### 1/5 — Terrible app

*2020-09-17*

I did as I was supposed to downloaded this app installed the device in my car it worked for two weeks now the app when I open it up asks if I’m a new user a returning user when I put in my email address it says there is no account with that email address and it does not work. I am not going through the hassle of resetting all of this up. I’m taking the device out of my car and deleting the app. What a ridiculous waste of time

**Developer response:** I'm sorry you had this experience with the app. Our Customer Support Team is here to assist with access issues to get you back into the app. Please email us at Telematics@StateAuto.com or call us at 833.724.3577.

### 1/5 — Do NOT download this app!

*2020-06-22, version 1.2.0*

This app is highly invasive. It is constantly tracking my location even when I have my phone off. The app also assumes that I am driving at all times even when I’m not the one driving the car.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD this app!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Ambiguous grading & creepy tracking

*2023-06-24*

The grading makes no sense and the constant location monitoring when not connected to the Bluetooth device is unnecessary and creepy.

How is a 79th percentile in the bottom 40%?
How does an average 4.3 out of 5 star rating equal 79%?
Why does a trip to the closest store automatically earn a 2 star smoothness score?
Why is there no guidance on which roads are considered more favorable than others so that I could adjust accordingly in my local area?
Why is there no transparency as to how the tracking affects my premium?

### 1/5 — Just don’t get it

*2022-08-10*

If I could give this zero stars I would. How do I have 5 stars on all drives and yet I have a drive score of 64 and am in the bottom 10% of all drivers?

### 1/5 — Battery killer

*2022-07-23*

drains my phones battery like crazy. Can’t keep my phone charged when app is constantly checking my location

### 1/5 — No event but just one star for the trip score

*2022-05-22*

I notice there was no event in a trip, but i got one star for that trip.
It seems this is the way they scam you into paying higher insurance rate. No worry, I will just change insurance afterwards lol

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback and I’m sorry to hear the app has been giving you trouble. We work hard to make sure this system helps you monitor and improve your driving. Would you please email us at Telematics@StateAuto.com or call us at 833.724.3577 with a few examples of trips that are in question? Perhaps it’s a known issue we’ve already corrected, or something others are experiencing as well that we need to fix. Thank you again for giving us a shot - we hope you stick around and see your scores improve!

### 1/5 — Take my first review back

*2022-05-04*

I take back my original two star rating for this program and give it an official half a star rating and here are the reasons why:

The system only determines that you are a safe driver based off of breaking and accelerating, and phone usage, time of day driving, also if you follow the speed limits; that the program has set and not what the actual speed limits are on the streets. If this was used off of Google maps or Apple Maps or some other type of system to get the accurate speed limits then it may be a little better.
The sensor does not read if you come to a complete stop at stop signs or if you are running red lights etc. Or if for some reason your child is using your phone during the drive then it goes negatively against the drive.
Another thing that it doesn’t do is keep track of cars that are around you like let’s say; during traffic hour when people are constantly just slamming on their brakes for no reason or that you are driving with the flow of traffic. Or if you actually use your turning signals, all of those things determine if you were driving safe or not.
The worst part of it is that you don’t even see any discounts until you’re driving with the sensor for a whole year, it would make more sense if they did quarterly discounts or something like that where you got to see some of the benefits sooner versus waiting a whole year. In order to finally get to see the outcome.
Also one huge issue that I have with this is, what I do for a living requires me to constantly have phone calls and navigation while I’m driving, and even though I have Bluetooth that goes over my car so that way I do not have my phone in hand the system still reads that I am on the phone and it negatively effects my stars.
All in all it is a good idea and concept however it is very very very janky at best.

**Developer response:** If you feel the speed limits in an area do not match up with our app, please let us know! We work hard to keep our maps accurate but we can use your help in detecting changes and errors. Please submit your trip and a detail of the information to Telematics@StateAuto.com so we can correct it.

### 1/5 — Unnecessary solution to a non-existent problem

*2022-03-19*

I would just like to state first I may be a bit biased because as a computer scientist I don’t like apps tracking me on my phone, especially apps designed to track me at all times. The only reason I got this is because I’m young and auto-insurance is unaffordable without the discount.

