swap out the power clean for the row, which the book explicitly says I can. I just started training again, in my garage, and am following the program, including swapping out the row in lieu of the clean. But the app doesn’t give me that option. I haven’t explored it further to see what other limitations it has, but I’ve seen other reviews that mention other particular limitations in the app that are inconsistent with the book. If this is the “official” app of the book, at least be consistent.

### 2/5 — Buggy and unreliable

*2025-03-19, version 6.002*

This is quite possibly one of the clunkiest and buggiest apps I’ve ever used. 20+ years in software and I expect this app to be way better for something that is charging money.

### 5/5 — Highly Recommend

*2025-01-12, version 2.95*

I am 73 and this program has enabled me to lift weights again after not lifting for many years. I have read the books but the app keeps me on track. I am getting stronger every week.

### 5/5 — Only Training App You Need

*2025-01-10, version 2.95*

Title says it all. I recommend all of the books and the podcast as well. I am getting stronger than I thought possible, faster than I thought possible at 38 years old.

### 5/5 — Great App

*2024-12-11, version 2.95*

Very helpful for tracking and logging workouts.

### 5/5 — Makes it easy!

*2024-12-07, version 2.95*

Everything on this app just works well. It calculates warm up set for you, and keeps a great log. All you have to supply is the motivation, lol!

### 5/5 — Get strong fast

*2024-10-28, version 2.95*

If you want to get stronger this will do it. But you need to follow directions and do not miss too many workouts. Eat right, train consistently, get enough sleep, and drink enough water and this app will work.

### 5/5 — Nice app

*2024-10-07, version 2.95*

Good app for people like me who need help with the programming. Book has so much info to help. Would like to see an watch app to move through the work sets.

### 5/5 — Official v non Official app?

*2024-09-08, version 2.95*

Seems to be 2 apps? Bought the app many years ago had to stop lifting then came back and no access to training or training log. Other official app no access to progress and I have to pay to access training or training log as a subscription, what’s up guys? Used to be a great app

### 5/5 — Excellent app for the program

*2024-03-14, version 2.2*

Fits very well in the SS program. Videos, book excerpts, pictures, are very helpful when doing the program.

You can keep a diary, but this is much simpler way of keeping track of your progress. Stable, and very few crashes, overall a solid buy!

### 4/5 — Love this app

*2023-11-11, version 2.2*

But…. I hate that it no longer syncs up with Apple Health. Please make this happen Cap’n!

### 4/5 — Awesome App, Needs Apple Health Integration

*2023-09-27, version 2.2*

Would be perfect if it would sync with Apple health for body weight measurements.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — App is completely unusable

*2026-05-29, version 6.002*

On iPhone SE Gen 3, I cannot press the save button on the intro “First Setup” screen because it is obscured by the keyboard.

### 1/5 — App no longer works

*2025-11-16, version 6.002*

The app seems to be unable to make it past the initial splash screen. Have reinstalled multiple times. Same failure point.

### 1/5 — Constantly fails to load

*2025-08-26, version 6.002*

Gets stuck on main banner screen and login screen. No easy way to reset starting weights. Waste of $15

### 1/5 — Freeze

*2025-04-18, version 6.002*

App wont load up anymore.

### 1/5 — Alert broken with update

*2025-03-31, version 6.002*

There was nothing wrong with the old alert. Someone accidentally changed it on the last update to make it a dog whistle. New alert makes the app unusable. Otherwise almost perfect app.

### 1/5 — Literally won’t open

*2023-06-14, version 2.2*

Used to love this app and would really like to use it to re-start my SS training after a hiatus. Unfortunately most of the buttons don’t work at all, and the daily training won’t open at all, it just lags out. Essentially useless.

### 1/5 — Does not even open on iphone 14 pro

*2023-04-25, version 2.2*

iOS version: 16.4.1

Please fix. I want to use this app.

### 1/5 — Not a workout tracker

*2023-04-14, version 2.2*

I purchased because it appears to be a workout tracker. It is not. It is a preset workout that it tracks. I can’t add workouts of my own and track. How do I get a refund? The “email developer” button doesn’t work.

### 1/5 — Total Garbage

*2022-05-16, version 1.14.01*

I really wanted to like this app. Unfortunately, the app cannot select the correct weight configuration, regardless of my selections(s). No, it’s not operator error. It’s just a sad glitch, which prevents me from being able to input the proper weight, based on my selections. Fix that, and I’d give it 5 stars.

### 1/5 — What?

*2021-05-16, version 1.13.02*

I’ve been using the app no problem. Today it began asking me questions about my preferences and things like my date of birth and body weight. But when I filled out that info I couldn’t go on because the keyboard wouldn’t disappear.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Ap

*2026-05-11, version 6.002*

No issues. Took a while to learn what was what but now it’s all good

### 5/5 — Keeps me on track

*2026-02-17, version 6.002*

Keeps me on track and motivated Takes the guess work out of warm up sets. Rip is the science.

### 5/5 — Use it!

*2025-11-08, version 6.002*

Great app for those looking to run the NLP.

### 5/5 — The best weight lifting app

*2025-07-31, version 6.002*

Nothing compares to Starting Strength. The best strength training app I’ve ever used and the only program out there for anyone from high school athletes to Great Grand Parents. Thank you for this program and app

### 5/5 — Best strength training apparel!!

*2025-07-20, version 6.002*

This has been the best tool that I have for building mass and muscle, if your looking for a great app that will virtually take the guessing out of where/how to begin training and also what workouts to do then this app is it!!

### 5/5 — Read the book. But this is great!

*2025-06-24, version 6.002*

The book is much more digestible, but this is an AWESOME companion for when you’re training. Mark really made me see what I was doing in the past was NOT GOOD. I tried to mimic what I saw on YouTube with little knowledge. This guy has helped me get low and without pain. His years of experience really shine through his text, and this app helps the LOG stay consistent. Also great cues in here for reference when you’re thinking “how do I set up for the shoulder press?”

### 5/5 — Fantastic

*2025-06-02, version 6.002*

This app is just what I needed in every respect. Goes deep into technique then simple design and easy to log workouts.

### 5/5 — Continuously Getting Stonger

*2025-05-30, version 6.002*

It is working for me. Age 67

### 5/5 — Perfect for me

*2025-04-30, version 6.002*

Simple. Strict. Easy to modify weights, time, exercises. Exactly what I wanted - something without all the bells whistles. Thanks!!!

### 5/5 — Great App, could improve

*2025-01-31, version 2.95*

I found this app very useful for the novice progression. It is easy to use, to the point. It lets you have your data, and has good privacy policies. I didn’t encounter a lot of bugs. Five stars. But there is room for improvement.

For one, it would be great for the app to accommodate variations that the books actually recommend for some, particularly older lifters me) and women. From Rippentoe’s remarks older trainees seem to be a core demographic for them, so this deficit is surprising. Sets of three (for women), dropping power cleans for older lifters, lat pull downs, etc. these are all found in the Novice programing so it seems a novice program app should have them.

The other improvement is to accommodate intermediate programing elements: 5x5s, backoff sets, rep progression, auxiliary and assistance exercises. This is more complex, but it would be a welcome upgrade.
