## What is Stellar Tour?

Stellar Tour is the only AR stargazing app written by an astrophysicist. Point your phone at the night sky and get a guided tour of everything up there: 1.7 billion real stars, every planet and major moon, eclipses, meteor showers, 13,000 deep-sky objects, and a course in astronomy that starts with the sky over your head and ends at the edge of the universe.

Astrophysicist Dr. Aaron Day wrote every word. Instead of the standard flood of random facts, Stellar Tour tells the scientifically accurate story of each world: what it is like on the ground, in the seas, or floating through the clouds.

THE NIGHT SKY, FOR REAL
• 1.7 billion stars from ESA's Gaia survey, each in its true position. Pinch to zoom from your backyard to the galactic core.
• The Milky Way as it actually looks, drawn from every star Gaia measured, with constellations, planets, and satellites overlaid on your live sky.
• A sky that looks like the time it is: dawn, daylight, twilight, and full dark, with a real atmosphere and hazy ridges on the horizon. The Moon shows its earthshine, and Earth's night side its city lights.
• Night Vision mode keeps your eyes dark-adapted with a pure red display.

LEARN THE SKY
• Fifteen short lessons, from the sky over your head to the edge of the universe. Every stop is a live visit: the lesson flies you to the star, steps the clock, or opens the tool it is talking about. The first three lessons are free.
• Three reference books inside the app, How We Know, The Sky, and The Whole Story, with a glossary and dozens of labeled diagrams.

SEVEN SKIES
• See the stars the way Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, India, and the Arabian desert saw them: their star figures and folk names drawn on your sky, their stories on each star's page, and their lunar festivals on the calendar.

PLAN YOUR NIGHT
• Sky Calendar: every eclipse, meteor shower, conjunction, and full moon, filtered by type. The week ahead is free; the full year comes with the expansion.
• Night Planner: the best targets for your sky tonight, hour by hour. Sky Forecast: the cloud cover over your spot, hour by hour.
• Reminders that fire only when something is worth stepping outside for, including ISS and Tiangong passes with a live countdown.
• Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets for rise and set times and the next sky event. Ask Siri what is visible tonight.

ECLIPSE EXPLORER
Simulate any solar or lunar eclipse from any place on Earth: local timings, a disc animation of the Moon crossing the Sun, and a live countdown. The next solar eclipse at your own location is free: its times, what you will see there, and a reminder.

GO DEEPER
• Telescope Catalog: 13,000 NGC, IC, and Messier objects, searchable and shown on your sky.
• Exoplanets: nearly every known world, in its actual position on the sky, with sizes, temperatures, and orbits.
• The Solar System up close: planets and major moons in NASA probe imagery, in visible light, ultraviolet, infrared, and radar. Rotate them to any angle.
• Hubble and James Webb Space Telescope pictures, on the pages of the objects they show.

FOR EVERYONE
• Kid Mode rewrites the whole tour for explorers aged five to seven.
• Birthday Sky: a shareable card of the sky on the night you were born.
• Smart search: ask for exactly what you want.
• Fifteen languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Vietnamese, and Icelandic. Dates in your own calendar.
• VoiceOver and Dynamic Type throughout.

ONE PURCHASE, NO SUBSCRIPTION
Cosmic Expansion adds the planner, the catalog, the eclipses, the exoplanets, the galaxies, the full year of the calendar, and the whole course in a single purchase that is yours forever.

### 5/5 — WOW!!

*2025-12-18, version 5.5.0*

This is the greatest app! I love being able to even see the moon below the horizon so I know where it will rise! Since I live so near a large city, it’s not always easy to see all the stars. So it’s great that the app helps me identify the constellations even when I’m not able to see all the stars involved! It’s almost like a video game! :)

### 5/5 — Best star app

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 8.1 — 2026-09-22

Stellar Tour 8.1 makes two of the app's best things free, and lets the sky match yours.

• Birthday Sky is free: the sky on the night you were born, the starlight from your birth year, and a card to share.
• Your next solar eclipse is free: its times at your own location, what you will see there, and a reminder. An eclipse alert now lands you on it, not on a paywall.
• Star Brightness is a rail on the Sky View, with four stops: City, Suburb, Dark site, Photograph. Drag it until the screen looks like the sky over your head.
• By day, one tap on "See tonight" shows tonight's dark sky; "Back to now" returns.
• More faint stars, a soft glow on the brightest, and a horizon haze that the Milky Way sinks into with its stars.
• Set a location by typing its coordinates.
• Fixes throughout the object sheets, the calendar family, the planner, Kid Mode and VoiceOver.

### 8.0 — 2026-09-09

Stellar Tour 8.0 is the biggest update the app has ever had.

• Learn the sky: a course in astronomy in fifteen short lessons, from the sky over your head to the edge of the universe. Every stop is a live visit in the sky. The first three lessons are free.
• Fifteen languages: French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, and Vietnamese join English, Spanish, and Icelandic, with every page, picture, and diagram translated.
• Seven skies: the star figures, folk names, stories, and festivals of Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, India, and the Arabian desert, drawn on your sky beside the Western constellations.
• A new look: a sky that follows the time of day, a real atmosphere, hazy ridges on the horizon, the Milky Way drawn from every Gaia star, earthshine on the new Moon, city lights on Earth's night side, and stars that blaze like suns when you fly to them.
• Hubble and James Webb Space Telescope pictures on the object pages, and photographs that fill the screen.
• Three reference books, How We Know, The Sky, and The Whole Story, with a glossary and new diagrams.
• The Tonight widget finds its own night wherever you are, and the app uses far less memory at launch.
• And a great many fixes across the object sheets, the calendar family, Kid Mode, Night Vision, the iPad, and VoiceOver.

### 7.2 — 2026-08-08

The total solar eclipse is August 12. Eclipse Explorer gives you the exact times for wherever you are standing, and that eclipse's page is free for everyone through the 12th.

This update fixes the eclipse screen's location heading, which appeared in English for readers in other languages and sometimes forgot the place name entirely. It also corrects a few facts in the object descriptions, including how long Io takes to orbit Jupiter.

### 7.1 — 2026-08-04

The August 12 total eclipse is two weeks out, and this update is about being ready for it.
• Sky Forecast: hourly cloud cover and conditions for your exact spot, plus the week ahead
• Sky reminders now read the forecast, so a clouded-out peak night says so
• During eclipse week the whole Eclipse Explorer is free for everyone
• Tap a meteor shower's radiant right in the sky to learn about the shower
• Night vision: every control, scroll bar and title now holds deep red
• Night Planner: a plan for another place speaks that place's times, every row
Plus smarter sky event announcements and dozens of small fixes.

### 7.0 — 2026-07-24

The August 12 total eclipse is coming, and this update is built for it.
• Eclipse Explorer: any eclipse, simulated from your exact spot, with local timings and a live countdown
• Night Planner: the best targets for your sky tonight, hour by hour
• Telescope Catalog: 13,000 deep-sky objects, searchable
• Birthday Sky: the sky of the night you were born, as a card worth sharing
• Sky Calendar: the week ahead free, the full year with the expansion
Plus a moonless Perseid peak the same night, smarter notifications, and many fixes.