Personally I don’t see why this app even needs to exist. It feels like an unnecessary intrusion into my life given the type of tracking relevant to auto insurers can be obtained via a small device in a vehicle’s OBD2 port. Aside from the privacy issues this app also is constantly draining the battery from my phone since location services are always on.

The app itself is unresponsive at times and doesn’t even correctly track half of my trips. It does a worse job than older tracking methods like the OBD2 method and it kills my phone at the same time.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. The purpose of the app is making roads safer for everyone - not to track your every move. Our intention is to reward safe drivers, and incentivize people to drive safer. The app requires your Location Permission to be set to "Always Allow" so that it can run in the background and record the start and stop of your trips. This means that you don't have to log in or foreground the app when you're ready to drive.

The app uses mobile data to upload your trips. If you wish to limit your mobile data usage, and potential battery drain, you have the option to only share data when connected to Wi-Fi in the app settings.

I'm sorry to hear that the app is missing trips. Please email us at Telematics@StateAuto.com or call us at 833.724.3577, so we can research and provide options to address what you are experiencing. Thank you again for giving us a shot - we hope you continue to use the app and see your scores improve!

### 1/5 — Used up all my data

*2022-02-06*

This app FORCES users to keep location services “always on” which I’m pretty sure is against Appstore TOS. Also in a few hours I had it on it used all my data in the background.

### 1/5 — Inaccurate

*2021-08-12*

Today is our first day using the app. I can say I’ve never had this much trouble with an insurance company before, ever. Our app states my boyfriend drove 36 in downtown Grand Rapids, where the speed limit is 25. I am actually offended by this. 36, through downtown? How would he have managed that? It even says he went 36 when he turned. How does that work? I think the app is a scam so the insurance company can say you are an irresponsible driver and hike your rate up later on.

**Developer response:** We don't want to penalize you for instances where you're meeting the speed of others
on the road, even if that's above the speed limit. If you believe you've
been incorrectly scored, feel free to email us at Telematics@StateAuto.com or call us at 833.724.3577.

### 1/5 — Not sure this I worth the effort for a savings

*2021-06-17, version 1.3.1*

I usually don’t rite review for app but felt the need to say something about this one.

The thought of saving more on my premium was a no brainer, however, I don’t think this app is worth the effort. Im sure everyone thinks they are good driver until eagle eyes says differently. Well, I’ve had a very good driving record and am intentional on the road. This seem to think otherwise.

A few things I’ve noticed:

1. The user interface is not clean or helpful. Compared to other apps I’ve seen from other companies, this need help. Invest the money to cleaning this up.
2. The initial process kept sending me reminders to activate a week after I activated. The startup instructions should also indicate you need to create a separate username for each driver.
3. It is missing trips. Not every trip is logged.
4. Driving a short distance (under 3 miles) rates you poorly. I don’t care if most accidents happen closer to home, use the same standard on me no matter the distance.
5. There are no explanations of the criteria that is supposed to help you change your habits. Smoothness refers to what exactly? Roads are what?
6. I cannot help the time of day I drive because I work outside the home. Find a better way to evaluate that or adjust its criticism.
7. Don’t just give me a score but help me understand how much of a savings I or anyone in my family is creating.

That’s what I have for now. I’m not sure we are going to keep this on our policy. We will keep an eye on it for a couple of months and if no changes, then we more than likely will remove.

### 1/5 — Very Confused

*2021-04-21*

This app is very confusing and not very helpful. It fired you a rating but no explanation for the rating or what statistics are being used to determine the score. It’s been in my car for a month now and the highest score I’ve gotten is 60 even though most of my ratings are 4s and 5s. No matter worst you click on there is no information or explanation provided. I hate this app and it truly is a waste of time.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. We understand your frustration and will take your feedback in to account with upcoming app updates to improve the in-app scoring experience. We hope you will continue to use the app and earn your discount.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Decent app

*2023-12-14*

Gives me the information I need

### 5/5 — Already worth $250 annually?

*2023-02-02*

By giving me benchmarks and suggestions my annual premium is down about $250.

### 5/5 — Good app

*2022-11-12*

The Safety360 Mobile works well to benefit good driving. I appreciate the prompt trip feedback, the good maps, and very complete mapping of speed limits.
I will offer a few suggestions to make the app even better. Have the Safety360 Mobile device beep when the vehicle is going more than 8 mph over the speed limit, or doing a hard breaking or cell phone is used while driving.

### 4/5 — Mrs

*2023-03-11*

I like seeing how well I’ve done but, I don’t drive often. The outcome is that you text me all the time telling me to take my phone with me when I drive. I do!

### 4/5 — Linda Novak

*2023-01-01*

App is pretty good. One flaw is app doesn’t recognize when school kids are on Christmas break so slower speed limit doesn’t apply. If school flashing light sign isn’t on, app should allow regular speed limit. Also, when we go into local city & make several stops in a short distance (e.g., P.O., drug store, gas station, butcher shop), app registers lack of smooth driving

### 4/5 — My rating is sometimes confusing

*2022-12-13*

Sometimes it gets my phone number confused and tells my husband’s phone number the rating. And vice versa. When I get 5 stars on a trip, sometimes my rating may go down and I don’t know why. Would like to know what I did wrong.

### 3/5 — Short trips always rated low

*2021-04-12*

For some reason, anytime I have a short trip somewhere (less than a mile), it rates my driving pretty low (two or three stars). Any trip that’s longer I get four or five stars. But I’m driving the same way no matter where I go. A bit frustrating

**Developer response:** If you feel your trips are not being scored correctly, please let us know! Please submit your trip and a detail of the information to Telematics@StateAuto.com or call us at 833.724.3577 so we can investigate it.

### 2/5 — Does not record trips

*2022-01-07*

This is not reliable in the least! Records half the trips, tells me I’m speeding or hard breaking… when I’m not. Definitely not worth it if it is not gonna to accurately work like I was told it would!

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback and I’m sorry to hear the app has been giving you trouble. We
work hard to make sure this system helps you monitor and improve your driving. Would you please email us at Telematics@StateAuto.com or call us at 833.724.3577 with a few examples of trips that didn’t record correctly?

### 2/5 — Terrible experience

*2021-02-03*

After a challenging start getting the tracker and app synced, shortly afterward they stopped working. The customer service for Safety 360 did not respond to four emails sent over several months. Thankfully we’ve moved on from State Auto so can delete this intrusive mess of an app and be done with it.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. I’m sorry to hear the app gave you trouble and that you are no longer a customer of State Auto. Our team is here to help troubleshoot issues you are having. If you've emailed us at Telematics@StateAuto.com, and did not receive a response, you can call us at 833.724.3577 for support. We hope you will give us another opportunity in the future.

### 2/5 — Very inaccurate, highly frustrating

*2020-10-13*

After a very frustrating couple of weeks trying to get this set up for me and the other drivers in my family, it unexplainably stopped working and I had to call in and start the whole process again. Finally got everything set up again and seems to be working now (hopefully), but it is often very inaccurate in how fast it measures my speed, sometimes saying I’m going 25 mph or more faster on the freeway than I actually am! It’s just crazy! And while the app gives you feedback and a “drivability” score, there is no indication of how this relates to your insurance rates. The idea is that if you have a good score, your rates will go down, and if you have a poor score, you may get a surcharge on your insurance rates. But there is no way to know how good your score has to be to make your rates go up or down. Is a score of 84 good? It seems like it, but maybe 86 or 93 is where you need to be to avoid a surcharge. Not a lot of transparency. It’s all a big mystery.

**Developer response:** I’m sorry to hear about your disappointment with the app and understanding your discount. If you believe you've been incorrectly scored based on your speed, feel free to reach out at Telematics@StateAuto.com or call us at 833.724.3577 to research your speeding concern. In addition, to give you an understanding of how our discounting works in relation to your score, please visit https://www.stateauto.com/safety360. Here you will find a driver score and discount chart to help you better understand your potential discount in relation to the score you see in the app. We hope you will continue to use the app!
